Review:
Even in Wonderland, fairytales haven't come true in a long time. Alice and Hatter face their Happy Ever After.

This fic turned out to be one of those stories I never knew I wanted until after I finished reading it. Simple and to the point, it explores what life is like after the happily-ever-after in the mini-series, with Alice and Hatter both taking mostly stumbling steps towards their own happy-ending. Though relatively short, every scene in this fic has an impact, driving home the fact that even though their story has all the elements it needs to be a fairytale, it isn’t…and sometimes that’s better.

Author's Summary: Once upon a time, there was a man called Hatter. Once upon a time, he had a story to tell.

Review: I’m a sucker for character backstory, and this one is done particularly well. This author goes to great pains to put together a past for Hatter that makes sense, coalescing beautifully over fifteen chapters to create a complete picture. It’s sensitive and creative and just GORGEOUS.

One critique I have is that I wish she’d spent just as much time exploring Hatter as he fell in love with Alice – we spend so much of this fic exploring who he was before he met her, and it would have been nice to re-explore the "original" story a little deeper with that new perspective. However, the conclusion definitely makes up for it, and on the whole it’s an extremely satisfying read. I’d recommend it to pretty much anyone. ^_^

Title: The Price of Tea

Category/genres: Pre-canon, post-canon, romance, introspection
Length: Medium (4,527)
Warnings: none

Author's Summary: Alice is a legend, a story, a history book, a puzzle. Hatter's trying to put the pieces together.

Review: Again, [livejournal.com profile] randombattlecry knocks it out of the park. My favorite part about her writing in this fandom is the way she interweaves Alice canon with Carrol’s original canon, and this story is an excellent example of that talent. Hatter’s conversations with his Mad grandfather are simply brilliant, nonsensical and yet wise. The way she alludes to Hatter’s and Alice’s growing romance is also well done, subtle in some places and intense in others. This is a FANTASTIC read. ^_^

Since both of these recs are pretty short, and I missed last week due to tons of life drama going on, I’m giving y’all both of them at once. Plus, as an added bonus, they both share a couple of things in common: a common theme of “Madness”, and in what is a truly remarkable coincidence for this fandom, they both take place at the end of Part 1 (not Part 2). The first one is a cute, fluff/humor piece, and the second one is much more dramatic.

Title: Symptoms of Madness
Author: [livejournal.com profile] song_of_mars
Rating: G
Fandom: Alice (Syfy)
Pairing: Alice/Hatter
Category/genres: Missing Scene, Romance
Length: Short (1,237)
Warnings: Takes place in Pt. 1 of Alice
Author's Website / LJ name / Links: [At the author’s writing journal]

Author's Summary: An interlude set of scenes that takes place off-camera as Alice and Hatter are journeying with Charlie to the Kingdom of Knights, and while they're sitting by the fire that night. A short conversation, and Alice 'noticing' Hatter and feeling uneasy about it.

Review: This is an adorable little ficlet, and even though it’s not an “Epic Rec”, per se, the author has such a good handle on Alice’s voice that I think it merits a rec here. I am very particular about my Alice voice – sometimes I don’t even like the Alice voice I’ve written in some of my fics – but her voice in this fic really resonates well to me. She’s stubborn, independent, and with a wry sense of humor that I find hilarious and immediately connect with. Plus, her contemplation of Hatter is one that every fangirl can empathize with. XP Definitely a cute little read that’s worth a peek.

Title: please excuse her for the day its just the way the medication makes her
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cynic_fic
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Alice (Syfy)
Pairing: Alice/Hatter, also Charlie is *awesome* in this fic
Category/genres: Drama, What-If AU
Length: Short (1,420)
Warnings: Based off the end of Part 1. Mentions of multiple suicide attempts.
Author's Website / LJ name / Links: [At the author’s journal]

Author's Summary: In which Alice is broken.

Review: I found this piece to be very powerful, and I loved it instantly. Alice in this fic is driven mad by the Dum’s torture, and in this state she reminds me very much of River in “Firefly”. Hatter is determined to take care of her, and Charlie still sticks around as her protector. The three of them are just gorgeous together in this piece. It’s a quick read, but it’s one that leaves an impression and stays with you as you continue to read in the fandom, and I basically rec it to anyone who’s willing.
