Title: Surrender
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Pairing: Sephiroth/Cloud Strife
Categories: vampire, mind control, AU
Length: Medium [3303 words]
Warnings: dub-con and a hint that Cloud is probably underage

Author on LJ: n/a
Author/Artist/Creator Website: AsreonInfusion'S AO3

Summary: Cloud is forced to spend the night in the long-abandoned ShinRa mansion, but he's not as alone as he would like to think.

Review: This is an AU one-shot and it uses the spooky setting of the original Shinra mansion to great effect to tell a classic vampire story, that - with all the things that happen to poor Cloud in the original game - play on some of the game's themes to great effect. There are nice callbacks to Sephiroth's history as we know it and to the influence that JENOVA allowed him over Cloud in the game, bleeding into the classic power of enthralling a vampire can hold over his victim.

It is a dark, sexy story and with the mind control is definitely not for readers who like clearly negotiated consent. But that goes well with the eerie setting and the overtones of classic horror.

Warnings: unhappy endings, character death (file under "Wishverse")

Summary: There's a big daddy vampire out of Missouri who used to keep alligators as pets. There's a Slayer. And there's Faith.

Review: You have a crossbow strapped to your back under your jacket, you have three twenty-dollar bills and a bus ticket in your pocket, and this could be your last day on earth.

Or not. Either way, it's nobody's damn business but yours and your victims'.

Last week, I wanted to rec something with badass women and couldn't bring anything to mind that hit the note I was looking for. A few days later someone on my friends list was good enough to re-rec this story from years back with a new AO3 link... and talk about stories that stick in your mind for years...

It's the Wishverse in the dying days before Buffy's trip to Sunnydale, and Buffy and Faith in St Louis, a tale of cults and vampires, alligators and mass sacrifices, bathed in religious imagery and blood and heat, and you know it's not going to end well but the journey down is so captivating you can't look away.

This fic. The structure, the language, the weight of the metaphor and imagery, this fic is a thing of beauty. I can't think of much else I've seen told with the same intensity, and I've never seen a second person narrative work much better than in this.

Title: Until My Dying Breath
Fandom: Glee
Pairing: Kurt/Blaine
Categories: AU, future, angst, drama, romance, supernatural elements
Length: Super Epic (140,000 words)
Warnings: Violence, grotesque descriptions, dark setting, fear, minor past character death, vampirism.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] emilianadarling
Author Websites: emilianadarling on tumblr, EmilianaDarling on AO3

Author's Summary: On his way home from campus to his apartment on the Upper East Side, Blaine Anderson happens to come across a beautiful young man with bewitching blue eyes. It doesn't take long, though, for everything Blaine thought was real to fall to pieces. For his world to dissolve into a twisted dance of fear and heat and blood.

Review: Kurt is a dark, sexy vampire, Blaine is a helpless college student -- could it work any better? This story is as gripping and scary as it is weirdly hot, and it certainly fits this week's dark theme.

As in everything she writes, Emiliana handles the pace of the story admirably: the slow burn up to the breaking point, the terror and excitement of what follows, and a very well performed ending. It's always very refreshing to read something written by someone with a true knack for storytelling, and fortunately, that's what we have here.

Despite the violence and fear and, well, vampirism, the true heart of the story lies in the development in Kurt and Blaine's relationship. From flirty to stalking to terrified to strangely caring, every emotion is pulled right into our throats alongside our beating hearts as we watch the characters move around each other. Kurt is dark, brooding, predatory and downright scary; Blaine is just the right balance of resourceful and vulnerable. Together, they're can't-close-the-tab (as opposed to can't-put-the-book-down) brilliant.

The flow of language and plot will keep you absolutely riveted to this creepy, nocturnal romance. Go read it. But just remember to keep an ear open for any strange scratching at the door whilst you do!

Categories: Dark, Horror, Supernatural, Vampire

Author on LJ: [personal profile] mirabella

Author's Summary:
There's a monster in Arthur's basement. Maybe he shouldn't have invited it in.

Review:
Honestly, I would count this more creepy than straight up horror, but your mileage may vary. But it is rather dark, which is something I apparently adore (as long as I get the requisite feeeeelings along with flying severed heads--I don't even know anymore). I do have to say this: the character death isn't really? But I figured since technically death occurs, well.

