Summary:
Some people have hobbies. MacGyver gets shot at.

Review:
While out on a hike, MacGyver gets cornered by assassins and encounters an unlikely ally, his old nemesis Murdoc. Despite MacGyver's reluctance, they team up, but of course with Murdoc nothing is ever simple.

The author really has a grasp of both characters here, and I love their banter. We see why Murdoc was always the best villain of the show; he's MacGyver's equal, and able to keep up with him, and is in fact sometimes several steps ahead. Very much like an episode, there's some low-key action, a little bit of humor, and some classic MacGyvering to get out of their sticky situation.

I can't resist including the below quote, which really encapsulates their interactions and the story very well:

Murdoc smiled at him. “You sound as if you’re not happy to see me,” he said in an almost insulted voice.

“I can’t imagine why.”

“See? That’s another thing we have in common, you and I.” If Murdoc was getting the sarcasm, he was doing a good job of pretending not to. But Mac had just survived two assassination attempts, and hadn’t even had lunch. He wasn’t in the mood.

“No! We’ve got nothing in common!”

“Why, MacGyver! You sound as if you don’t like me! What have I ever done to you?”

“Well, there was the time you tried to kill me, the time you tried to kill me, and, oh, yeah, the - time - you - tried - to - kill - me!”

“That’s all in the past, though, MacGyver.”

“That was three weeks ago!”

Review:
When Pete is recruited by British military intelligence to infiltrate a particularly dangerous IRA splinter group, MacGyver comes along to provide backup. A day later, Pete's cover is blown, the military's only other informant has disappeared, and a lethal riot is brewing. It's up to Mac to step in and try to salvage the situation before the streets of Belfast run red with blood.

Wow. This fic is *amazing*. Not only are Mac and Pete perfectly in character (right down to Mac's tendency to fix every technical and mechanical problem in sight), but the writing is as good as (if not better) than you usually find in published works, and the plot layered and captivating. Frankly, I don't think I've ever read a piece of fanfic so tightly written -- there is not a single misstep in characterization, writing, or plotting.

As great as all of those aspects of the fic are, however, they pale in comparison to the author's brilliant rendering of Ireland. Either MacBedh is Irish or she has done a phenomenal amount of research (or both), because the historical details of the Troubles (the time when the IRA and the British government were duking it out; this particular story is set in 1985) and of Ireland itself are remarkably authentic. Reading this fic, I could picture myself actually in Ireland (and now have an overwhelming urge to go visit there).

If you are a fan of action stories or if you have any interest in Ireland, then you should definitely check this fic out. Easily the best MacGyver fic I've ever read.

Review:
Murdoc finally kills Mac. It doesn't stick.

Thus begins the first MacGyver story I've ever read. Despite the fact that Murdoc has a suspiciously detailed knowledge of immortals, he doesn't kill Mac permanently. Instead, he bundles Mac up for a road trip to prove that Mac is immortal (for some reason Mac isn't willing to take Murdoc at his word. Imagine that.) and they proceed to get a lot more intimate than you might expect (certainly more than *I* expected -- there's something to be said for going into a story cold). They end up in Paris, because Mac needs a teacher, and everyone knows Paris is the best place to go for that sort of thing.

Not having much experience with the MacGyver fandom (though I'd love for that to change, hint hint), I don't yet have an OTP. Mac/Murdoc is probably not going to be it, because I like my fictional relationships to be loving, which isn't really possible when you are trying to pair two mortal enemies. That said, Jane and Julie did a pretty good job of laying the groundwork for a relationship that could some day turn healthy and by the end of the story I can almost understand Murdoc's motivations (no clue on Mac, but then he just died, so he's allowed to do the occasional stupid thing). Plus you have an *awesome* showing by a Highlander character (who will remain nameless for spoiler purposes).

Final verdict: no MacGyverisms (boo!), but some great characterizations of both Mac (especially with regards to the conflict between his pacifism and the necessity of fighting if he wants to remain alive, now that he's immortal) and Murdoc (especially with regards to his motivation for wanting to keep Mac alive and his subsequent semi-creepy possessiveness) make this a must-read for MacGyver fans.
