RR -- Jane's Favorite Things

  • Oct. 20th, 2008 at 9:12 AM

It's my birthday!  (Well, it was last Wednesday, at any rate.)  I've decided to celebrate by asking ya'll to rec some of my favorite things.  Here's a list:P

Harlequin, Marriage of Convenience, Amnesia, and/or Bonding fic: I recently read a Harlequin book for the first time in years, and I was surprised by the fact that I, well, hated it.  Yet I still love fanfic Harlequin.  I think the difference is that most romance novels (even these days) feature a nominally independent woman who is really desperate and lonely and can't seem to cope with life without a man.  (Look, there's one!  Grab him before he gets away!)  Fanfic Harlequin, on the other hand, usually features two (often male;) characters who are both getting something out of the situation and who have equal, if different, strengths and weaknesses.  Yum.

Small Fandoms: I love a whole slew of small fandoms and I'm always looking for more.  I'll be doubly grateful for Tin Man (Cain/Glitch) and 3:10 to Yuma (Ben/Dan) fic.  Yuma has been especially difficult for me, as every comm and personal LJ devoted to the show seems to be graphics and/or ad heavy, and they tend to crash my browser, so specific links to every single part would be very much appreciated.

New fic and/or fic only found at author's websites: I have most of the archives covered, but these days not everyone (or even the majority) post their fics at said archives, so I'm looking for any stories I might have missed in any of the fandoms I rec in, either because they're really new, they're on small and/or multi-fandom archives, or they're on the author's website.  Note that I pretty much never read multi-chapter stories on LJ (unless the story has been broken up strictly for length, rather than because the author likes post her stories as she writes), and single-file links are always preferable to the same story broken in chapters.

Thanks in advance for being such fabulous folks!

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

As an absolute devotee of slash, I'm flabbergasted to actually find myself reccing a het story. But it's so well-written that it actually got ME to read it, and it's a marriage of convenience, so hopefully you might enjoy it.

Pride and Prejudice: Overthrowing Such Schemes, by Ali
http://meryton.com/ellenspdf/Overthrowing%20Such%20Schemes.pdf

Let me know if the link doesn't work for you - it's the only working link I've found, but I saved the PDF and can pass it along.

Also, have you seen this rec page of arranged/forced marriages? It has some goodies, and is actually how I came across Ali's story:

I'm glad you've found my recs page useful! OSS isn't actually on that page (it's on the main P&P recs page) but it's a good story.

[livejournal.com profile] jane_elliot - I can't think of anything off-hand in those categories that I haven't already recced to you... in any case some of the things you asked for are not my type of fic at all. Sorry!

Have you ever considered asking for originalfic recs? Or does anyone know if there's a community out there which specialises in reccing it (not m/m specific)? I know there's good original fiction out there (I have a few bookmarked myself) but it's nowhere near as easy to find as fanfiction, sadly.

Since I found myself back here again, I thought I'd mention a couple more HP recs, in case you haven't come across them.

The first forced marriage I ever read was Enahma's My Man Friday (Severus/Harry). Definitely angsty before the happy ending. It's offline, but if one of your readers doesn't have a copy, you can probably get someone to send you one here: http://community.livejournal.com/snarryficfind/tag/author:+enahma

For your request #3, fic only on the author's website, I think alchemia and bugland's intertexius series is only on their site:
http://www.intertexius.net/
If you haven't already read it, be warned - this one is darker than what I'd normally rec. But just absolutely amazingly worth it for the quality of the writing.

Whee! Thanks for the recs:)

(BTW, when you say dark -- do you mean explicit non-con or a heavy focus on hurt but not comfort? I'm a wuss, but if I know that the happy, comforting stuff outweighs the dark, painful stuff, I can stand quite a bit of the latter. Thanks!)

small fandoms!
Tin Man! (I'm still waiting for really good Zero fic.) The best Cain/Glitch I've read is [livejournal.com profile] dragons_muse's The Salve of the Wounded Saint (http://community.livejournal.com/glitch_wyatt/13357.html). Glitch/Cain, Jeb/Azkadellia. A lovely depiction of the long slow road to healing, post-series.

Sorry, I'm not in 3:10 fandom. The only comm I know of, [livejournal.com profile] threetentrain, doesn't seem any more or less graphics heavy than most LJs.

Battlestar Galactica:
[livejournal.com profile] alissabobissa brings out a sweetly humorous side to Leoben's fixation on Kara in A Two Is a Two Is a Two (http://alissabobissa.livejournal.com/58893.html).

Bourne series:
[livejournal.com profile] seperis's The World of Women (http://seperis.livejournal.com/610391.html)--an outstanding portrait of Marie wanting to be an asset to Jason, not a liability.

Chuck:
[livejournal.com profile] green_postit tells the painful story of Chuck's relationships with both Bryce and Jill in college, and the emotional toll it takes on Bryce, in every home was like alcatraz (http://green-postit.livejournal.com/29445.html).
[livejournal.com profile] fiareynne writes scads of awesome Chuck/Casey. Bedbugs (http://fiareynne.livejournal.com/492435.html) is a classic, with sequel ficlets (http://fiareynne.livejournal.com/tag/bedbugs).

DC Comics:
[livejournal.com profile] oneangrykate and [livejournal.com profile] jubilancy's Drake for America (http://oneangrykate.livejournal.com/550134.html)--Tim is a rather outspoken President, and Kon-el is one sexy First Gentleman. ♥ ♥ ♥

Good Omens:
[livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth's An Excellent Long-Term Solution (http://community.livejournal.com/go_exchange/17741.html) features Crowley and Aziraphale with the old "pretending to be lovers" trope.

