Author’s Summary:
In which Yamamoto wanders through life smiling, joking, and terrifying bystanders.

Review:

How could exploring the character who joined a criminal organisation by asking seriously if he could play the mafia game be anything less than gripping?

Yamamoto is introduced as a popular schoolboy with a devotion to baseball. He is virtually a beacon of normality compared to the flashily murderous people Reborn introduces to Tsuna’s life. Yet, he greets these people with a cheerful smile, while Tsuna quivers in far. His father may be an sword-wielding assassin, but Yamamoto’s blithe unconcern is still pretty odd.

For the Love of the Game looks at how a post-canon Yamamoto might be affected by his experiences. How does he relate to the people in his life? What makes him afraid? Why is he still smiling?

As always, Metisket’s writing is very engrossing, giving a fascinating look into the POV character’s reaction to what is going on and an equally fascinating portrayal of the people they are interacting with.

This is set post-series, so if you’re not familiar with Katekyou Hitman Reborn, you are unlikely to follow what is happening at all. (Katekyou Hitman Reborn is not particularly deep, but it takes great pleasure in coming up with unlikely concepts and failing to justify them in any way, which stacks into being quite complicated.) For the Love of the Game isn’t more violent than canon, but it treats the violence a lot more seriously.

Freeze on the Stones by Robin4 (NC-17)

Title: Freeze on the Stones
Fandom: Once Upon A Time
Pairing: Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Emma/?, Regina/?
Categories: Drama, AU, For Want Of A Nail, Darker and Grittier, Romance, Family, Redemption
Length:  Super-Epic (635 000 words)
Warnings: Non-con, Torture, lots of non-consensual things going on, violence, a couple of the more evil characters die

Author Website: Robin 4 on AO3 or Robin 4 on fanfiction.net

Author’s Summary:
One choice can change fate. Regina chooses love, Snow stays silent, and Cora casts the curse. Rumplestiltskin knows that trusting Cora with that much power is dangerous—but he has no choice if he wants to find his son. 28 years later, Gold and Regina awaken in Storybrooke and must work together to make the Savior believe.
Yes, this Storybrooke is far darker than the one you know.

Regarding the warnings:
A theme that comes up several times in Freeze on the Stones is the nature of consent and responsibility. Multiple characters are magically mind-controlled in various ways and encouraged or forced to harm or betray others. The different approaches and the different ways characters deal with it are interesting, but unflinching.

If you’re not comfortable with reading about people being trapped or forced into doing things, I’d definitely advise giving this fic a miss. None of the bad stuff is romanticised, but a lot of it is graphic. (Also, two men become better people because they are in love with good women. Which seems like a rather dodgy message to me.)

Review:
Freeze on the Stones assumes knowledge of canon. I would expect someone unfamiliar with canon to find the characters and circumstances hard to follow. However, the story takes the time to develop the characters it focuses on, so a basic grasp of the TV series is definitely enough to get you through.

Despite being a very long story, Freeze on the Stones is actually relatively fast-paced. It follows multiple people at any point and generally gives them one scene a chapter for the length of their story arc. Unusually for this style of writing, I only rarely found one story arc less compelling than the others. All the scenes were all well-written enough to be compelling, even when I didn’t particularly care for the main characters.

As you have probably gathered, this is a for want of a nail alternate universe, which explores what might have happened had it been Cora who cast the curse that created Storybrooke. While the result is very recognisable - the same characters in the same area in similar circumstances - there are many fascinating reversals from canon Season 1.

One of the more interesting themes it explores is Rumplestiltskin’s relationship with power. In canon, he feels extremely powerless without his magic, despite having sufficient money, reputation and blackmail to unquestionably be the most powerful person in town. In Freeze on the Stones, he is faced with a mayor who has the magical knowledge and viciousness to threaten him. It’s enjoyable to watch him deal with both that and a more equal relationship with the heroes.

