Author's Summary: Tohru is delighted to live in the Souma mansion but quickly discovers the house is home to a tragic legacy. Can she rescue Yuki and Kyou from the family's dark past or will the curse claim another victim?
Review: Confession time: I am an incredible lightweight when it comes to horror and supernatural fic. If you're not into really scary fic but still want to get into the holiday mood, this is a good choice for your Halloween reading. I never would've thought that a supernatural AU could work for Fruits Basket, a series that seems to depend on the supernatural element that already exists in canon (the shapeshifting Zodiac members). Here, no one is cursed to change forms; the "curse" that the Souma mansion is under is of quite another type. In the modern day, Tohru, her friends, and the currently living Soumas struggle to solve the mystery of the mansion before the spirits bound to it manage to add to their numbers... they're not always successful, but the ending is triumphant.
The characterization Girlstarfish uses is perfect; even though the family relationships are not what they were in canon (the most notable deviation being the generational gaps between the Akito-era Soumas, the Shigure-era Soumas, and the modern remnants of the family), each character remains true to their personality, and fits well in the period of time in which they lived. Tohru herself is one of the highlights of the story; she's an excellent choice of narrator, as her optimism and simple view on life keeps the story from becoming too overwhelmingly tragic. (I won't spoil for you which characters are ghosts, but Tohru does have a knack for making friends with them, kind girl that she is.)
Finally, I appreciated that Girlstarfish didn't wrap up the love triangles neatly, but instead let the characters decide to figure out their romances slowly. Too many authors feel like every last plot point has to be tied up before they can finish the story, so this was a refreshing change of pace... and, in a way, very true to the spirit of the anime and early manga.

Review: What Ouran Academy really needed to become even crazier than it already was, were week-long visiting lecturers.
I'm a little leery about reccing the entire series, simply because I am only familiar with the first three crossover canons. Nevertheless, each chapter stands comfortably on its own, and I do recommend the first three chapters without reservation. To summarize:
Chapter One: Fruits Basket is such a shoujo series, that having it collide with Ouran (which may be shoujo but certainly spends more time parodying it than playing the tropes straight) was a stroke of genius. Shigure's interactions and musings about the Ouran students were delightfully in-character, as were their reactions to him. I particularly liked his attempts to bring out "Black Mori".
Chapter Two: Yuki as a willing guest lecturer is a harder sell, but his more cynical nature acts as the glass of cold water to the face that Ouran characters desperately need. Plus, it's at this point that a certain thematic repetition starts to become apparent. Namely, that the lecturers will a) determine that Haruhi is a girl, and b) be able to tell that the twins are faking their incestual relationship.
Chapter Three: Muraki should never have been allowed past the doorstep of a high school. The reader knows just what he's like, and there's a dark humor in seeing the Ouran students get creeped out while remaining ignorant of his crimes.
I am confident that the remaining two chapters are also comedy gold, and personally enjoyed reading them, but I can't be certain that the crossover characters are as in-character as the first three lecturers were. Then again, the series does not have an ongoing plot as such, and the first three chapters stand as a great medium-length story.

SMALL FANDOM WEEK, YAY! Even though nearly all of my fandoms are small...
Review: "Tohru finds something interesting in her locker one morning." An OMC wants to date Tohru, but can either Kyo or Yuki just stand by and let it happen?
This story was written after the anime finished, but way before the manga was complete. Merrow wrote the characters as they were at the time, and many of the character developments that occurred in canon are understandably not present. For the same reason, a few OCs appear in the form of Tohru's classmates, when a later-written story could have easily used identified characters. That said, this story is still marvelous in its handling of the characters' personalities. The characters grow in a different, but no less plausible direction than they do in the manga.
As for the main plot, our boys experience jealousy, anger and all the less-attractive emotions that go along with competitive romances, but there's hope, too. Tohru finds out what she wants, but it takes time and a lot of soul-searching. The OCs are well-written and make you wish that they existed in the canon, and the situations seem like they could have happened in the early manga volumes. The open-ended conclusion is classic Furuba, too.
I've been wanting to recommend Merrow, as she has written some of the best Furuba fic that I've seen, but unfortunately most of it is unfinished (she's an author who goes at a slow and steady pace). "A Mystery" is complete, and well worth your attention.