Hard Core Logo:
[livejournal.com profile] sageness's The Secret Life of Joe Dick (or, The Big Con) (http://community.livejournal.com/midsummer2007/5134.html) is a masterful reworking of every assumption the viewer makes about what's going on in the movie.
[livejournal.com profile] troyswann's Tenth Day Creation (http://troyswann.livejournal.com/545871.html) gives Billy a Robert Johnson kind of spin.

Hot Fuzz:
Three authors who really, really get the voices and the sweetness of Nick and Danny just right:
[livejournal.com profile] annlarimer's Changing Rooms (http://annlarimer.livejournal.com/783224.html)
[livejournal.com profile] azarias's Film Studies (http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/archive/45/filmstudies.html)
[livejournal.com profile] joandarck's Missing Out (http://joandarck.livejournal.com/185214.html)

Live Free or Die Hard:
Kate Andrew's The Walking Wounded (http://svilleficrecs.livejournal.com/568785.html) follows Matt's obsession with John's pain and John's scars and, well, John.

Torchwood:
I just spent all day Sunday reading [livejournal.com profile] dsudis's Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive (http://dsudis.livejournal.com/455498.html)instead of doing my laundry. SO WORTH IT! A touch of mpreg (but not squickily so), not-confusing time travel, and a lovely Jack/Ianto love story that hops centuries while staying true to character.

I have so many recs for Slings & Arrows. Have you seen it? If not, you must, if you like at all: funny, smart television; theatre; Shakespeare; Paul Gross; drama, comedy, and did I mention smart tv?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Re: small fandoms!
EEE! Tin Man! Thanks! (BTW, I'll be having Tin Man recs coming, probably next year -- after the other twenty or so recs I have saved up:)

I've tried to look through threetentrain, but haven't had much success with finding fic. There is a Dan/Ben comm called bridalsuite -- that's the one that's most promising, and also the one that keeps crashing my browser. Though it might not be the graphics, but rather the ads. Ad-supported comms suck up a ridiculous amount of CPU.

And scads of small fandoms that I'm already reading and looking for recs for! Chuck, Good Omens, DH4, SQUEEEEEEE! Thank you!

(BTW, I have watched Slings and Arrows and enjoyed some of it. The problem is that I don't actually like Shakespeare. *ducks* But I do love Paul Gross, so I watched at least the first two seasons of the show. Were there more?)

Here's an HP I don't think you've recced--harlequinesque, but smart and lovely: Amy's And Then There Were Three (http://www.pornbunnyfarm.com/pages/andthentherewerethree.html). Snape initiates an official courting ritual, and everyone is surprised that both Draco and Harry consider his offer seriously. A touch of mpreg at the end.

Amnesia fic--yum!

It doesn't get more fun than Speranza's Chicago's Most Wanted (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/CMWanted.html)--a delightful Due South romp, in which Fraser wakes up without his memory and believes he's a criminal. And becomes the most terrifyingly efficient criminal in Chicago. Hee! Fraser/RayK.

[livejournal.com profile] maisierita's Forget Me Not (http://maisierita.livejournal.com/14509.html) is a fabulous, epic Stargate: Atlantis amnesia!fic, prison!fic and slave!fic rolled into one. Rodney can't remember anything other than that he is a Class Five prisoner. Class Two John is assigned to him as a servant.

Smallville (Clex): [livejournal.com profile] justabi's Stocks and Bonds of Holy Matrimony (http://smallville.slashdom.net/archive/41/stocksand.html), Henry Jones Jr's With This Ring (http://www.sabershadowkat.com/smallville/withthisring.html), [livejournal.com profile] kantayra's Still Two Fools (http://community.livejournal.com/kantayra_fic/tag/multi-parters:+two+fools).

Supernatural (Wincest): [livejournal.com profile] lyra_wing's Exact Change (http://lyra-wing.livejournal.com/117308.html) Sam and Dean have to get married--to infiltrate a cult.

Awesome Stargate: Atlantis Harlequin AUs:
Kellifer's The Blade (http://community.livejournal.com/harlequin_sga/22760) John has been trained as a slave, and sold to serve as Blade the son of the Patriarch of the house McKay.
[livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore's 101 Ways to Get Lucky (In Love) (http://community.livejournal.com/undermistletoe/51353.html) Rodney is a successful CEO, who needs a relationship consultant to find him a wife.
Randomeliza's Playing With Matches (http://elizayabanci.livejournal.com/1066.html) Rodney's family history says he'll go insane if he's not married by 35, so Jeannie insists he go to a matchmaker.

From spn_harlequin (all J2 AUs):
[livejournal.com profile] causeways' Mr. Right Next Door (http://causeways.livejournal.com/68273.html). Jared meets the girl of his dreams on a cruise. He has no idea that she's a drug kingpin, nor that his brand new neighbor is a DEA agent poised to take her down.
[livejournal.com profile] keepaofthecheez's When the Dealin’s Done (http://keepaofthecheez.livejournal.com/422812.html). Jared's on his way to winning another World Series of Poker, when the man who taught him to play before breaking his heart shows up.
[livejournal.com profile] phaballa's Manny and the Beast (http://phaballa.livejournal.com/320785.html). Jensen's a wealthy porn shop magnate. Jared is fine with being the nanny for his children--until Jensen thinks they should get married.
[livejournal.com profile] raina_at's The Billionaire's Bidding (http://raina-at.livejournal.com/283248.html). Jensen's rich, Jared needs money, and Jensen needs for his dad to think he has a boyfriend.

Resonant is a wonderful writer and this is a great story. Bender drops out of high school, as you would expect, but then goes on to be successful on his own terms. A few years later Brian shows up in his life again. Very nice voice to the story.

It might not be to your taste but I thought I'd point it out:-)
