Ambush by Alethia (PG)

My novella (aka The Big Gay Western Romance) is finally available (eeee!) and I finally (after months of working on it) managed to complete my assignment for the 1,000 reader celebration (yay!), which is good, because we only have sixteen more readers to go before we hit the big 1K (*hint hint*)

Best. Monday. Ever.

Thus I present you with happy fic.  Enjoy!

Title: Ambush by Alethia
Fandom: High School Musical
Pairing: Chad/Ryan pre-slash
Categories: humor, fluff
Length: Medium (~4,000 words)

Review:
Ryan is Not Gay. Not even a little bit. Completely, totally *not* *gay*. No matter how supportive Gabriella is, Ryan is just not gay. Really.

*cough*

This is a total piece of fluff -- Gabrielle is cutely determined, everyone else is trying to be supportive, Sharpay is traumatized by the fact Ryan was keeping this deep secret to himself, Ryan is horrified by the fact that absolutely no one is listening to him, and Chad is providing the gay porn. Whee!

While Ryan's histrionics and revenge plans are entertaining, Chad is the true star of the fic: snarky, shameless, and utterly awesome, he totally makes this fic work. And now I have a bit of a crush on him.

In the end you have a funny, fluffy, wonderfully appealing story that should entertain just about anyone, even if you aren't a fan of High School Musical.

Wildcats: Beginnings by queenitsy (PG-13)

Title: Wildcats: Beginnings.
Fandom: High School Musical.
Pairing: Troy/Gabriella, Chad/Taylor (some implied Zeke/Sharpay, Chad/Ryan)
Categories: AU, Action/Adventure, Angst, Romance.
Length: Epic.
Warnings: Off-screen character death (sort-of).

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] queenitsy /[livejournal.com profile] temira
Author Website: Queenitsy.com

Author's Summary:
The Wildcats will go down in history as one of the greatest teams of superheroes ever assembled: Captain Bolt, super strong, invulnerable, and accidentally prone to creating serious property damage; Strawberry Sugar, who uses her telepathic and telekenetic abilities to take down badguys and cheat at carnival games; Go, who's super-fast and looks super-good in spandex; +ayl0r, an AI, but with emphasis on the intelligence, thanks; and Frappe, who doesn't let a lack of superpower stop him from being a total badass, and who doesn't let being a total badass stop him from baking delicious cookies.

But how did these heroes get started, and how did they come together as a team? And what about Chiaro and Scuro, the twin super villains (or are they just misunderstood)? And why the hell does Captain Bolt turn orange in direct sunlight..?

It's a long story, to say the least.

Review:
I've been saving this rec for this specific theme week since it was first posted for the [livejournal.com profile] hsmbigbang because to me it exemplifies the perfect combination for an AU: an interesting premise followed by great characterization. One of the main problems I have with AUs is that while many create interesting new scenarios and backgrounds, many fail to keep the characters true to their original selves despite the changes. While some minor changes can and should happen, I really don't see the point of reading a fic where all that remains from the original characters are their names.

Queenistsy's take on the Wildcats as a group of superheroes is brilliant because despite their powers (or lack thereof) and different backstory, the characters are definitely recognizable. The fic is a typical “origins” story: who are these people and how did they decide to come together as a team? The first four chapters aim to answer the first question, while the last is dedicated to the main action plot and the eventual creation of the Wildcats. Far from dragging the fic on, the amount of back-story only endear the characters more to the reader and make their eventual team up much more interesting.

The author has said she might write more fics set in this 'verse in the furture. I for one look very much forward to that.

After the baseball game, Chad starts taking dancing lessons from Ryan. This leads to feelings developing between them (despite the fact that Chad would like to deny them at first). Of course, with them both being teenage boys, their relationship is sure to have some bumps along the way…

While looking across my fanfic bookmarks, I stumbled across this fic and have been wondering ever since: why haven’t I recced this before? It has absolutely everything that I love in a good HSM fic: great characterization and character interaction and a slow, believable buildup of Chad and Ryan’s relationship. As an extra bonus, it’s epic length (and there will be – hopefully – more parts added to it in the future). A wonderful, enjoyable series.

A slight warning: the series is divided into two major volumes, one set during the summer at Lava Springs and one set after senior year begins. The latest story of the second volume (entitled "Freaky Friday") has yet to be finished, but if you prefer not to read a WiP you can simply skip it without problem.

Review:
After the summer at Lava Springs, Chad has kept himself distanced from Troy and the rest of the team. Determined to find out what’s happening with his best friend, Troy follows him and discovers Chad’s involvement with theater and Ryan Evans.

I’m not usually a fan of Troy Bolton, but this story, told mostly from his point of view, really sold me the character. Yes, Troy’s still a bit of an idiot, but he is also a loyal friend and makes for a fantastic narrator, at times funny and endearing and surprisingly understanding and accepting when it matters most.

The play Chad and Ryan are involved with (the “Gemini” of the title), is interesting and surprisingly well developed for something created for a fic. Besides the wonderful play itself, I was quite impressed with how liadan managed to showcase so much of Chad and Ryan’s relationship while they’re playing completely different people. Original, well written and beautifully developed, this is the best Chad/Ryan fics I’ve seen in months.

Gemini.

Not A Second.
