Summary:
The first phone call, unsurprisingly, was from Anna, on the day the full page ad ran in Comic Collector's Monthly.

Review:
A short, sweet piece of shmoop set a short way in the future of The OC, written during season 2 so somewhat jossed. I don't care, though, because it's well written and never fails to bring a smile to my lips.

The idea is that Seth Cohen starts publishing his own comic. The central character is a crime-fighting superheroine who bears more than a slight resemblance to Summer, and her plucky side-kick, Adam, also bears more than a slight resemblance to Seth. Various other OC personalities appear in various guises, all fictionalised through the lens of Seth's prejudices. Marissa is particularly hard done by as the evil Ms Barton, but Seth would so I can hardly call it character bashing really.

The story progresses through a series of phone calls between Seth and various others; his parents gushing about his success, Ryan being encouraging and faintly embarassed ("Is Ben supposed to be me?"), Summer enthusing wildly, and so on. Eventually of course Seth puts enough of himself out there for everyone to figure out what he won't say outright, and the story ends with a classic rom-com scene.

And that's it, really. This isn't and doesn't pretend to be a huge and important piece of literature, but it is an entertaining and gentle read. It flows nicely, all the characterisation fits, and aside from one slightly unfortunate choice of names (Autumn Breeze, really?) it ticks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned.

When it comes to ‘five things’ fic, I’m sure it’s all been said, for the good and for the bad, and I won’t necessarily argue for one side or the other. What I will say in this case, however, is this is one of those fics that I re-read often if not just for the fact that each and every scenario given, no matter how outlandish, seems plausible. Whether it’s Connor being George Michael’s brother or a squib in a family of Weasleys, the author does a wonderful job of doing exactly what the title says: magically squeezing Connor into a place he shouldn’t be and making it work.

Review:
Sark and a clueless Seth meet, flirt, and start casually sleeping together whenever Sark is in town. Things get complicated, however, when not only the CIA, but also his parents and friends, find out about Seth's fling.

I don't understand how anyone ever thought of putting these two together, but the writing is so amazing that I don't think it matters whether or not you buy the pairing. Seth's (3rd person) POV voice is hilarious and heartwarming---full of charming non-sequitors, pop-culture references, and adorable stream-of-consciousness self-awareness. The amazing characterization is extended to all characters, not just Seth, and there's a fantastic throwaway comment about Peter Gallagher's eyebrows, which will never not be funny. I'm mainly reccing the final installment, which opens as an established relationship/booty call, because it's much longer and more exciting than the other two, but the first ones are great, as well.

I have only ever seen one or two episodes of The OC, but I understood this perfectly; you only need to vaguely know who the main players are, no plotlines. And if you've never seen Alias, all you need to know is that Sark is a very young, very stylish, and very snarky international bad guy.

Review:
An OC Christmas Chrismukkah Carol, with Ryan filling the Scrooge role.

I have to admit, the justification for Ryan's spiritual intervention is a bit flawed (it's hard to figure out how Ryan isolating himself will eventually lead to The End of The Cohen Family And Death Of All That OC Fans Hold Sacred) and there's some verb tense issues in the last part. Fortunately, the bulk of the story makes up for those two issues.

I'm a huge sucker for future!fic and Kevo does a fantastic job of writing a slightly depressing but tone perfect future for Ryan. The boy we knew and loved from the series is still in there, but he's been tempered and a little broken by adult life. Enter the ghost of Marissa (and I don't say this very often but Marissa might just be my favorite part of this fic) and the story takes a creepy but oddly sweet turn.

My favorite characters in this fic are the female ones -- Marissa, Summer, Kristen, and the first spirit (name withheld, since guessing who the spirits are going to be is one of the joys of this fic) are all flawlessly in character and are all utterly adorable. Ryan and Seth are not quite as perfect, but Kevo has a real gift for writing Seth Cohen dialogue.

In the end, this is a good choice for Christmas Carol fans, for fans of the women of The OC, or for OC fans who are eager to read longer stories than The OC fandom norm.

The time between S1 and S2, when Seth ran away from home and ended up in Portland with Luke and Luke's gay dad.

This fic is very much in the spirit of an OC episode -- you have Seth babbling, Luke filling in for Ryan as adopted brother/love interest, and lots and lots of parties (though less violence which, as Seth notes, probably has something to do with the lack of Ryan). I especially like Luke in this fic -- still mostly a dick, but with some of the human side we started to see by the end of season one. You also have plenty of teenage angst (RYAAAAAN) and just enough smut to keep things lively. A solid one-shot for fans of The OC.
