Summary:
It is the year-that-wasn't, and Martha needs to spread the Doctor's message, but in order to do that she needs to stay alive - something Derek Reese is very good at.

Review:
A brilliant blending of the two Universes. Both Martha and Derek are in character throughout the story and the events are believable within both story-lines.

I always love well written stories of Martha's journey during the year-that-wasn't and this is one of the best I've found.

Keeper of Souls by Hunters Retreat (NC-17)

  • May. 19th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Title: Keeper of Souls
Fandom: Dark Angel/Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Pairing: Alec/Derek
Categories: action, sci-fi
Length: long (17.500 words)
Warnings: violence, cyborgs

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hunters_retreat
Author Website: n/a

Summary: Everyone learned to keep secrets and Alec was better at it than most. He needed to be after all, he had more to hide. When a raid goes wrong though and he's forced to work with a human named Derek Reese, he begins to trust. Derek seems on the up and up and so they make their way through the resistance, fighting for humanity and trying to keep each other alive. But what happens when Derek finds out that Alec isn't part of humanity, but a Transgenic from Cyberdyne’s Manticore facility? What will happen when humanity's last hope for survival rests on a man that isn't human at all?

Review:
The only thing I knew about the Terminator universe was Arnold Schwarzeneger's "I'll be back" but I knew and liked Dark Angel. I thought why not give it a try. The bonus of the Apocalypse setting lured me further into actually reading the story.

Keeper of Souls makes you think that both universes DA and Terminator are actually one universe. The settings are perfectly woven together. I enjoyed this bleak but still hopeful apocalyptic fic and revisit it from time to time.

Title: Second of Our Reign
Fandom: Generation Kill
Pairing: Brad/Nate, Secondary Walt/Ray
Categories: AU, Fusion, Time-Travel
Length: Epic (40,736 words)
Warnings: None

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cala_jane / Author Website: Fic @ AO3
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] noelia_g / Author Website: stop.look.listen

Summary:
Brad Colbert and his team are sent back in time with a simple mission: localise and destroy a crucial piece of technology that could change the fate of the war between humans and machines. Finding himself at Dartmouth in 1998, he should have expected things to turn out far from simple. But running into his future commanding officer and risking creating a time paradox? That’s just the beginning.

Review:
I loved this fic, from the premise all the way through the execution. It has time travel and is a fantastic homage to Terminator while still being so very Generation Kill. I liked the delicious tension with Brad and/or Nate pining for the other throughout their intertwined history. It’s a given, from the summary, that Brad runs into a younger version of Nate and I really liked how Brad put the entire story together in his head and realized Nate kept some very important information from him. The flashbacks were well placed and moved the story forward.

The characterization of a younger Nate, who shows shades of the CO he’s going to be, in contrast to Nate in Iraq and Nate during the war with the machines is terrific. He’s still Nate, innate characteristics coming through, but there are little differences in him and in his interactions with Brad that are a delight.

The humor throughout the whole story is spot on and the ending does not disappoint.

Uh. The world is ending, or something, and it's up to everyone to save it. Also, Alec Hardison has the worst luck *ever*.

I'll be honest: your enjoyment of this story is almost entirely dependent on how many of the shows you watch -- I'm a fan of six of them and never heard of the seventh, which meant I enjoyed it a lot but there were a couple of sections I probably could have skipped. That said, this fic is a huge blast, from Dean (of Supernatural) and Sam (of Burn Notice) getting locked together in a trunk (and getting drunk, natch), to Sam (of Supernatural) going shopping with Damon (of The Vampire Diaries) at Walmart T-Mart (resulting in fatalities, natch), to Alec (of Leverage) getting abducted by... well, everyone (till he gets resuced by Eliot, natch). Also: Damon vs. Castiel! Best of all? Every morally grey bad guy ever getting sloshed on tequila together while Neal tries to explain to Peter (both of White Collar) why Peter has to let them all into an FBI building for a 'ritual'.

If you're a fan of whacked-out crossovers and/or really, really enjoy seeing characters from multiple shows running into each other, this is a really fun (if nonsensical) ride.
