Dead Lover by Author (R)

Well, this is my last rec as a full-time reccer, at least for the next while as RL gets unbearably hectic. Hopefully I'll be able to post a guest rec once ever so often, but I still feel strange to leave ER because it's been my biggest fandom "thing" for the last couple of years and it's where I meet like-minded readers. I know ER hasn't done much regarding the results of the last reader survey, but please don't give up on us; we've been dealing with some major administrative changes and readers' suggestions will be tested/implemented in the near future.

And now without further delay, a fic from my favourite genre: ZOMBIES!!!

Title: Dead Lover
Fandom: The IT Crowd
Pairing: Richard Ayoade/Chris O'Dowd
Categories: action/adventure, hurt/comfort, supernatural
Length: long (~24,000)
Warnings: violence, gore, character death (not the main pairing), zombies!

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] darkplace606
Website: n/a

Author's Summary: Eight British survivors of Europe's deadly zombie virus Decay attempt a cross country journey through America in an attempt to reach zombie-free California. Rural America, however, isn't very safe.

Review:
I was completely freaked out by this story. If you’ve been reading this comm for awhile, you understand the severity of this statement. If you are new here, well, consider this a serious warning.

While I wouldn’t say the main plot of Dead Lover was exceptionally original, the emotions of individual characters as well as their interactions with each other were very well played out. The whole “Dead Lover” aspect of the zombie disease also added much creepiness. Thank goodness for the happy ending, although it only comes after many deaths.

One of my favourite zombie fics -- thank you, [livejournal.com profile] lovelyhera, for rec’ing this for my birthday! Highly recommended!

Dead Lover
Title: Make The Devil Feel Surprise
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: John/Rodney
Categories: action, angst, AU, drama, romance
Length: epic (48,000)
Warnings: This is a mirror AU and therefore, the characters are dark and angry and, in some cases, more than a little psycho. There is also sex between a minor and an adult, as well as some consent issues and BDSM elements.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] telesilla
Website: Chez Rozilla

Author's Summary: In a dark mirror universe of our own, sixteen year old Rodney McKay is brought to Atlantis by the Chief Science Officer, his older sister Jeannie, after their parents die. While Jeannie has no real use for Rodney, Colonel Sheppard does. Now Rodney has to come to terms with the fact that not only is he Sheppard's boy toy, but also that Sheppard is a moody, paranoid sadist.

For his part, John isn't quite sure what to make of Rodney, who is an almost too perfect match for him. Just as he and Rodney carefully start to settle into a complicated relationship, a conspiracy begins to surface, forcing Rodney to take a stand.

Review:
I have always wanted to read a good, satisfying mirror-‘verse story in the SGA fandom and this fic is my dream come true.

While John and Rodney in this universe are decidedly different from their canon counterparts, I believe the author was able to capture the essence of these characters and presented them as close to canon as possible given their circumstances. I was willing to overlook the warnings because I very quickly found out Sheppard is not really a “moody, paranoid sadist”. He’s still the same Sheppard who cares deeply about people close to him and believes in doing the “right thing”, albeit with mirror ‘verse standards. AU!Rodney is annoying at times but so is he in canon. My only concern with the story is Jeannie’s characterization. I may even go as far as saying she’s evil, but perhaps she, like all others in that universe, is simply a product of her upbringing and the society she’s in.

The verdict: highly recommended for those who appreciate dark mirror-‘verse stories but still want a happy ending.

Title: The Difference Engine
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John/Rodney
Categories: AU,
Length: long
Warnings: canon character deaths

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge
Website: Sam's Publishing Page

Author's Summary: Sheppard remembered dying in Afghanistan, but since he was still walking around he didn't pay that memory too much mind.

Review:
On one hand, other than the fact that Sheppard now had a machine (which Rodney built!) for his brain, everything pretty much stays the same as canon. On the other hand, that changes everything.

This is an incredibly well-written robot!John story with great characterization of the main and supporting characters. The writing is a on the minimalistic yet effective side; some characters may only a few lines but you will like remember them for a long time. The scientific premise of this story is somewhat iffy, but some of the analogies are very interesting, such as compiling data is like dreaming, dumping memory buffer is like sleeping, and writing new basecodes is like forming original ideas – all worth some sort of further discussion, even if it’s only on a purely philosophical level. Robot!John is so very human-like, although he seems to lack some of the most common basic human instincts. Maybe there isn’t a so called ‘norm’ for the average human being and we are all ‘flawed’ in one way or another.

An interesting and thought-provoking read!

Title: There are No Innocent Vampires
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Scorpius

Length: long (30,000)
Warnings: violence, bloodplay, dubcon

Author's Summary: Scorpius was the best of Auror Potter's new recruits, but a summer evening spent celebrating the end of training with friends around a magical fire in the woods changed Scorpius' destiny. Now Harry must fight Ministry protocol, Malfoy family secrets, and the carnal claims of a Dark creature in order to learn who he can trust – and who wants Scorpius dead.

Review:
After surviving a brutal attack by a group of Baobhan Sith while enjoying a beautiful summer evening in the Scottish Highlands, Scorpius is afflicted with their rare form vampirism. Harry wants to save Scorpius’ life, but he’s not sure who he can trust to be on his side.

One of the reasons I enjoy Romaine’s work so much is her talent for weaving intricate details of folklores, from research and from her own creation, into her stories as evident in her other novel-length work Survival of the Species (rec’ed here). The main romantic plot itself was almost secondary to me because I was completely captivated by the background vampire stories and really hope maybe someday an actual story about the vampire hunter’s parents will be written. For people who are not into that sort of thing, there is also an interesting plot, a mystery to be unveiled, and a lovely happy ending to boot.
