RR -- Jane's Favorite Things

  • Oct. 20th, 2008 at 9:12 AM

It's my birthday!  (Well, it was last Wednesday, at any rate.)  I've decided to celebrate by asking ya'll to rec some of my favorite things.  Here's a list:P

Harlequin, Marriage of Convenience, Amnesia, and/or Bonding fic: I recently read a Harlequin book for the first time in years, and I was surprised by the fact that I, well, hated it.  Yet I still love fanfic Harlequin.  I think the difference is that most romance novels (even these days) feature a nominally independent woman who is really desperate and lonely and can't seem to cope with life without a man.  (Look, there's one!  Grab him before he gets away!)  Fanfic Harlequin, on the other hand, usually features two (often male;) characters who are both getting something out of the situation and who have equal, if different, strengths and weaknesses.  Yum.

Small Fandoms: I love a whole slew of small fandoms and I'm always looking for more.  I'll be doubly grateful for Tin Man (Cain/Glitch) and 3:10 to Yuma (Ben/Dan) fic.  Yuma has been especially difficult for me, as every comm and personal LJ devoted to the show seems to be graphics and/or ad heavy, and they tend to crash my browser, so specific links to every single part would be very much appreciated.

New fic and/or fic only found at author's websites: I have most of the archives covered, but these days not everyone (or even the majority) post their fics at said archives, so I'm looking for any stories I might have missed in any of the fandoms I rec in, either because they're really new, they're on small and/or multi-fandom archives, or they're on the author's website.  Note that I pretty much never read multi-chapter stories on LJ (unless the story has been broken up strictly for length, rather than because the author likes post her stories as she writes), and single-file links are always preferable to the same story broken in chapters.

Thanks in advance for being such fabulous folks!

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

As an absolute devotee of slash, I'm flabbergasted to actually find myself reccing a het story. But it's so well-written that it actually got ME to read it, and it's a marriage of convenience, so hopefully you might enjoy it.

Pride and Prejudice: Overthrowing Such Schemes, by Ali

Let me know if the link doesn't work for you - it's the only working link I've found, but I saved the PDF and can pass it along.

Also, have you seen this rec page of arranged/forced marriages? It has some goodies, and is actually how I came across Ali's story:

I'm glad you've found my recs page useful! OSS isn't actually on that page (it's on the main P&P recs page) but it's a good story.

[livejournal.com profile] jane_elliot - I can't think of anything off-hand in those categories that I haven't already recced to you... in any case some of the things you asked for are not my type of fic at all. Sorry!

Have you ever considered asking for originalfic recs? Or does anyone know if there's a community out there which specialises in reccing it (not m/m specific)? I know there's good original fiction out there (I have a few bookmarked myself) but it's nowhere near as easy to find as fanfiction, sadly.

Lothy, thanks for making those great rec pages! All of you amazing rec-ing folks make me so happy! Sorry to have misquoted you - you're right that I found OSS on your P&P recs page (after I had read through your arranged marriage recs, I realized I should check out more in the P&P fandom, and found your other page!)
Thanks again!

Generally speaking, if I'm going to read original fic, it'll be published original fic (I tend to have higher standards for OF than I do for FF).

That said, we have (thanks to Mei) had an original fic RR. If you're interested, you can find it here: http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/51758.html

Enjoy!

The story by Ali requires a password, do you know it? Or can you pass along a copy of the fic?
