Summary: If it ain't broke, fix it anyway.

Review: It's the anniversary of Steve's father's death, and he's still living in the house where it happened. Danny thinks it's time for a change and drags a reluctant Steve along. Danny is so good with handling a Steve who is still mourning, and this fic really reminds you why these two work together so well, both as professioanl partners and more. Steve and Danny bicker as they always do, which makes this fic a great mix of humor and angst. I love that everyone knows about Steve and Danny before Steve and Danny do. It's just an entertaining read, the kind of fic that catches you quick and is fun and interesting enough to keep you until you're done.

Author's Summary:
Groundhog Day AU. Danny finds himself trapped in the same day over and over again.

Review: This was one of the first fics I read in the fandom. I really love Groundhog Day AU's, and this is a fine example of that. I love how Danny changes each day, taking advantage of what he learned the loop before to try and make things better the next trip around. For himself and for his friends. The solution for ending the time loop makes me laugh, because of course. Ember's writing style is easy to read and the story moves along briskly. This fic reminds me why I'm so fond of all these characters.

Author's Summary:
Cosa Nostra: (kō'sə nō'strə) etym: Italian n. The branch of the Mafia operating in the United States. Literally, "our thing" or "this thing of ours."

Review:
In this AU Danny is a mafia boss who moves from Jersey to Hawaii to be with Grace, his activities watched with interest by the 5-0 team. A Steve determined to get Danny out of Hawaii is instead caught up in his charm offensive, and their relationship develops with Steve merely along for the ride, swept along by Danny's charisma. Though this is a mafia AU I definitely wouldn't describe it as angsty; it could even be called fluff. There's no question that Danny is involved in illegal activities that you would expect from the mafia, but his charm and laid back attitude see Steve falling in love against his better judgement.

I love the dark humour in this fic; for example Danny and Rachel talking amiably about that time she put a hit on him, and Danny's blasé attitude towards the violent reality of his lifestlye. You can't help but get caught up by Danny's sheer likeability, just like Steve, forgiving him any immorality. If you're looking for a serious and realistic mafia fic this is not the one to read. But if you're a fan of dark humour and characters with shades of grey, this is the perfect fic.

Summary: He’ll get used to it - he gets used to everything. But he’s only got five days before he’s back to Africa and it feels worthless, almost. Fucking mission, fucking Basher for getting caught out. Now he’s here, wandering the streets with nowhere to go and no one to see, because he can’t go home and he can’t tell anyone he’s here.
That AU in which Steve is an active Navy SEAL and Danny is in New Jersey, owning a gym.

Review:
Months and Miles from Dreams is by far one of my favourite H50 stories. It takes a very interesting and realistic glimpse at a situation where Steve and Danny meet before 2010 under very different circumstances. Steve is still in active service and Danny never became a cop, or married Rachel.

They are two lonely men who find company in each other, much to their surprise. Steve is emotionally stunted and doesn't communicate, Danny is hot headed and rants. Even though the setting is unlike the one of the first season, the two of them manage to find love and happiness.

Summary: Danny has a secret.
Review: Why does it always have to be wolves or big cats? Joe Lawson who wrote merman Danny in the amazing Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, returned to the genre of sea based supernatural creatures and turned Danny in this story into some kind of were shark. And not simply any old shark but old blood that dates back to prehistoric times. Yes, you guessed correctly, that means monster sharks.

The story starts with the very probable premiss of Steve pushing Danny out of a chopper to escape some bad guys. I particularly enjoyed Steve's reaction to shark Danny and the slight change in Danny's thought process when he turns into his shark alter ego.

If you enjoyed the merman story, you'll either already know this one, or you will enjoy reading some more cracky au from the pen of Joe Lawson

Summary:
Q: Is he a surfing slacker or decorated navy SEAL?
A: Try both.

What is it about extreme surfer Steve "Smooth Dog" McGarrett? Ambitious documentarian Danny Williams has filmed risk-taking sports enthusiasts before, but he's never made a private tape of one of these bad boys…. And it turns out the daring, hot movie version's got nothing on the real thing!

But Danny's X-treme documentary is turning into an X-asperating docudrama, since McGarrett won't sign the release form. No paper from McGarrett, no big break for Danny. McGarrett wants to help the fiery little number behind the lens, but he can't because his secret life as a navy SEAL has him deep undercover. Yet as Danny stumbles into the line of fire, all bets are quickly off. Steve's risking everything to save Danny. But will it be enough?

Review:
I love the McGarrett/Danny Williams banter in canon and I love it even more when a writer manages to capture that tone and snark in their stories as well.

In this story Danny is not a police man but he did follow Rachel to the islands to be closer to his daughter. It's interesting to see a different approach on how Steve and Danny might have met, considering the different career choice Danny made. Even though they are not forced into car chases, shoot outs and arrests every day, the banter and the snark is still the same.

The real challenge with AUs where the characters are not what and who they are in canon is that many times the author doesn't manage to capture the personality of the character or they completely dismiss any and all canon characteristics. Hoʻokoʻikoʻi pua ahi ʻole manages to avoid any such mistakes and takes us on an entertaining and thrilling "What if".

Review:
In a world where Sentinels serve the military and Guides are chattel, Steve is an unbonded Sentinel and Danny an unwilling Guide.

Initially I had planned on waiting until the series this fic started was finished before reccing it in its entirety but, to tell the truth, I think this story stands perfectly fine on its own. Beginning pre-canon with a completely different set of rules governing their lives, the Steve and Danny we meet in this fic aren’t necessarily the ones we know from the show. They’re different in a multitude of tiny ways, forced by their own circumstances to act in a way that might be considered out-of-character, but actually ends up helping them grow and develop into the men we know them to be.

One of the big things I liked about this fic is that Cattraine doesn't necessarily hold to 'The Sentinel' norm, with both the Sentinel and the Guide overjoyed to finally find one another. Instead, Steve is overjoyed and Danny is rebellious; completely terrified that his life is about to change in the most fundamental of ways. Which it does, but not in the ways he's thinking and that, in and of itself, is refreshing, especially after you've read the number of crossovers with ‘The Sentinel’ as I have.

All in all I'd say that this fic is an enjoyable read and worth giving a try if you’re looking for something different from canon.

When Steve went to get himself a cup of coffee, he was just trying to avoid doing paperwork for a minute or ten, not looking to change his whole life.

After the mad rush of the holidays and the exhausting transition back to what passes for normal in my life, I was truly delighted to stumble upon this series. Lighthearted and funny, the writing and characterization throughout it is equal parts grin-inducing and realistic to the show, with Steve and Danny playing off each other like the old married couple everyone keeps assuming they are. While I can’t claim this series will appeal to everyone – it might be a tad too fluffy for you die-hard angst fans – it is a great way to pass the time and warm the heart.
