Title: Buffy vs Edward: Twilight Remixed
Fandom: Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Twilight
Pairing: gen
Categories: meta, crossover
Length: 6:03 minutes
Warnings: stalking, main character death

Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: rebelliouspixels on youtube, http://www.rebelliouspixels.com/ & http://blip.tv/rebelliouspixelscom

Author's Summary:
In this re-imagined narrative, Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's an example of transformative storytelling serving as a pro-feminist visual critique of Edward's character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy's eyes, some of the more sexist gender roles and patriarchal Hollywood themes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed - in hilarious ways. Ultimately this remix is about more than a decisive showdown between the slayer and the sparkly vampire. It also doubles as a metaphor for the ongoing battle between two opposing visions of gender roles in the 21ist century.

Review:
This vid is wonderful on so many levels. It's a great mash-up of two canons, showing how Buffy would react to Edward's "courtship" style. It's vampire slayer versus vampire, but it's also an empowered woman against a creepy guy. Go, Buffy, go! Further, it's a great example of a transformative work, showing how you can take video from various sources and create something new and meaningful.

This remix vid has been around since 2009, and has been discussed by many others far more cogently regarding both its excellent social commentary and how it's a great example of a transformative work under fair-use in copyright law. But beyond all that, it's a great vid. I admit I'm not a Twilight fan; Edward's romancing style of watching people while they sleep and following them around always creeped me out, and it's so fun to see Buffy commenting on it, being concerned, not putting up with it,
and finally taking care of business.

Review:
When Sam Winchester is sent to the rainy, cold, small town of Forks, he's fully prepared to be bored to death. That is, until he meets Dean Cullen. Fascinated, Sam can't bring himself to care that there's something “off” about the Cullen boy and, to make matters worse, Dean seems equally as fascinated with him (even if he does think there's a good chance he'll end Sam's life). There are a thousand reasons why a hunter and vampire should never be together, but whose listening?

When I first started reading this fic, I'll admit that it was purely for the crack – Sam and Dean in the Twilight universe? I have to read! – but two chapters later, I was well and truly hooked. Cas and Fetish do an excellent job of making this story both intriguing and distinct with Sam and Dean both staying firmly (okay, firm-ish) in character and not suddenly becoming a demented version of Bella and Edward. Better still was the fact that neither of the authors forgot about the Winchester family business or the Cullens dietary needs – John Winchester was still around, Sam was still a hunter, Alice Cullen was still a BFF-type, and things did get complicated.

Though this story might not be suited to all tastes, I highly enjoyed it. It was addicting, intriguing, and made me crave more stories like it. Lucky for us, both of these authors have written several other Supernatural/Twilight crossovers, which you can find through the link below.

Review:
There's something to be said for stories that live up to being exactly what you'll hope they'll be and this one, I'm delighted to say, did. Filled with humor, action, and a healthy dose of romance, 'First and Foremost' lives on its characterization. That is to say, the characterization is absolutely brilliant.

Though written in a very romance novel style (happy endings guaranteed), I found myself caught up in Chloe and Jacob's building relationship; waiting for everything to turn out all right and, in some cases, waiting for the other shoe to drop. This isn't a story all about a massive plot; this is a story about the characters, their love for one another, and how unexpected life can be for them. It also doesn't hurt that the peripheral cast (Lois, most especially) is equal parts humorous, pushy in a friendly way, and actually present and accounted for despite the easy out the author could have taken. Fans of romance should definitely take note of this author.

Review:
What would happen if Edward moved to Sunnydale instead of... that rainy place in the northwest, and ended up falling for Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Well, for one thing, Buffy won't stand for any of this stalking nonsense.

When I read Twilight (having been assured by everyone I knew that it was the best novel ever written), I found it vaguely creepy but I couldn't put my finger on why. This positively awesome vid helped me see what I'd been missing: Edward Cullen is a complete and total stalker.

Brilliantly blending both canons, dialogue and all, Jonathan creates a thought-provoking, fast-paced, and highly entertaining story that shows Edward interacting with a strong, confident woman who is fully capable of taking care of herself, even against a vampire. To me, this is something that everyone should see, if only because it makes you think more about the undertones of the fic you're reading. Personally, I think old-school romances (you know, the ones with romantic rape and controlling possessive men) are fine reading if you like them, but the reader should understand that when a woman is saying no (but her body is saying yes) that is rape, even if in this particular novel it's rape fantasy.

The same with Twilight. If you like the story, that's wonderful! But, still, it is an idealized form of stalking and that's something women should acknowledge and pass on to younger readers who may not yet understand that stalking, while potentially romantic in fiction, is equally likely to be dangerous (or even deadly) in real life.

For the author's explanation on how and why he made this remix (as well as some intriguing analysis of Bella and Edward), check out Jonathan's interview at WIMNonline.
