Title: Jack Bristow at the Edge of Reason by Yahtzee
Fandom: Alias/Bridget Jones's Diary
Pairing: None really, but you could say one-sided Bridget/Jack
Categories: Crossover, humour, action/adventure, epistolary?
Length: Medium (~5000 words)
Warnings: One-sentence character death at the beginning

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63

Review:
After terrorists raid her office looking for a rare book, Bridget enters Jack Bristow's custody (and develops an unrequited, but hilarious, crush on him). Together they have to rescue Sydney from Sark's custody.

This story couldn't be more fun if it tried. The tone is a perfect imitation of the books, with the time of day, weight, cigarette counts, random observations, and just everything. Bridget's banter with an annoyed Jack is gold, but my favorite part is when she meets up with Sydney for some girly good times. The author's Bridget voice is perfect, but even more, the pacing (with fast-and-furious diary writing, as well as how the plot progresses) is ace.

Review:
Sark and a clueless Seth meet, flirt, and start casually sleeping together whenever Sark is in town. Things get complicated, however, when not only the CIA, but also his parents and friends, find out about Seth's fling.

I don't understand how anyone ever thought of putting these two together, but the writing is so amazing that I don't think it matters whether or not you buy the pairing. Seth's (3rd person) POV voice is hilarious and heartwarming---full of charming non-sequitors, pop-culture references, and adorable stream-of-consciousness self-awareness. The amazing characterization is extended to all characters, not just Seth, and there's a fantastic throwaway comment about Peter Gallagher's eyebrows, which will never not be funny. I'm mainly reccing the final installment, which opens as an established relationship/booty call, because it's much longer and more exciting than the other two, but the first ones are great, as well.

I have only ever seen one or two episodes of The OC, but I understood this perfectly; you only need to vaguely know who the main players are, no plotlines. And if you've never seen Alias, all you need to know is that Sark is a very young, very stylish, and very snarky international bad guy.

Review:
Shortly after Sydney disappears and while Sark is in CIA custody, Jack Bristow learns that Stephen Sark is his son. And you thought the Bristow family was disfunctional *before*...

Apparently lots of people in fandom were anticipating (or dreading, depending on the person) that Sark and Sydney would prove to be siblings. I, on the other hand, had never considered the possibility and wasn't quite sure what I thought about it. Fortunately I gave the fic a try anyway, because it is *fabulous*.

I like so many things about this story, from the way that it manages to stay close to canon, to the phenomenally well-done characterizations, to the very slow-moving acceptance of Sark into the Spy Family. This is not an insta-family fic and it is far the better for it.

My favorite aspect of the story, however, is the way that the revelation of Sark's parentage gradually impacts all of the Spy Family's internal relationships in a way that I wouldn't have anticipated, but which make total sense. The changes are so plausible (not to mention so very in character) that I didn't quite realize until the end how much the changes added up. The result is an ending that's guaranteed to make you smile.

The second of my girl power recs. Five of the best female characters in the last five years (Sydney Bristow, Starbuck, Buffy, Zoe, and Veronica Mars) demonstrate that you can be powerful and feminine at the same time. Not to mention hot. Damn, these are attractive women. And they certainly don't need a man to protect them. Hell, they'll be the ones protecting their man. And that's why we love them.