But, more seriously, this is a great fic. It's atmospheric and creepy, and yet there's Eames and Arthur who manage to make me crack a grin even under the fingernails-down-one's-spine feeling. It does get a little gory in a couple of parts, but even with a severed head I don't feel as if it goes overboard. The gore adds to the atmosphere, it doesn't overpower it, which is a plus.

Most of it focuses on Arthur and Eames's relationship, with Arthur trying to deal with the fact that Eames is a monster. A very charming monster, but a monster nonetheless. Then there's the sense of inevitability, that Arthur really doesn't have much of a choice in what will happen, and the ending had me torn between 'oh no' and 'yes please'.

A great read with just the right amount of spookiness without going overboard.

Title: Dead of Knight
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Categories: Modern Magic AU, Vampires, Supernatural, Crime Drama
Length: Epic (43,212 words)
Warnings: Violence, Minor Character Death, Crime Scenes

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] castmeaway
Author Website: jsea

Author's Summary:
Merlin Emrys, supernatural expert and consultant for the local police, knows that going to the opening night of a vampire bar isn't a good idea, not with anti-vampire sentiments running rampant. So when he draws the eye of the bar's charismatic owner, and the new Master of the City, Arthur Pendragon, he's not exactly pleased.
When a series of murders, seemingly the work of vampires, forces them to work together anyway, Merlin unwittingly finds himself falling in love. Suddenly, the lines between work and love are not as cut and dry as they seem.

Review:
Fans of vampire-themed stories have a plethora of interesting and well-written fics to choose from in the Merlin fandom. Of all that I've read, Dead of Knight is one of my favorites. It features strong characterizations, both of Arthur and Merlin, as well as the supporting cast, and excellent world-building.

As the author mentions, it's apparent that she drew inspiration from Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series, as well as the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, but it never feels derivative. The author blends these elements with BBC's Merlin to create a modern magic/vampire AU that serves as a really interesting setting for the story, which is part romance, and part mystery/crime drama.

The author's interpretation of Arthur as a vampire feels very spot-on; he's a chivalric medieval knight in the modern era with just a shade of darkness that makes him believable as a vampire without compromising his innate nobility and goodness. I really liked Merlin in this story too -- although he holds a degree in Supernatural Studies and a doctorate in Forensic Pathology, his dislike of the crime scenes at which he consults shows a more vulnerable side despite his expertise. The friendships he has with Gaius and Will are obviously very important to him, and lend authenticity to his characterization as well.

The romance between Arthur and Merlin is well-developed and very engaging. Merlin is understandably wary about getting involved with a vampire, not only because of the perceived risks associated with such a relationship, but because of the necessity to keep his magic secret. It's obvious that there is a connection between them from the moment of their first meeting, and Arthur pursues Merlin with an intensity that is both very in-character for this interpretation of Arthur, and also hows just how strongly he desires him. For his part, it's clear that Merlin has feelings for Arthur as well, but he has a bit more to overcome before he can accept it, which is also very in-character for this Merlin.

This story ticks all the boxes on the checklist for a great vampire story without ever feeling formulaic or trite, and is highly recommended.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jaye_voy

Summary: After centuries of waiting, a vampire returns to seek his revenge.

Review:
I said it once and I'll say it again. I love vampire fiction and especially when it's as well thought out and executed as this story. Again a very well developed universe that gives us a glimpse at vampire society and how it came about.

Jaye is a big fan of Karl Urban and as such has written fanfiction in fandoms like Lord of the Rings, Pathfinder, Star Trek, Chronicles of Riddick, Hercules, Comanche Moon, The Bourne Supremacy and RPS. I love her style of writing and she manages to portray her characters so perfectly that you can't help but fall in love with everyone of them, no matter if they are lead or supporting.

First Blood tells a tale about betrayal, revenge, hope and in the end of love. It has a semi happy end and if you are ever the optimistic dreamer, like me, you will decide that it will in fact end happily in the long run.

I absolutely love vampire fics and the Claimed series by azewewish and idiosyncratic is the perfect example of why I love them. There is vampire society, interaction rules and norms with humans, vampire politics and most of all we get to see what it's like for vampires to live forever. It can be rather difficult for some.

I don't know how long the Claimed series is, but with 5 sub series which have ten to sity parts, this story is something that will take quite a while to read but you won't get bored for a minute.

If you are interested in pairs, triplets and quartets of gorgeous guys, pervy Viggo Mortensen, sassy Dominic Monaghan and a series that spans over 850 years you'll find everything you could possibly wish for.
