Introducing a shiny new fandom: Criminal Minds. I really wanted to post this last week during Small Fandom, but alas, it was not done until earlier this week.

Title: A Different Kind of Solitude
Fandom: Criminal Minds
Pairing: Aaron/Spencer
Categories: case-file, mystery, romance
Length: epic (~50,000)
Warnings: none other than minimal violence when Hotch and Reid are first abducted in chapter 1

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kyrdwyn
Website: The Dominic Keating Estrogen Brigade

Author's Summary: When Aaron and Spencer are trapped together by an unsub, things change between them while the team searches for their lost friends.

Review:
A Different Kind of Solitude brings two of my favourite things in fanfic together: a case that needs solving fast and a budding romance. I loved how the two storylines -- the rest of the BAU team trying to crack the case and Hotch and Reid's developing relationship -- are juxtaposed. Best of two worlds, really.

Abduction stories sometimes make me nervous because its usually associated with extensive violence and torture; this story has none. Hotch and Reid were not physically harmed and their imprisonment was fairly cushy as far as kidnappings go. *cough*Jane, it's safe for you to read*cough*

While Hotch and Reid had feelings for each other prior to their abduction and the imprisonment merely provided a opportunity for them to get close, the story does deal with what happens after their release. Ideally, the 'after' part could have been a bit longer, but that might just be the angst-phile in me talking.

If you like romance and case!fic in the same package, this is not a story to be missed.

Yay! Too bad it's on LJ (please tell me it's not in too many parts) but I'm excited enough about Criminal Minds fic to give it a go anyway. Thanks!

Um...sorry, it's in 15 parts. I wish I could help you there. In the author's defense, it is quite long (she wrote it for NaNoWriMo last year).

Ah, well. Sometimes you just have to make an exception:)

Um, no idea if you've read yet or not (or even plan to) but I can send it to you in one file if you'd like.

I am so happy to see this! Criminal Minds is one of the few shows I watch these days, but for one reason or other I never really got into the fandom. I look forward to more recs!
(Also, I love case!fics as well and it's wonderful to find one done right).

I love Criminal Minds, too! Too bad I'm not a fan of the most popular slash pairing in fandom (Morgan/Reid). But I'm really hoping that more awesome stories will be written in the future.

I have to admit this isn't one of the most elaborate case!fics out there, but I thought the romance kind of made up for it.

I'm not a fan of Morgan/Reid either, nor do I usually read stories involving Gideon in a romantic relationship, which limits the fics quite a bit (at least when it comes to the rec lists I've found or authors I usually read).
As long as the case is at least semi-plausible, it is an improvement over more than 90% of the case!fics I've read. And yes, a good romance does make up for a lot :)

Yes! to the Gideon comment. Plus he is Reid's mentor/replacement father figure, so anything that goes there (i.e. Gideon/Reid) is a bit too much for me. It's funny how I'll read actual incest but don't feel comfortable reading about two unrelated people who actually see each other as family enter a romantic relationship.
