Fandom: Haven/Criminal Minds

Length: Long, 36,894 words
Warnings: canon level violence

Summary: When the FBI's BAU follow a serial killer to Haven, Maine, they find that murder and mystery are a lot more complicated in the unassuming sea-side town. The local cops don't want them there, the crime scenes don't make sense, and it doesn't take long for them to get in over their heads.

Review: This is a gen/casefile crossover set in season 4 of Haven and season 7 of Criminal Minds. It's basically channelling both shows, and juggling their sizeable casts so everyone gets their moments in the bargain. This collision could happen on screen and I would believe it.

It's told from the perspective of the members of the BAU team as they follow a case to the strange town of Haven and have to deal with prickly, secretive law enforcement and hostile, secretive townsfolk and alarming and occasionally violent town factions as well as their UnSub of the week. The outsider POV on Haven and its troubled detectives is a treat if you're familiar with the show and I should imagine it works if you're only familiar with Criminal Minds as well. Much (enjoyable) build-up is given to the revelation of Haven's town secrets and enabling Prentiss, Morgan, Hotch, and co. to accept and adjust to the somewhat unusual conditions under which murders might occur in this particular little seaside town. The casefile itself and the manner the mystery ties in with the troubles is also interesting.

I have no capacity to be intelligent about this one, only to glee fannishly, because the BAU comes to Haven and everyone is so exactly themselves. It's a perfect in-character intersection of the two shows.

Sorry for not posting in a long, long time guys! March has been difficult with college finals and daily blackouts. But school's over, so hopefully, I'll be posting weekly! :)

Author's Summary: We all make choices in life. Sometimes the smallest ones can change your life and the lives of everyone around you forever

Review: What I loved about this was how a single moment, a single decision, could have led Spencer to very different futures. The transition between what if and what did was seamless. It showed how the very essence of Spencer Reid, the curious, intelligent man that wants to help, existed in both worlds.

I'm sorry that I missed posting last week and this rec is a day late. I completely forgot when Friday was last week what with all the exams I had and there was a blackout last night. So sorry for that. But I'm here now with a shiny new rec! <3

Title: Strength of the Pack
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid/Derek Morgan
Categories: Action/Adventure, Case File, Drama, Established Relationship, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Romance,
Length: Epic 86,940
Warnings: Canon Violence

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] welfycat
Author's Website: Archive Of Our Own

Author's Summary: Spencer Reid has never known what it was like to have the protection of a family and a pack, until he was recruited for the BAU by renowned profiler Jason Gideon. Suddenly finding himself surrounded by wolves, Spencer must come to terms with his own heritage, learn what it means to be part of a team and a pack, all while training to become a profiler for the FBI.

After mating and bonding with his pack leader, Derek Morgan never expected that there could be anyone else. But when Spencer Reid joins the team, Derek has to accept his past before he can look to his future.

Unit Chief and pack leader Aaron Hotchner has his own set of worries. In between balancing the demands of the job with the needs of his pack he does his best to keep everyone safe and well. The members of his pack sometimes make this more of a challenge than he could have ever anticipated.

Review: I'm a complete sucker for Threesomes which was why I was hooked on this story just by reading the summary. It's the kind of story where Spencer is brought into the BAU by Gideon but the thing is, they're shifters. This fic showcases different cases the BAU is brought in to investigate and while I lament at the fact that though cases are developed, they aren't very, very explored. But the main theme of this fic is the relationships between the pack, specifically the emerging relationship between Hotch, Spencer and Derek.

Fandom: Criminal Minds, The Sentinel, NCIS
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, past Aaron Hotchner/Haley Hotchner
Categories: action/adventure, AU, bonding, crossover, drama, first-time, fluff, family, friendship, hurt/comfort, romance, virgin
Length: Medium, 10,109 words
Warnings: Aaron as a Sentinel, Spencer as a Guide. :)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dameange
Author's Website: Lady Angel on ao3

Author's Summary: Aaron Hotchner did not expect for his senses to activate when he was in his thirties. He did not expect his guide to be a fifteen year old genius. He did not expect to catch his wife in their bed with another man.

He certainly did not expect to fall in love again.

Review: SQUEAL. SQUEAL. SQUEAL. I loved this story soooo much! It's a different take than what I'm used to seeing in CM fandom. For one, Aaron and Spencer already have a relationship albeit the one between Sentinel and their Guides but still. I love the fact that Spencer and Jack have such a strong relationship here! It's not often that there is an established relationship between them.

I can't say more without spoiling you so I'll end it here and allow you guys to read and love Life Changes for yourself. :)

Bait & Switch by lapenserosa (NC-17)

Title: Bait & Switch
Fandom: Criminal Minds-Oz Crossover
Pairing: Implied Christopher Keller/Spencer Reid
Categories: Angst, Case File, Crossover, Dark, Drama, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery, Sad Story
Length: Long (~39,954)
Warnings: Character Death, Dubious Consent, Graphic Descriptions of Violence, Non-Consensual Drug-Use, Drug Dealing, Drug Use, Dark Themes but despite that, it's very beautiful.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lapenserosa
Author Website: ArchiveofOurOwn

Author's Summary: Bait and Switch..
Spencer Reid is a young FBI profiler tasked with interviewing Christopher Keller, a Death Row inmate with many secrets and a very dangerous appetite.

