Summary: In hindsight, Martin thinks it’s pretty funny that it wasn’t Sam’s gentle confrontation that reached him, nor Viv’s pointed concern, not even the lady at the Starbucks down the street from the FBI building who asked if he was okay when his hands wouldn’t stop shaking long enough for him to count out his change. In fact, all it took was Danny slipping a piece of paper into his hand after work one day with an address and a time and a promise: I’ll be there if you are.

Review: This is quite a short story and rather light on the actual slash side of things, but it does offer a perceptive insight into addiction and the courage required to overcome it. Martin has been abusing pills, and although his rational mind knows he needs help he has yet to convince his subconscious which shies away from the whole idea - until Danny silently offers his support. It's the knowledge that Danny will be there beside him which gets Martin in through the door of the meeting, and the touch of Danny's hand which helps him to face his demons at last. And afterwards, when they share a cab home, there's the quiet promise of more to follow.

What appeals to me here is the understanding that although these guys are attracted to one another and are prepared to admit it, they are not looking at a moonlight-and-roses scenario - not least because they are both addictive personalities and that makes everything else in their lives just that bit more complicated. On the other hand, there is also the merest hint of a suggestion that they could become one another's drug of choice, and that therefore each could provide the solution to the other's problem. It isn't glib, thank goodness, but it's optimistic all the same.

This is a story in which not much happens, so if you're hoping for hot mansex I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed. However, it does offer valuable character insight and a gentle upbeat ending from a writer who obviously knows her subject and expresses herself both clearly and well, and - as [profile] that_1_incident shows us here - sometimes little things like that can be really important.

A River Bends by Neko (NC-17)

Title: A River Bends by Neko
Fandom: Without A Trace
Pairing: Danny/Martin
Categories: Romance, Angst
Length: Long - An arc of nineteen short stories totalling 37,500+ words
Warning: Author warns for 'sexual content'
Rating: NC-17

Author on LJ: this is love, this is porn
Website: nekosmuse. Click on 'fanfic' and 'Without A Trace' and scroll down the menu; the A River Bends series is listed separately.

Summary: He can almost taste the gunpowder.

Review: It wouldn’t be giving too much away about the plot of A River Bends to say that this is an example of the kind of story which starts off with sex and ends up with love. Danny is watching Martin at a firing range one day when he is overwhelmed with lust for him and before either one of them has time to work out what's happening they're having sex right there and then. Moreover, they go on to have sex in and around their workplace several more times throughout the first half of the story.

I need to be honest here and say that in my opinion this indiscretion is the least satisfactory aspect of the story. I can just about buy them getting it on at work once, but they are both sensible adults and FBI agents into the bargain and that means that they should know the value of self-control. In this respect, A River Bends almost strays over the line into porno movie territory where everybody humps everybody anywhere they like and never considers the consequences.

Fortunately, however, at around the mid-way point the author and her characters see sense. Or, rather, sense is seen on their behalf. They have been caught on a security camera - as they should have expected, of course - and everybody in the building knows what they've been doing. They are suspended from duty, and Martin pulls strings with his father to make sure Danny isn't punished unduly - although, inevitably, they have to be separated.

The remainder of the story deals with how they cope with this development, and how it affects their feelings for one another. The sex is still mind-blowingly wonderful whenever they are together, but there is a good deal of angsting when they are apart. None of it is given very much context, and the remainder of the characters - Jack, Samantha, Vivian and Martin's father - only wander through long enough to make the occasional relevant remark.

I have a feeling this started out as one steamy hot sex story and grew a plot at a much later stage, and considering that it was published in 2004 it would be interesting to know if the author would take the same approach now. Nevertheless for all its flaws this is one of the classics of the fandom; it could have done with a little more character development and some indication that the guys had more in common than just the sex, but the conclusion is a satisfying one and the whole story arc will very well reward the attention of the reader.

Summary: In his mind, he's watched Danny die a thousand times.

Review: The storyline of this one couldn’t be a lot simpler. After a particularly difficult day the team go out together for a drink. There's no information to say whether this is based on a particular episode so I'm assuming not; internal evidence dates it somewhere in series three, between the start of Martin's relationship with Samantha and the arrival of Elena who is not mentioned in the story.

However by the time of this story Martin and Samantha are history and she and Jack are an item. Danny is concerned; he thinks Martin's still brooding about his lost love, and is worried that he's drinking too much - and Danny, knowing something about addiction, is concerned to warn him off.

Martin, of course, has a whole other agenda. He's had feelings for Danny for as long as they've known each other, and watching his partner come close to death yet again in the line of duty has eroded his self-control well past any limits it might have had. When the evening breaks up and Danny drives Martin home, Martin invites him in - but Danny declines. That should be the end of it, of course, but Danny gets half-way home and changes his mind, returning to surprise Martin - and I'm sure we all know what happens next.

This is by no means a great story - it's written in the present tense, which I'm not especially keen on - and it has one or two other small flaws, but it's atmospheric and captures Martin's somewhat elliptical personality nicely. It also demonstrates how perfectly suited to one another he and Danny are; in the revolving door of relationships afflicting that particular department, this is the only one which ever really had a chance of working.

This is good, solid, in-character fiction which does exactly what it sets out to do, gets the guys together but makes them suffer along the way. You really can't say any fairer than that.

Summary: A gentle tale of how it could've happened.

Review: A post-series fix-it for anyone who didn't like the Danny/Elena dynamic which emerged towards the end of Without A Trace. It's approximately a year after the final episode, and Danny and Martin are still working together - with Elena long gone - when they witness a horrendous traffic accident. Becoming caught up in the aftermath of it reminds them both of their own mortality, and what is precious in their lives.

The demise of the WOAT slash fiction archive at the end of 2009 left a huge gap in the world as far as Danny/Martin fiction is concerned, but the fandom is gradually beginning to re-establish itself in a variety of locations on the Web. (See this page on delicious for example.) [personal profile] veronicaluv is among several well-known authors in the genre whose work has recently become available again - and not just her archived stories, but new stuff too. A Place To Be is hot off the presses, posted on 31 January 2010, and I for one hope that it's a sign of things to come. I choose to see it as a reassurance that this battered fandom is alive and well.

This is a nicely-crafted, unassuming little story of how the boys might get together at the end of a particularly rough day and after an exceedingly difficult couple of years; there is some delightful domestic detail - some charming stuff with mobile phones - and Danny wearing nothing but a green bath towel, which has to be good, right? It's low-key and sweet and somehow just rings true; this is exactly how it could have happened, and exactly how I wish it had.
