Summary: Lassiter is alarmed at finding himself attracted to Spencer following the Drimmer incident. He visits a friend in San Francisco, looking for advice, but Spencer has tailed him. Lust overtakes them in the gayest city in the world, but can their relationship survive returning to Santa Barbara?

Review: Another media rec, this time hailing from the recent Amplificathon podfic spree on Dreamwidth. But kind of a fic rec as well!

I didn't and still haven't had chance to listen to much from Amplificathon, which produced new podfic at a truly scary rate, but I was drawn to this podfic by the bright cover and the promise of a Paul Simon soundtrack, even though it isn't a ship I normally go for.

This is such an exuberant reading I couldn't stop listening, and it absolutely brings the story to life. The recording quality is about as polished as I've heard podfic, and I love the usage of Paul Simon's Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall for the soundtrack, and the echo to distinguish thoughts is nicely done, making it easy to follow in an audio format. The whole production seems to bounce along with the lighthearted spirit of the show and the ever-present slight inanity of the two main characters.

Summary:

The bad news is that one of Lassiter's highest profile arrests has just escaped from prison. The worse news is that his best hope of tracking him down is a sleep-deprived Shawn Spencer.

Review:

It's not every day that someone writes a thoroughly plotted out case file fic, and even more rarely does the mystery fit with the tone of the canon so well you're left wondering, 'Why isn't this an actual episode?'

The Dah-Ling Store-It-Yourself is an intricately plotted adventure that unfolds perfectly, with just the right amount of information laid out for the reader to follow along, and enough deeply embedded clues that, when certain conclusions are revealed at the very end, it's obvious to the reader that they weren't drawn from thin air. That isn't to say that there aren't certain improbable things, but nothing that falls beyond the realm of Psych's general outlandishness.

The characters introduced for the mystery are generally quirky and layered with complexity, even the ones the reader never meets face to face. Cyril Riner, Shawn's kidnapper-slash-client, is particularly endearing and quickly earns the reader's trust in spite of most of the cast's determined belief that he's guilty of murder.

Fascinatingly, there's a palpable sense of frustration amongst many of the cast directed squarely at Shawn for his recklessness and obstinate refusal to give lip service to even the idea of working cooperatively with the SBPD. This fic shows Shawn at his finest but also does not flinch from showing him at his most selfish. In fact the only major gripe I have with this fic is that Shawn is so stubbornly focused on getting what he wants that it becomes an almost deliberate blindness to any potential negative consequences. And when the opportunity arises for Shawn to see those very real consequences, the nixajane lets it pass on by. In the end, Shawn gets what he wants and everyone else gets to bow to his whims.

I haven't read the other stories in The Dah-Ling Series yet, but I definitely will. Spoiled boy getting his way aside, I wouldn't miss another of nixajane's Psych case file fics for the world.

Summary:
The BAU is called out to Santa Barbara on a case where Spencer Reid meets Shawn Spencer. Shawn helps put some things in perspective.

Review:
This story is a nice, enjoyable read. There is a case involved but, for me, it largely serves as a backdrop for Spencer and Spencer’s interactions and isn't the focal point of the story. Every time I read this story I find myself wanting a spinoff featuring Spencer and Spencer and Gus running Psych together and consulting on cases at the SBPD because of the dynamic between the two Spencers and the way they interact with one another.

So many Hotch/Reid fics are understandably dark that I appreciate this story even more just for its lightheartedness. The pining between Hotch and Reid and the constant furtive looks are sweet and charmingly innocent, reminiscent of a first love.

The only quibble I have with this story is that while overall the CM characters are well represented I feel that the Psych characters are pushed more to the sidelines, especially since a majority of the story takes place at the SBPD. However the times Gus is on the scene, I can literally hear the lines he’s saying because they sound as if they’re taken directly from the show itself.

I read the first two sentences of this story and just knew this was an author who really got Lassiter. The matter of fact manner and crispness of the words in those first sentences sold me on this fic and it just got better from there. This story deals with the aftermath of a Lassiter who snaps when pushed just a little too far by Shawn during an intense case. It’s understandable and in character and wonderful.

This story has that great sly humor reminiscent of the show itself. Though the fic focuses on Lassiter and Shawn we do get a great Shawn and Gus moment that is so in character and hilarious. Beginning to end this fic is fabulous and a joy to read.

Review: The Leverage Team takes a job in Santa Barbara and of course Shawn Spencer gets drawn in. He and Eliot get closer too each other, but then Eliot has to skip town when the job goes south. When Shawn disappears from Santa Barbara, Eliot is pulled out of hiding.

This is a fast-paced crossover, capturing both the humor and the action of Leverage and Psych. Throw in a more or less unexpected dash of Stargate and you've got a long read full of adventure and relationships and character-building that is thoroughly enjoyable.

Review:
A superb writer, Insane Troll Logic deftly weaves the light and airy essence of Psych into the dark and grim canon of Supernatural. Shawn is one of the demon-touched babies, and gets abducted with the others when the demon plays his twisted games.

There are so many lines I giggled out loud to, including Shawn's reaction to meeting the other psychic kids: He claps his hands together. “Dude, we’ve all got superpowers! We can form the ultimate crime fighting team! I totally call costume design!” Who else but Shawn would say this? Throughout, his meta-commentary about the situations and characters are pithy and hilarious.

The author takes both shows seriously and it's a pleasure to see the canons meshed in a convincing manner.
