Summary:

When NHL star Patrick Kane's off-ice antics finally get him into trouble for the last time, captain and best friend Jonathan Toews has one final trump card to keep him from being traded: marriage...to each other. But between being the first openly gay hockey players, facing down a lockout, and the fact that Patrick has been in love with Jonny for years, will these two ever be able to work past their miscommunication to realize that their marriage may not be as much of a sham as they think it is?

Review:

First things first, a disclaimer: I am very new to hockey fandom. As such, I consider myself utterly unqualified to review the authors' characterization of the people appearing in this fic. I'll be reccing this almost as an original work.

But if you're fine with that, and if you love the fake relationship trope and all that it entails, then Marry Me A Little is the fic for you. It features such timeless classics as 'I've been in love with you since we first met', tooootally platonic sleep cuddling, emotional constipation, 'all our friends/family are surprisingly unsurprised by our relationship', fear of exposing one's unrequited feelings, the angstful suppression of said feelings for the sake of the fake relationship, running hot and cold in the attempt to suppress said feelings, and more communication failure than you can shake a hockey stick at. And let's not forget the dramatic reveal of fully requited feelings and the ensuing Happily Ever After.

But seriously, folks. So much communication failure. So much communication failure that multiple side characters in the fic make a point to tell the two of them to pull their heads out of their asses and actually communicate about important things. In fact, my only serious gripe with the fic is how bafflingly resistant Patrick and Jonny are to calmly talking things out. They go through multiple cycles of conflict and resolution throughout the fic, but with so little genuine discussion going on, the resolutions to their issues feel superficial and incomplete, provided that they're resolved at all.

What makes up for it is the sense that other characters notice and have opinions on the miscommunication roller coaster that is Jonny and Patrick's marriage. bessyboo and thisissirius don't just make the rest of the cast silent or blindly supportive bystanders. The vast majority of the people that appear in this fic have their own observations and opinions on the marriage, and though they're all supportive of the relationship, that doesn't stop some of them from expressing reservations about this or that consequence of the two of them being married and out while still being prominent hockey players. That level of detail and consideration creates a wondrously complex narrative that keeps the fic from becoming hyperfocused on Jonny and Patrick and their respective emotional struggles.

But that attention to detail isn't restricted to the people that appear in the fic. Even various news outlets offer their two cents on the relationship through a series of mock articles. Personally, I doubt that the media would be as kind to the first out and married hockey players in the league as they are in the fic, (which is probably why there's no mock FOX News article), but hey, this is fanfiction. We're only required to abide by reality as much as is necessary for the purposes of the story.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this fic to every hockey RPF fan out there, because obviously YKINMK and I won't assume that everyone is a fan of the fake relationship trope. But if you are, and you've been hesitating to read this because of reasons that may or may not include its prodigious length, then I would definitely say to take the leap. Don't worry, I won't chirp you (much) for taking more than four days to finish it.

Title: Blue Would Still Be Blue
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Categories: Age difference, angst, romance, drama, harlequin, modern AU
Length: Long (32,376 words)
Warnings: Unsafe sex

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] winterstorrm
Author Website: Winterstorrm

Author's Summary:
When widower Arthur Pendragon finds out that his three children have conspired to help him find 'someone to kiss' by placing an ad on an internet dating site, he allows his guilt to push him into agreeing to go on a succession of dates even though he's determined that he's not lonely and doesn't believe in 'love'. However, someone does set his heart racing, but it's not one of the endless parade of beautiful women he has to choose from, it's the children's new babysitter, Merlin.

Review:
I have a deep, abiding love for romance novels, and Harlequin-themed fanfiction is like the perfect intersection between my favorite book genre and the fandom(s) I love. There is no better example of this than Blue Would Still Be Blue.

This is a story about second chances. Arthur has never felt that spark, that feeling of being deeply in love. He loved the mother of his children, but not in that passionate, all-consuming way. "Love is just nature's illusion," Arthur says. He doesn't believe in romantic love because he's never experienced it.

While the attraction between Arthur and Merlin is immediate, the obstacles to their future happiness (which are mostly Arthur’s doing) result in a slow build with longing looks and lovely pining and UST. The feelings between them are so intense, and so beautifully drawn. I was really moved by how desperately they wanted each other, how they ached for one another and how miserable they were not to have the kind of relationship they both so obviously wanted.

While Arthur, Merlin and their Happily Ever After (the required ending to any Harlequin style story, of course) is the main focus here, the supporting characters were charming and funny. From the parade of women to Arthur's children to Morgana, there were lighthearted moments aplenty to serve as the perfect foil to the slow burn between Arthur and Merlin.

It almost feels like cheating to take my AU Week recs from Supernatural RPS fandom. Also I missed last week, so here, have two.

Author's Summary:
Jared Padalecki, Class Two Superhero, has lived his entire life in his small town. Another disappointing Superboyfriend is the kick that he needs to get out. He arrives in the City, expecting to be overwhelmed, instead it seems that he finds everything that he has always been looking for.