Regina’s story is not about choosing between power and the people who love her, but about endlessly attempting to save the people she loves from her mother. It makes for less character development, as Regina simply ages to be more confident and caring. However, she is more active as a hero than a villain, so we still get a good look at her character and it is hard not to feel for her quiet sadness, calm compassion and desperate need to protect those she loves.

Review: "You may not thank me for saving your life, later on, you know. In fact, there's a good chance you may curse me for it. You might be better off if I disposed of you now."

As the summary says, nothing about Scorpius is ever truly going to be fluff, but this is an intriguing little fic about motivation and where the character comes from that does convincingly sell the idea of him deciding, after his own fashion, to make himself a family.

Most of what is here is still extraordinarily bleak. But all the same, Scorpius and baby, and it's kind of heartwarming too, in a weird way.

Summary: You make me feel there's a part of me that I want to get back again.

Review: I'll start by quoting the prompt that sparked this vid, as the vidder does: "I have long wanted a vid that explores the creepy, sexualized, intertwined nature of their relationship, right down to the blood-licking in the last season. It would also focus somewhat on the Scorpius that lives in John's head, and how he can never get away from his tormenter, and their twisted relationship." - Prompt from Destina

Considering how overtly sexual the relationship was on-screen, there's not a whole lot of Crichton/Scorpius around. I guess that's because Scorpius is very much not a pretty boy in the conventional sense, but he was a unique and oddly tragic/sympathetic figure, and his enemy/ally(/enemy) relationship with Crichton was fascinating from any angle. This vid plays up the sexual, slash angle and makes as much a meal of the stuff that was on the screen as Scorpius lunching on Crichton's brain matter. (sorry.)

Great vid that captures the performances of the two actors and what they did with this relationship, which started out as interrogator/victim, and ended with the characters living so much in each other's minds and goals. The vid is also very violent and definitely has a non-consensual vibe to it.

Review:

So long story short, MMD is a Japanese dance program that lets you choreograph dances using character models. dexm's video is actually a recreation of another video that uses the same choreography but a different version of the song. (Which makes this rather tenuously a Tiger & Bunny rec.)

As someone who can't understand a lick of Japanese, I find the majority of MMD videos to be briefly interesting, then rather boring. So while I'm certainly no MMD connoisseur, the fact that I can watch this one from start to finish without glazing over is the most poorly framed yet sincere praise I have ever given and will probably ever give. The camera angles constantly draw the eye and dexm introduces new video effects to keep the viewer ooh-ing and ahh-ing right up until the last frame. The color scheme of light and dark greys calls back to the song's original Vocaloid version and its video, but dexm introduces the darker color scheme and the Tiger & Bunny fandom's Dark Tiger to highlight the singer's ambivalence and confusion. Though there may be a great deal that's recycled from previous MMD versions of the song, dexm adapts and improves on the formula in a way that makes their version a must-see.

Visually, it's a delight, and the singer has a great rock and roll type voice that gives the song a certain vibrancy that the Vocaloid version sorely lacks. If you only watch one MMD video in your life, make sure it's this one.

Review: First I need to say how much I love Justice League and how I rooted for Shayera and John to get together. With that disclaimer, I can add that the artist’s style is amazing and totally captures the essence of their relationship. For anyone that watched Justice League, what makes John and Shayera good is that their romantic relationship develops as they fight to protect humans and defeat the villain of the week - it’s usually in the aftermath of a battle that they share companionship moments.

The picture illustrates just that, the two levels show their emotions and frame those little scenes we see in the show, adding a lovely pairing - first we see them in rest after the battle, then we see the sweet kiss. I really like the view from behind of them and the context of where they are, and I love even more their expressions in the first part.

Props for the gentle coloring and the style, so close to the canonical one.

It allows us to get to know Max better and it's nice to see him getting a happier ending.

The fic also has an interesting take on lycanthropy. I can't say much more without giving anything away. But this is definitely worth a read if you like modernized Supernatural worlds.