Sequel's Summary.. The Restored Life
After the events of Bait and Switch, Reid on a college recruitment tour with David Rossi. During their last stop in San Francisco, CA, Reid meets an interesting stranger that seems genuinely interested in helping him heal from his interactions with Keller. Then when bodies of young men begin turning up in heavily toured areas the rest of the team flies out to San Francisco to help investigate and their discoveries could l just be all Reid needs to fully come undone.

Review:
While I had doubts about reading this fic after seeing the warnings, I decided to take a chance and read it. And while I regret reading it after bawling for a good hour, I loved it so very much. The author has managed to mesmerize and make something so dark be so beautiful.

It's an unconventional love story wherein you can't really decide if it's really a love story. But it's so beautiful. Lapenserosa manages to tell a story of the past, of the present and make it merge beautifully. Keller is wonderfully characterized, you see him as a hardened criminal with a difficult past but hints of a good man shines through. Spencer Reid is also in character, the endearing awkwardness he has that makes you love him. You see what could have been, what might have been and it's so painfully beautiful that you can't stop wondering what-if.

Best thing is, Lapenserosa has a sequel up, while still ongoing, is just one chapter to the end. Read it, you won't regret it. :)

Title: Building a Home
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid

Length: Long (~29,405 words)
Warnings: Fluffiness all around! <3

Author's Summary: Aaron and Jack move in with Spencer when renovations drive them out of their new house. Will it be a disaster…or a beginning?

Review: I finished this fic only a few moments ago since I am travelling and forgot to transfer my bookmarks. But still, I loved this fic.

What I loved most here is the beautifully written interactions between Jack and Spencer. The author has brilliantly shown the progression of Jack and Spencer's relationship, from skirting around each other to Spencer being Jack's other parent.

It's amazing how impulsiveanswer managed to use a common theme (Aaron's house is being renovated, Spencer asks them to move in) and make it into an extraordinary story. Jack, Spencer and Aaron are kept in character. The characters and the story itself is grounded and stayed true to its Criminal Minds roots while making it into a completely different story.

It was domestic fluff all around. <3 Much love to go around.

Title: Eternal Changes
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: N/A
Categories: action/adventure, angst, case file, drama, friendship. hurt/comfort, pre-canon
Length: Super!Epic (~168,281)
Warnings: blood, gore, murderers, UnSubs just about everything you typically see in a Criminal Minds Episode

Author on LJ: N/A
Author's Website: nebula2 @ ff.net

Author's Summary: "Jealous, Hudson?" "Of a wet-behind the ears kid who isn't technically old enough to be an agent? Not hardly. I give him a week before he quits." Dr. Spencer Reid is about to join the BAU, but not everyone is ready to accept him with open arms.

Review: I literally finished this fic just a few hours ago and I couldn't wait to recommend it to you guys. This fic is unique because rather than a retelling of a canon episode, it shows us what could have happened before the series started. It talks about how Reid joined the BAU right after graduation and first crime scene, how his interactions with his co-workers were then. In this story, the only faces we know from canon BAU team are Hotch, Gideon and Morgan.

Nebula has managed to wonderfully create a backstory for the canon series, we see Reid as an even more adorable geek that lacks people-sense. Nebula has managed to make Reid so natural while keeping a sense of his older persona. While I shouldn't be reading fanficton when it's finals week, I just couldn't help falling in love with the premise and managing to finish it in a few hours. :3

Title: The Consanguine Mind
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: N/A
Categories: action/adventure, angst, case file, dark, drama, family, friendship, hurt/comfort, mystery
Length: Epic (66, 281)
Warnings: At times, it feels so real like it's really happening, so better prepare a tissue or two. :)

Author on LJ: N/A
Author's Website: Pipsy at FF.net

Author's Summary: Repost. In an AU where Reid never joined the team, a case sends them to Nevada where his mother is a victim. As the team befriends him and the profile comes together, the UnSub and a dark secret is closer than they think. FINISHED! Previously 230 reviews.

Review: While I'd usually take much longer to review, I need to study for my exams. :) This fic is fantabulous. The Reid in this fic is not in the BAU instead, he lives in a small town where he runs a support group for people with missing loved ones in the hospital where his mother used to stay at.

I loved this fic because it took me on a thrill ride, I made the same mistakes and had the same assumptions as the BAU team. Pipsy wrote it so wonderfully, no plot holes to be found, as if it were a real episode of Criminal Minds. Her UnSub, his/her motive and his/her history was wonderfully thought out. If you love Criminal Minds, murder, mystery and mind-boggling motive, this fic is for you. :)
