Author's Summary:
Sanji has been in a coma for eleven months, but he's lost his memory of the past two years. Now, he doesn't remember Zoro, or the life the two of them had built together.

Review:
I'm generally not fond of amnesia fic, to be honest. I usually end up skipping to the end, where the person gets their memories back, and they have to deal with the fallout of what happened while they couldn't remember. But this fic, oh, this fic. When Sanji wakes up, he doesn't remember Zoro, doesn't remember falling in love with a man. It's so interesting to read as Sanji is discharged and tries to settle into a life he doesn't remember. I love his and Zoro's relationship, and Zoro's patience with him, even though it hurts that Sanji can't remember. I love how Sanji falls in love with Zoro all over again. I also enjoy how the entire fic isn't about Zoro and Sanji. Usopp and Kaya are having issues, and Chopper is going through a difficult time as well. I don't want to spoil anything :) They include so many characters from the manga, too, nearly everyone gets a role.

You can tell this was essentially copied and pasted from livejournal, since the author occasionally included the last couple paragraphs from the previous chapter in the next chapter, as a reminder of how things were left. Still, it's easily skipped over. The writing is simple but engaging, the plot is interesting, and the characters are so fun.

Author's Summary:  Born as two, destined to be one. There's more to Mr. Prince than meets the eye, and if they catch him, all his dreams will die.

Review:  I thought this story was a neat way of creating a character's backstory so that it handily explains small details that cropped up in canon.  Since that was about as clear as mud, let me try to explain again: in this story, Sanji gets a family and a creepy childhood, and the fundamental morality of his character is set in stone by a tragic event shortly before Sanji runs away from home.  Unfortunately for the chef of the Straw Hats, that childhood is coming home to roost, as a family member is tracking him down.  I would hate to spoil the plot twists by being any more specific - as it is, the (necessary) warnings give away a great deal about the nature of his home island's culture.  Kinda makes his position as a chef more interesting though, yes? And it casts a new light on his marooning with Zeff (spoiler for the unaware: Zeff was forced to eat his own leg, when their rations started to run out, as he gave the remaining rations to young Sanji rather than let Sanji starve).

As I said, I really liked the small details that were incorporated into the fic.  Why Sanji used the fake name of "Mr. Prince", why he never pulls his hair back from one side of his face, and even, obliquely, why he can't hurt women... all these aspects of the canon characterization are explained in a way that I found to be plausible and One Piece canon-compliant.  Do bear in mind that the story dates to 2006, so any more recent events and characters will obviously not be included.

Summary:  A decade before the main action of One Piece: when a pirate chef meets a Marine, a bad hilarious time is had by all.

Review:  This story is a fun take on an unlikely slash pairing... a pairing that would never have occurred to me, but which the author makes surprisingly plausible (and hot).  Chibi-Trillian does a great job fleshing out the characters and keeping their behavior within the One Piece tradition of zany-ness.  It's a good story to read at any point after you have "met" both characters in canon, as it is set before the canon storyarcs begin, and does not spoil any of the future events.

Title:  Up on the Peak
Fandom:  One Piece
Pairing:  a bit of Zoro/Kaku

Warnings:  some violence

Author on LJ[livejournal.com profile] maldoror_gw

Author's Summary:  A year after Enies Lobby, Kaku catches up with Roronoa Zoro for a rematch; a battle featuring swords, reasons to fight, a sprinkling of odd emotions and, of course, giraffes.

Review:  This fic was written right after the Enies Lobby arc, so it has none of the newer characters, and it guesses at the fates of others.  If you're willing to look past those aspects of "Up on the Peak", you'll be rewarded with an interesting story that gives one of the members of CP9 a second chance.  Kaku was always one of, if not the most, sympathetic characters of CP9, and so Maldoror doesn't have to stretch his character at all to arrange a scenario in which he would be welcomed as a new crewmate of the Strawhats.

I particularly like the mix of humor and action in this story, which is typical of Maldoror's style at the time but which does suit the canon of One Piece rather well.  I also re-read "Up on the Peak" for its unusual pairing, a slowly-building, not-quite-there-yet Zoro/Kaku.  I was convinced by Maldoror to give more Zoro/Kaku fics a try; the characters have so much in common, and given a little time to discuss their differences of opinion, I can pretty much buy that their enmity would disappear.  You'd end up with two strong swordsmen who alternated between hot sex and sparring, which, well, yes.  Unfortunately for us, "Up on the Peak" leaves the two on the brink of such a relationship, but the stopping point works for the story, and we can satisfy ourselves with imagining what must have come next.

Author's Summary:  Sanji makes a mistake, and Zoro may be his only chance of surviving the consequences.

Review:  I am a wimp when it comes to characters being tortured, especially if the torture is particularly inhumane and continues past the point of endurance.  That said, I re-read this fic by X-Parrot periodically, because I've never read a better example of this plot - and praise be, there's a happy ending for nearly everyone.

The situation in the story is more complicated than I've suggested.  Sanji is caught inappropriately touching one of the priestesses on an isolated island, and to repent he is asked to endure seven symbolic "deaths".  Once he completes them, he can go, and the priestess is "cleansed" of his taint.  So far, so clear.  Except Sanji wasn't, for once, being a horndog, and the priestess isn't who - or what - you think she is.  The goddess the island serves isn't uninvolved, either, to the point that the deaths get very spooky, indeed - and while the deaths are not literal, Zoro (who is sticking by his man friend's side throughout this ordeal, since Sanji won't accept any other witnesses) finds out that no prior penitent has ever survived all seven.  The holy order doesn't even enjoy torturing the penitents, since they're more the peace-loving type of religious practitioners, and the custom strikes against their preferences.

The story understandably focuses on Sanji and Zoro, and their characters' development in the face of serious adversity.  I see the plot as comfortably pre-slash, since the two get to know each other so well that it makes an excellent foundation for a different kind of relationship, but I can see how it can stand as a simple and deep friendship instead.  The other Strawhats don't make much of an appearance, and it would probably be impossible to incorporate the crew into this tale, when the core of Zoro and Sanji's shared experience is that it is both intimate (in the, "I bind your wounds and ease your mind" sort of way) and a secret from the others, who would not, generally, be inclined to allow Sanji to finish the ritual if it meant he would likely die.  Zoro understands honor and promises - it's his basic driving principle, after all - and while he does his best to help Sanji survive, he isn't going to force Sanji to stop doing what Sanji thinks is right.  Seven Deaths is a gripping and tense read, and it's precisely because of this smooth and natural matching of plot to characterization, which X-Parrot pulls off splendidly.  The ending comes across as both a relief from the almost unbearable tension and a satisfactory reward for the characters' perseverance.
