RR -- Epic McShep

  • Aug. 24th, 2007 at 8:48 AM
Going through my memories, I've noticed that SGA, which was supposed to be one of the major fandoms of this comm, has fewer recs than Smallville (*Smallville*!)  Worse, most of the SGA fics that are recced aren't even epic in length.  Unfortunately, the problem seems to lie in the fact that my pool of epic length SGA fics is very small, primarily because folks in SGA don't archive very often (not that I can say anything, as Proposition and Push/Pull *still* aren't archived, *sigh*).  What's more frustrating is the fact that I know there are epic length (250K+) SGA stories out there, I just can't find them.

Which is where you come in:)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Epic McShep

Previous Topics:
Genres:
-Marriage of Convenience
-Harleqin AUs
-Homeless!fic
-Humor
-Fluff

Fandoms:
-
Long Due South AUs
-Crime Procedurals (anyone posting Bones (Boothe/Bones) or Monk (Stottlemeyer/Disher) fic gets a rec in any fandom of their choice, even if I have to acquaint myself with the fandom first)
-Due South fic (F/V would be a bonus, as I haven't read any before)
-
The Sentinel

Do SGA recs have to be McShep?

Technically they don't *have* to be, but I'm pretty OTP. On the other hand, I'll read just about anything if it's really, really long and has a happy ending:)

Coming Home (http://www.xanthe.org/SGA/cominghome/ch1.htm) & General & Dr. Sheppard (http://www.xanthe.org/SGA/generaldoctor/gendr.htm) by Xanthe
NC17; McKay/Sheppard; BDSM, Spanking, etc.
In the words of the Author herself:
"Colonel John Sheppard knew, from the moment he first met Dr Rodney McKay, that the man would be trouble.” [Coming Home]
"An accident with Ancient technology sucks a John and Rodney from an alternate universe onto Atlantis – and they have very different ideas about sex, marriage and relationships." [General & Dr. Sheppard]

My words:
This 'verse rocks! Oddly enough, it was my mother (who had absolutely no idea what BDSM was until I explained it to her after a certain CSI episode) who first introduced me to these stories. I was skeptical at first, but once I had read  them, I was totally converted! Although there are heavy BDSM undertones (and overtones!) in this story, it shouldn't interfere with your enjoyment of the story itself if that's not your kink - any explicit bits may be skipped if you wish. What makes this story so wonderful is the way that Xanthe has created an intricate culture and society in her AU, a culture which only differs from our own in a few tiny but very important details, or so it seems. Yes, there is certainly plenty of smut, but the real focus of the stories is the plot. And yes, definite happy endings!
While I have listed the stories in their chronological order, they may be read in any order you like. Coming Home is sort of a prequel to General & Dr. Sheppard. These stories may also be found on Area 52.

Dude, I used almost those exact same words when reccing Coming Home! I completely agree that these stories are surprisingly BDSM friendly; I think it's because the stories aren't *about* BDSM, they're about love and developing a relationship, and BDSM just happens to be the backdrop on which the story takes place.

(Also, your mother reads slash? Awesome:)

Thanks for the recs!

Welcome. Now that I've figured out the trick to making nicely formated comments without hand-coding the HTML, it's much easier to write good recs.

My mom is awesome. I introduced her to fan fiction when she saw my zine copy of Lady Ra's First Prime (great fic!). She was bored and decided that she would give it a try and - tada! - another fanfic convert! She wanted to know where she could find more, so I hooked her up to some archives and she's been reading ever since. She's a lot more equal-opportunity than me when it comes to genre, though. I LOVE slash, enjoy gen, and read het only as a last resort. She likes everything. I just introduced her to The Sentinel a few weeks ago, and I'm planning to introduce her to dueSouth once I head back to college this fall. Pity there isn't more Macgyver fic out there, she's a big fan. She hasn't started writing fic yet, but I figure it's only a matter of time... :)

I'd like to add "A Farm From Iowa" and all its many sequels. They are lovely AUs, and each is long on their own. And they are McShep!

How about [livejournal.com profile] mrshamill's stories, Slouching Towards Bethlehem and its sequel, And There Was War In Heaven? The first is 183k; the second is 285k, so between the two of them, it's pretty darn epic. The premise is that one day, Atlantis is unable to contact Earth -- the angst level runs fairly high for a while, but things get better. Established relationship McShep, with appearances by some members of SG-1.

I'm pretty sure I did read these -- is this the series where Atlantis seceded from Earth once they found out that the artificial gene killed anyone who went away from Atlantis for too long?

Aaah my major current otp. Merging this with your Harlequin AU I loved A Regency SGA tale http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=5261&warning=12. John saved Rodney from his abusive family who John plans to destroy. Very sweet and shoompy in the best tradition of Harlequin romance.

