Review: This is a series of two fics, “Replay” and “Numbers” and an added collection of snippets and drabbles set in the same verse that highlight some of the moments we didn’t get to see or that were only hinted at.

The premise is that old man Charles Xavier as we know him from the X-Men movies and with all the knowledge, experience and power of his old self travels back in time, by casting his mind into his younger body. It’s his plan to change all the horrible events that made Magneto the person he is and he does it in the best way he can think of: As he knows Erik has been in love for him for decades now, what’s easier than to give him what he wants?

“Replay” is a delightful and sometimes hilarious fic about old Charles having to come to grips with being young again and with the moral dilemma of using his future knowledge to “take advantage” of Erik. He’s so engrossed in his own dilemma and so very Charles in some of the decisions he makes - like not reading Erik’s mind for the entire fic - that makes the little twist here work. Although the author - or Erik - gives the twist away pretty early on to make even more obvious that Charles can be the king of denial if he wants to, Charles never allows himself to pick up on it. It makes all his interactions with Erik very interesting and all the back and forth and paralleling of the things that happened in the future they left behind and what’s happening in their new past is well thought out and nicely used to describe the sort of people they are.

I think I like the second part, “Numbers” a little better even than “Replay” although it’s really imperative to read them in order and preferably together. “Numbers” is Eriks version of that happened in “Replay” and his voice is appropriately dry and a joy to read. Also his reflections on Charles and his obliviousness are just too funny.

But Not With Haste by uraneia (NC-17)

Title: But Not With Haste
Fandom: Teen Wolf (set in the X-Men universe)
Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Categories: Fusion, Mutant AU, first time, getting together, angst, romance, drama, action
Length: Long (20,776 words)
Warnings: Minor character death.

Author Websites: favicon uraneia

Author's Summary: It's been years since Derek escaped from the hunters who killed his family and bound him in his human form. He travels solo, never staying in one place, keeping under the radar--until a skinny, smart-mouthed kid stows away in the back of his truck.

Four months ago Stiles's first kiss put his best friend in a coma. His dad gave him a couple hundred bucks and a hug and told him to run. By the time Stiles witnesses the cage fighter known as Wolverine take out a shotgun and its wielder with his bare hands, he's got a plan. He knows there's a school in New York for kids like him. All he has to do is get there.

OR, in which Derek is the werewolf version of Wolverine and Stiles is Rogue and the plot of X-Men progresses accordingly, with a few notable deviations.

Review:
Derek makes a damn fine Wolverine, and when Stiles tries to hide in the back of his truck, Derek thinks the kid is probably trading blow jobs for transit, but not so much, because Stiles is Rogue.
excerpt )

From there they head to a school in New York. You get the drift -- Teen Wolf fused with the X-Men movie from 2000. I'm not always a fan of fics based on movie plots, not when I feel like I'm just being walked through the plot with some names changed. But that's not the case here. uraneia has thought about both fandoms and the ways they can interlock rather than giving us a simple re-telling. And really, what I enjoyed was the writing. Instead of telling us things like, "Stiles had missed his dad," they write:

He doesn’t look his dad in the face right away. Stilinski tradition—they have to give each other enough time to pretend they’re not crying. Otherwise it’ll just escalate. It’s not pretty.

The dialogue is terrific, and I like Stiles as Rogue, because I think the inability to touch makes for compelling storytelling. Though, as you can imagine, Derek and Stiles do find a way. The progression of their relationship and the eventual action vs. the alpha pack (as Magneto and his allies) play out well.

A multi-fandom vid for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon's celebration of female characters.

Review:
calapine makes an unconventional but beautiful choice with her song, and for something so epic in scope, she makes it impactful on a personal scale as well, and deeply uplifting. This tribute is amazing not only for its subject matter, but also for its diversity. Women are not just awesome when they are gorgeous and kick-ass and come out with both guns blazing, but they're also awesome when they're doing science experiments, or being brave, or making difficult decisions.

Women can be some of the most harshly judged characters on screen -- because often, women are their own harshest critics. This vid highlights some unexpected choices, and reminds us that every single woman is more than just the few seconds we see them on screen -- they each have their own stories.

Enigma by Yahtzee (PG-13)

Title: Enigma by Yahtzee
Fandom: X-Men: First Class, fused with other X-Men canon (comics & movies 'verse)
Pairing: Erik/Charles
Categories: AU, Angst, Drama, Family, Time-travel
Length: Medium (11,146 words)
Warnings: multiple major & minor character deaths, includes World War II & concentration camps and violence, past child abuse, and brief cameos with real people

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 / [personal profile] yahtzee
Author Website: faviconYahtzee / Yahtzee's website

Summary:
Erik...finds a reversey-time mutant...and wakes up in the past. This time, though, it's before he ever met Charles - in fact, it's before his mother died.

He can save his mother that one time (thanks to his mastery over powers carrying back), but what does Erik do after that? Does he stick around, or escape and run to find Charles again (and hope everything doesn't go wrong)?

Review:
A deep character exploration (and de-/re-construction) of Erik, as well as a thrilling alternate history starting with Erik turning the tide of the European front in World War II. Erik's actions make mutants know far earlier, with interesting cultural implications (I particularly enjoyed that he was played by Montgomery Clift in a movie about him, with Audrey Hepburn as his love interest). He also has his parents, and that changes him further. He still meets Charles, and they do form a team together and train other mutants, but the changes in the past have huge impacts on how things turn out.

I was also astonished to discover how short Enigma is. Somehow the message, and history covered, and developments in character have such an epic scope, and yet it all fits compactly into a story slightly over eleven thousand words.

This story made me cry every time I've read it; the warnings for character death are to be taken seriously. But it's sort of a good kind of hurt. Erik changes everything, most of all himself, and by the ending it's like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders.

“I’ve heard from various customers, over the years. All of them say the same thing. They get what they want – but they pay a price that’s colder than cash. The price of getting what you want is losing what you have.”

Review:
In X-Men 2, there is a world-wide mutant telepathic attack. For most people (at least those not in planes or cars at the time), this manifested as a short-term migraine with no lasting consequences. Robert Chase, on the other hand, wakes up fourteen hours later with a blinding headache and strange, inexplicable good luck. Sadly, this does not mean he manages to get out of working with House.

What an intriguing concept! Movies (or shows) that depict world-wide events are ripe for crossovers and this is a particularly good one. More of a fusion than a crossover (characters from the X-Men don't show up until near the end), Mind Over Matter is a character study of what might happen if an adult suddenly finds out that he's a mutant. Npkedit does a great job with the revelations (just what is Chase's power?) as well as her characterizations. Chase is great, and House is perfectly and awesomely in-character, and their interactions are brilliant -- snarky and sarcastic and (maybe, if you squint) just a bit affectionate. Plus the X-Men cameos (McCoy!) are fantastic.

A solid crossover that takes the best of both canons, this is a great fic for anyone who enjoys a good fusion.

After X-Men 2, Logan goes on the road. He and Marie e-mail each other while he's gone.

It's amazing what an author can do with a really well-written epistolary fic. There were times this story nearly moved me to tears, and other times when I laughed out loud. Marie's youth and determination shine through, as does Logan's gruff affection and blunt language. I do wish the author hadn't brushed aside the whole Marie-touching-people issue, but it's a very minor quibble in an otherwise great fic.
