Title: The Lucifer Match by Gwyneth Rhys
Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Chris/Vin
Categories: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Post-Canon, Romance
Length: Epic (50,000+)
Warnings: While I wouldn’t necessarily categorize this as a darkfic, it does contain a lot of dark themes, situations, dubious consent, and character death so please be aware before reading.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r
Website: Chez Gwyn

Author’s Summary: A novel that's mostly about fire, in many forms: the aftermath of loss, its purging nature, the destructive force of a wildfire, the fever of obsession, and the flame of love.

Review:
I have to admit that the first time I read this story, I had no clue what it was going to be about. It was simply sitting on a Magnificent Seven rec list with no summary or pairing attached and I decided that I liked the title so I gave it a shot. I’m so glad I did.

Tapping out somewhere in the novel-length category, The Lucifer Match is as much about pain and loss as it is about hope and redemption, with all of those sometimes weaving together so tightly in the story it’s hard to tell one from the other. Chris, in particular, is put through an emotional wringer that ends up affecting all of the seven, and both helps and hinders his growing relationship with Vin. Despite all the angst and hurt (of which there is a lot) in this fic, the author still does an admirable job of creating a storyline that makes the reader feel hope for a better future for all the characters, as well as finally close a dark chapter in Chris’ past.

Overall, I’d say that if you’re looking for a story to sink your teeth into or are just curious about how things might have went after the series ended, this is the fic for you.

Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Ezra/Buck
Categories: Angst, AU, Friendship, Pre-Slash, Romance
Length: epic
Warnings: abusive relationship, non-explicit rape, murder

Author on LJ: n/a

Review:There are a lot of Modern Magnificent Seven AUs around, but one of the oldest is the ATF verse, a modern verse where the seven work as ATF agents. Nothing Ventured takes place in an AU of the ATF verse, where Ezra and Buck go undercover in a biker gang.

I love the romance aspect of this fic. Buck is one of my favorite characters in the Mag7 fandom and he's so sweet in this fic. He finds himself attracted to Ezra and doesn't know what to do about it, but being Buck he dives in whole-heartedly and thinks about it later.

The characterization in this fic isn't spot on to the original series, but it fits well with the universe of the story. JD in particular acts a bit out of character, but his jealousy of Buck and Ezra's relationship is understandable and necessary for the plot.

Please keep in mind that this is a relatively dark story, so if you squick easily don't read it.

Review:
When a routine transport turns out to be a gold transport, Chris comes along to keep an eye on Ezra, per the Judge's orders. Thus it's a sulky Ezra, a suspicious Chris, and a terribly amusing Buck who ride into a gold town to find... not very much gold, actually. Plus a store owner who is buying gold at prices that seem just a little too good to be true.

This fic fits into my absolute least favorite Mag7 subgenre: the Ezra is Terribly Misjudged (tm [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon ) genre. Fortunately J Brooks (who is rapidly becoming my go-to author for good M7 fic) manages to avoid most of the worst excesses of this type of fic: Chris is sometimes a jerk, but he's not abusive and he's never cruel; Ezra is sulky, but he more than holds his own (*never* get on Ezra's bad side) and is not at all woobiesque; and Buck is, simply put, perfect. Couple that with a good action plot, a mystery, and some sparingly used and very well-drawn OCs, and you have a rollicking adventure fic with laugh-out-loud moments and even an awww moment or two.

After realizing that Nathan doesn't really get paid for all of the healing he does, the gang gets together to show their gratitude.

This is just lovely. When you think about it, Nathan does work the hardest of any of the seven, and (according to fanon, at least) he doesn't get paid for all of the healing he does on the side. To see that acknowledged as well as all of the perfectly in-character gifts and kindnesses from the rest of the seven is very satisfying and more than a little sweet. A fic that is all about friendship, in the best possible way.