Have you been reading the SGA Big Bang stories http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=artwork
All McShep and I consider them epic.

Do you include series as epic recs. I don't know how you feel about kidfic but I love the Raising Madison series by Mrs Hamil http://www.hawksong.com/~thammill/SGA_Fic/SGA.htm. The A Life Less Ordinary series is a really well done look at John and Rodney in a Bdsm relationship. She just started posting part six http://puddle-of-goo.livejournal.com/12032.html which is an epic addition to an already long series. I know I have a ton more. I am new to SGA and McShep and I have found a lot of long good storis that I just love.

The R Word by Orithain & Rina is a nice long AU where John is a police detective on the hunt for kidnappers and Rodney is a troubled musician http://www.infinitum4.com/or/rword.html

But Never The Nights by lavvyan is a long and agnsty story about John thinking Rodney has been culled and poor Rodney going through a lot to surive on his own.

Fading Skies is an amazing story of John being premantly disabled and how both he and Rodney have to learn to live their lives with John as a paraplegic. Very realistic and well done http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=10959

In Cross Product John switches places with and AU version of himself. Both Rodney's have to save the day. http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=8314&warning=12

Cute As is a Genderbender story where Rodney is trapped in the body of a young Geni woman. John and Rodney deal with his new body and fall in love. http://www.corplink.com.au/~gillianm/SGA_page.htm

Unidentified is a recent story where Rodney loses his memory and is being reced all over the place. It really is good and long http://fiercelydreamed.livejournal.com/8714.html

I have found a lot of really good long McShep stories out there.

Ooo, I *love* SGA Harlequin (seriously, it's the best fandom for Harlequin fic I've ever seen). I think I read this one before, but I'll read it again, just to be sure;)

As for the Big Bang stories...Holy cow. I had no idea that was out there. Is there a first story that I can start with?

Thanks for the recs!

I read this one before and it'll probably be recced someday. I just wish the Rodney weren't so perfect in it -- his vulnerability is my favorite part of his character, and in Transcendental, he doesn't really have any. *sigh*

But it's good to see him lock John in the brig. I've been wanting to see that since *forever*:)

Thanks for the rec!

Woohoo, I can rec you something! Wheee! ;-))) So, I just read *this* rather epic McShep:

http://seperis.illuminatedtext.com/sga/world.html

which was recced somewhere else and although I do not really read SGA-fic as I haven't seen the show and don't know the characters or the canon I found the description intriguing enough to give it a try. And it was wonderful! Just, I didn't like the end. At. All. But, of course, I can't tell you why, because that would mean to spoil you. Anyway, don't fear, it's very likely that *you will* like the end, because your taste is far less nittygritty than mine, I believe.

Would love to talk about it with you when you've read it!

I was skimming, looking for epic length things to read, but I may as well mention mine. It's certainly long enough.

All in one file, In the City of Seven Walls (http://www.eternalvox.net/~auburn/citysevenwalls.html), author: Auburn.

I've written plenty of other long(ish) SGA fic, primarily Sheppard/McKay, but for one reason or another I don't think they'd fit and I already feel weird doing this.

Actually, someone already recced In the City of Seven Walls and I've added it to my (suddenly enourmous!) mountain o' fic to read:) Don't feel shy about offering up your own work -- sometimes that's the only way folks can find your stories.

New story by Speranza
Oh, my god, got a new one for you I just finished reading. It's Written by the Victors (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html) by [livejournal.com profile] speranza. It's so darn smart and realistic and dead-on characterizations. I'm literally shaken by how good this is. It's a Atlantis defects story but it also what happens after that. And after. And after. I just love John Sheppard during this story, and McKay, and oh, Teyla is so incredible, but Ronan, Ronan, can we elect him secretary of commerce? This fic is pretty new, Speranza just put it up at the first of the month and it's 334K. Oh, it's sweet. And can I just mention that the writing style is amazing? I've never seen an author use excerpts of 'published' works in fanfic to this degree. The story would be so much poorer without this wonderfully, convoluted style. It just incredible. Happy reading.

Freedom's Just A Word for Nothing Left To Lose (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/freedoms_just_another_word.html)

I've read this story at least 6 times, and each and everytime it gets better. For those of you who haven't read it (which is probably none of you, because it's thatgood and thatamazing) it's an SGA story set post-Atlantis. That's all the setting you need. And it's a Rodney story, a mature Rodney who has moved past his beginnings.

You've probably read it, you've probably rec'd it. It is totally and amaziningly and absolutely my favourite SGA story out there.

Actually, I have to admit that I tried to read Freedom and only made it about halfway through. I want to know I'm reading death-fic up front (primarily so I can avoid it) and when I realized what had happened to John I gave up. Of course, that's just my opinion -- I know lots of folks agree with you:)