It’s also just begging to be a musical (as are most things)! Here’s my take on hockey captain Jack Zimmermann’s big 11 o’clock number, in which he has an “aha moment” about a certain Southern baking boy…

Review:

So to provide a little context, the concept of a Check, Please! musical stems from an AU idea that the comic's creator, Ngozi, tossed up on Twitter one day. To the delight of the fandom, sailorsun7 took the idea and ran with it, unleashing upon the world this marvelous piece of artistry.

Summary: An apparently abandoned Hydra facility turns into a deathtrap for Peggy and the SSR team. Set after 1x08.

Review: It really could not be more of a stereotypical villain lair if they'd taken the design straight from one of those execrable Captain America comics, Peggy thought, shining her torch above and around the empty, echoing halls. And it was entirely cleaned out. Not a stick of furniture, not even so much as a bolt. When Hydra cleared out, they really cleared out.

This is a solid gen adventure that delivers something I'd very much had the desire to see after watching the series -- our three favourite SSR agents working together and respecting each other for their strengths and understanding each other's weaknesses, all of which get showcased during the course of the story. It's a great teamfic full of banter and tropeyness (but never too much to take over the story) which makes me wish there was more of its like out there.

Thompson's *cough* still a prat, but he's their prat and still wants to do the right thing, even if he always(?) falls down with the execution, even if we're still not sure he'd come through in the crunch, but he gets the chance to be brave and tenacious here and show some real strength. Sousa gets to be quietly smart and self-sacrificing. Peggy is competent and in-charge despite the nominal ranks, but also permitted to be human, isn't invulnerable or without fear. Above all it's teamwork that enables them to survive their situation in this fic, and every member of the trio playing their part.

Review:

To those of you who haven't heard of Hirohiko Araki's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, I'm not surprised. You, however, should be, because this manga is as well loved in Japan as Naruto, which I'm sure most people in fandom are at least aware of, whether they want to be or not. But taking into account the manga artist's very distinct style, it is perhaps unsurprising that the manga, however beloved in Japan, has failed to catch on in the U.S. In fact, it is the pointedly visual aspect of the manga that has led me to rec a fanart instead of a fic, because words can never quite capture the peculiar spectacle of the characters that Araki's style imbues them with.

I'm no student of the Japanese language, but as best as I (and Google Translate) can figure out, the title of this artwork in English is roughly No Return to Utopia. (Actual Japanese speakers are encouraged to correct me.) It's a poignant title that encapsulates the artwork and where it fits into the canon, viewing the colorful 'utopia' where Kakyoin and Jotaro's story came to its climax through the morbidly placed window in an otherwise greyscale image. The colorful skyline seems like a beautiful dream in comparison to Kakyoin and Jotaro's respective wry and possessive expressions.

Even if you'd never heard of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, the skill of the artist still makes this worth the effort to click. Nevertheless, if you have any interest in manga or anime whatsoever, try to check Araki's massive, multi-series epic if you get the chance.

Review:

Greek and Roman mythology has always bored me when it didn't faintly irritate me. The Fruits of Hades, with Persephone as its cunning protagonist, has crystallized in my mind why that is by way of a perpendicular contrast. On the surface, it intersects with canon, fitting into the traditional narrative. But although it seems as though the instigator of the narrative is Hades, things are not quite as they appear.

All the actors within this fic, from the lowly nymph Persephone to the god of gods Zeus, are chillingly mercenary in this adaptation of the myth. Each acts according to their own selfish desires vis-à-vis Persephone, who is objectively in the weakest and most vulnerable position of the lot. But fortune favors the bold, and through patience and deft cunning, she manages not only to evade a terrible fate but put herself into a position of power that gives her the autonomy she previously was robbed of.

Summary:

Elodie knew that a princess had only one chance to rule wisely. Elodie knew wrong.