Review:
I love superheroes, and there are some cracking J-squared superhero stories out there. This one has vague echoes of Sky High rather than DC or Marvel with its classification of heroes into different classes, and that's one of the reasons I love it. It's appropriately larger than life, and still not afraid to toss outrageous ideas at the reader at frequent intervals.

It has plenty of outrageous ideas, as well. There's the Superhero Shield of Obliviousness (apparently a domino mask really is enough to keep your identiry an iron-clad secret, even from your boyfriend); there is Misha, and who could not love a telepathic mentor who quacks occasionally; there is a Chad who would be an awesome super if he didn't have the attention span of a ferret; there are powers that could and have destroyed countries; and not one place in the entire story gets a proper name.

OK, so there are a few rough edges in the storytelling, a few places where the short sentence, short paragraph comics-book style gets a bit too short, but it more than makes up for it by making me feel like a kid again. A kid who has just raided his big brother's soft porn collection, granted, but that's just the kind of story this is.

Author's Summary:
Jared and Jensen are in love, have been for most of their lives. There is just one tiny little problem: Jensen is imaginary, and they can only be together in Jared's dreams. How can Jared ever find true love in the real world when his heart belongs to a figment of his imagination?

Review:
This story, written for the 2010 Supernatural/J2 Big Bang, is an excellent example of what I really like about the genre. As an AU I have no issues with it involving characters bearing the names of real people, so I can just sit an enjoy the original story and watch the film in my head.

It is a very original story as well, told with a light touch and a careful doling out of clues as to what's going on. Until the whole story resolves, you are never left with quite enough to be sure that you've guessed right, and even then there are elements that are simply not explained.

Quite apart from that we get to follow Jared through high school and into college, which is a journey all in itself. Jared doesn't have the easiest time coming out at school, though it's made much easier by Chad being utterly awesome. Seriously, this Chad is the best straight friend a gay boy could ask for, not hesitating for a moment to face down the sports teams when they first start to be threatening. Successfully too, since he doesn't scruple to hit them where it hurts.

There are three sequels, fairly epic in length themselves, taking us past college and into real life. Two of them revolve around meeting the parents, with two very differently charged atmospheres bent around by the central weirdness of the story, while the third is a fascinating glimpse into what makes some people react so negatively. Despite throwing in the homophobia warning above, I would heartily recommend reading that one at least (A Fork In The Road) purely to help get some understanding of how reasonable people can be unreasonable.

Length: Epic (43083 words)

Summary:
Puck is a cop who is assigned to investigate some vandalism at boutique owner's Kurt Hummel's store. Kurt is horrified to see him appear some years after their anonymous hook up in a club resulted in the birth of his young son and does everything he can to avoid the studly detective. Puck has no memory of him and is baffled by Kurt's nervous reaction to him but is interested enough to try and get to the bottom of whatever Kurt is trying to hide.

Review:
I hesitate for the longest time about which fic I could rec for our Harlequin theme week when I suddenly remember this story I read a long time ago on lj. I was quite happy to find it had been posted on AO3 recently.
You find here some of the best Harlequin clichés with a slight twist as it's a slash pairing with a male pregnancy. I love Puck as a cop with amnesia, Kurt as a competent shop owner and protective father.
Both Puck and Kurt are in characters while being quite true to the particularities of this AU. The rest of the cast is also well represented.
All in all, this fic is well-written, the dialogs are really well-done and it's a great Harlequin's adaptation.

Review :
In honor of Valentines' week here is one of my favorite fic based on a Harlequin plot line...
Calic0cat is a great author whose fic are fun to read. Here she definitely plays up the fun e,d her crack-astic humor is just devastating. Of course the characters go a little bit OOC (I mean, I can't really see Heero reading an Harlequin Anthology) but they are still recognizable. A bit of a warning still, Relena is not presented as an upstanding Lady here.
The banter between Heero, Duo and cie is just wonderful. And Heero's plotting is both sweet and fun.

I'll admit that for the longest time I simply could not understand all of the fandom love for Norrington. Then I saw James without his wig and, well. I'm not made of stone.

This was the very first Jack/James fic I ever read and it remains my favorite, full of kidnapping and dramatic escapes, villains and heroes, adventure and romance. The writing is very good, the plot is engaging, and the boys are both rather adorable while still being in character. Lots of fun, lots of action, and lots of smut make for a very satisfying read.

On the way to Ryan and Jon’s wedding, Spencer and Tom break up. Brendon’s just supposed to be payback, but it doesn’t seem to work out that way.

This is my idea of what a true harlequin fic is. Full of false conclusions and impossibly romantic dates, this story actually works in a way that many harlequin fics don’t. I’m actually not the biggest fan of romance in fics, but pulls off romantic without crossing the line to sappy. And it’s able to keep the reader interested to the end.
