RR: Rare Pairings, Gen, and Het Fics

  • Jul. 25th, 2010 at 7:39 AM
I hope you enjoyed our week of rare pairings and gen recs!  Even more, I hope you have a few fics to rec to us.  I'm also opening up the discussion to het recs, because I think they're more rare at ER these days than gen fics are and I know I'm not the only reccer here who'd like to see more het on the comm.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
-WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS.  Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the other RR posts originated by me) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Rare Pairings, Gen, and Het fics

Darn…gen fic…I have almost NO gen fic. And the few pieces I do have are ancient. Oh, well. Here they are:
Title: Lines in the Sand (http://www.demando.net/everglow/linesand.html) and Sunlight in My Cradle (http://www.demando.net/everglow/sunlight_cradle.html)
Author: Meredith Bronwen Mallory
Rating: R
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Gen
Genres: Dark, Family, Vampire
Length: Medium

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] garnettrees

Rec: Spike stumbles across a woman, a young Miss LaVelle, and instead of killing her or raping her he demands her firstborn. These stories beautiful character studies of both Mrs. Harris and Spike coming to terms with their pasts. They’re beautifully written and rather poignant. Both Spike and Mrs. Harris are portrayed so beautifully here I just wish there was more to these fics.

Title: Carving Out a Future (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-7832/dreamfall+Carving+Out+a+Future.htm)
Author: dreamfall
Rating: pg-13
Pairing: Gen
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Firefly
Genres: Crossover, Friendship, Future
Warnings: This is, and so far as I can tell will probably remain a WIP
Length: Epic

Rec: This is a Xander-centric Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Firefly crossover. I love that the author chose to take the more difficult road. Instead of using Spike or Angel, who naturally live forever already, the choice of using Xander and coming up with a quite original plot for why he’s there is very pleasing. The characterizations for everyone are spot on, and although all of the interactions are well thought out, I’d say the Xander/River interactions are especially fun to read. I’m not sure about the policy for reccing works in progress, but the writing here is so spot on I can’t not rec it.

Title: Amnesia!Spike (http://ultimate_ninja.tripod.com/beyond_the_pale/amnesia_spike.htm)
Author: Mahaliem
Rating: R
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Gen (if you squint you can see Buffy/Spike, Angel/Spike, and Xander/Spike)
Length: Long
Genres: humor, amnesia, crack

Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] mahaliem
Website: mahaliem (http://ultimate_ninja.tripod.com/beyond_the_pale/mahaliem_home.htm)

Rec: This is one of those stories that I’ve come back to time and again simply because it’s so funny. Spike is adorable, and since his memory’s gone, he’s not out of character being adorable. The way each of the other characters handles his amnesia is hilarious, and I really love that Mahaliem was able to avoid the typical Anya-bashing.

Thanks!

(BTW, have you ever considered reccing for Epic Recs? If so, drop me a line at janethunder at gmail dot com.)

Carving Out a Future is one of those fics that I cling to when I see people claiming that all crossovers are OOC and/or mere self-indulgence on the part of the authors. It makes me happy to see it recced, because I go back to it time and time again, and I love the thought of new people reading it, too. :D