Review:

Long Live the Queen is a peculiar little simulation game that takes place in a magical kingdom, following the forty weeks leading up to the fifteenth birthday and subsequent coronation of the Princess Elodie. She begins as a sheltered young girl, utterly unprepared for the duties that await her. Over the course of the forty weeks, the player chooses what skills Elodie should learn from her tutors and selects her reactions to events. If the proper skills and responses are chosen, Elodie lives to her fifteenth birthday and becomes Queen. If not, Elodie dies. And dies, and dies, and dies.

Choose Well, Choose Wisely, Choose Again presents an Elodie who becomes conscious of the repetitive nature of the game over the course of her resurrections and subsequent 'playthroughs'. Most interestingly, tuesday incorporates the game's unusual mechanics into the in-universe lore and subtly molds the functionally immortal Elodie into an avatar of the gamer who plays the game again and again in search of perfection.

This fic is well written and in character. Which I have found is rare with Michael since his character is so subtle many writers end up writing him as submissive without meaning to.

His first year in the NHL isn't easy, but Jack has spent his entire life playing through the hurt.

Review:

Note: While Check, Please! doesn't require knowing anything about hockey beyond the fact that it's a team sport played on ice, of the nature of the wound does require a functional knowledge of professional hockey and how its seasons are scheduled. Being a hockey RPF crossover, this fic does incorporate real hockey players, and knowledge of those players provides useful context for their roles in the fic.

A lot of the Check, Please! fic I read tends to be of the lighter variety. Humorous and/or cute, and generally threaded through with the pervasive sense of, 'oh, you adorable boys'. Considering how light-hearted the canon is, it's probably not surprising that the fanfiction I choose to read follows in that direction.

of the nature of the wound is not one of those fics. It's also not an easy fic to get through, namely because it focuses on Jack's anxieties about being a closeted professional hockey player. You could, uncharitably if honestly, call it Jack's downward spiral of anxiety and loneliness.

buchanan's fic exemplifies the proverb “it is always darkest just before the dawn” in that it feels very much like the very beginning of a story that we are not (yet) privy to, not just in terms of Jack and Bitty's burgeoning relationship, but also the NHL as a whole upon the coming out of one of its most recognized hockey duos. Hopefully more of that will unfold in buchanan's expected sequel.

And now that I've given you a lot of reasons not to read the fic, I suppose I should mention why I am actually reccing it: buchanan does a fantastic job of weaving the fluffy and fictional Check, Please! microcosm into the much colder real world, where people change and move past who they were and sometimes grow apart, and where they succeed, fail, break, and struggle to mend what is broken. Jack Zimmermann does not feel like a fictional character as buchanan writes him. Nor does Eric Bittle, nor even Chowder, who is something of a caricature even in the comic's canon. It truly is a testament to buchanan's grasp of emotional complexity that I clung, riveted until the end, in spite of the fic's darker tone and truly annoying ten-line section breaks. (No, seriously, keep a finger on the space bar or page down key.)

It’s a waist up digital piece of Nomi and Amanita, pg and colorful. It portrays them in a very iconic moment in the series, when Amanita defends Nomi from a friend that made rude comments on her transexuality. It’s such a vulnerable moment and sweet moment for them, and the art is so light, that it fits perfectly with the canon.

I love the texture in Amanita’s hair and in Nomi’s dress, love the highlights in Nomi’s hair and how soft Amanita's expression looks. The background isn’t distracting and the whole piece is just simple in the right measure, without losing the details.

Ah, in-laws. There's really nothing quite like watching people get along, or fail to get along, with their SO's parents. There's also something particularly poignant about watching Eric Bittle get along so well with his boyfriend's parents, when his relationship with his own father is, shall we say, strained.

I've always been weak for fanfiction that fleshes out characters that seldom appear in canon. Particularly characters like Bad Bob Zimmermann, whose hockey career manages to be something of a lingering specter in a comic that honestly has nothing to do with the man himself. on the sidelines wishing for right now brings out the person and the father behind the specter while simultaneously giving Bitty a father figure who is welcoming and kind while his own father slowly learns to adapt.
