RR: Rare Pairings, Gen, and Het Fics

  • Jul. 25th, 2010 at 7:39 AM
I hope you enjoyed our week of rare pairings and gen recs!  Even more, I hope you have a few fics to rec to us.  I'm also opening up the discussion to het recs, because I think they're more rare at ER these days than gen fics are and I know I'm not the only reccer here who'd like to see more het on the comm.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
-Stories as a single file are preferred, if available.
-WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS.  Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the other RR posts originated by me) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Rare Pairings, Gen, and Het fics

Title: The Air Stings Like Autumn by ELG (R)
Link: http://www.bunnyfic.com/ELG/WestWing/The%20Air%20Stings%20Like%20Autumn.htm
Fandom: The West Wing
Pairing: gen, minor Sam/Mallory
Categories: angst, hurt/comfort, dramedy, AU
Length: Epic (~80,000 words)
Warnings: Violence, language, references to potential non-con (but no actual non-con)
Author on LJ: n/a?, hasn't been updated in a few years
Website: http://www.bunnyfic.com/ELG.htm

Author's summary: Sam Seaborn is kidnapped by a group of white supremacists.

ELG takes an unsatisfying (for me) Season 6 of TWW and finds away to 1) get Sam 'Spanky' Seaborn get kidnapped by white supremacists in Orange County, 2) revisit the myriad neuroses shared by the staffers of the Bartlett administration in a frankly terrifyingly believable way and 3) bring Sam back to the White House where he belongs, because I don't care what Rob Lowe wanted, Sam Seaborn needs to stay chained to a desk near the Oval Office. Thankfully, ELG thinks so, too.

She has the banter-dialogue down pat--it's almost too Sorkin-esque at times, frankly, and borders at some points on the precious, but 99% of the time she has a deft touch with the characters, making them believable and still vulnerable. Her exploration of Sam's PTSD is touching and carefully crafted, and she makes great use of some old friends: Mike Casper, Mallory McGarry, Ron Butterfield, and a few surprise cameos. All in all, a long, plotty, engaging story.

Journalism Ethics, by Angearia (PG-13)
Title: Journalism Ethics
Fandom: Community
Pairing: Gen with Jeff/Annie overtones
Categories: Humor
Length: Short (~1900 words)
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] angearia
Website: Fanfic Index (http://angearia.livejournal.com/33529.html)

Summary: Rainy days are the best time for spreading tall tales
Review:
This fic reads like an episode of Community, with all the zaniness and un-PC-ness that it entails. I loved the character voices, and the BFF/UST-ery between all of them (for reference, see here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEgrvOFY1IU)).

An Inordinate Fondness, by DameRuth (G)
Title: An Inordinate Fondness
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: gen
Categories: Humor, Fluff, Slice of Life
Length: Medium (~3400 words)
Warnings: idk, beetles?

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dameruth
Website: Teaspoon :: DameRuth (http://www.whofic.com/viewuser.php?uid=2528)

Summary: Ten and Donna share some relaxing moments, enlivened by arthropods
Review:
In my opinion, the one thing rarer than a well-written canon pairing is a well-written friendship between a man and a woman. The Doctor and Donna had this fantastic platonic chemistry going in the series, and it made it all the harder when the season finale rolled around and destroyed all of my dreams for their epic friendship. But this fic captures their friendship really well, and it's a genuine pleasure to read.

Lunch and Other Obscenities (http://www.goldenmaze.com/lunch.htm) by Rheanna
Rating: PG
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Pairing: Uhura&Gaila friendship, some Spock/Uhura
Genres: gen, friendship, humor, pre-canon
Length: medium (9,786 words)
Summary: Nyota liked her roommate just fine until she met her.

Great fic about culture shock at the academy between roommates Gaila and Uhura. Also creates a backstory on the Spock/Uhura relationship - I didn't like the pairing in the film (I'm generally a K/S shipper), but I really like the way it's done in this fic.

The Cheap Trick Acceleration (http://archiveofourown.org/works/36862) by Liviapenn
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: the Big Bang Theory
Pairing: very slight Sheldon/Penny
Genres: friendship, time travel, gen, pre-het? (haha), humor
Length: medium (6379 words)
Summary: Penny racks her brain for the next twenty miles, trying to think of a subtle way to bring up the topic of meeting your time-traveling future self, or being sent on a mission to avert an apocalypse-related death. Finally she tells herself Forget it, Penny, it's Nerdtown. Sheldon and Leonard have weirder conversations six times a day. Sometimes before breakfast. Sometimes over Twitter.

Absolutely hilarious fic about the relationship between Penny and Sheldon. I'm neutral on the idea of Sheldon/Penny and this is the first fic that I've read about the two of them, so I have no idea how this compares with Sheldon/Penny fic...yeah. Anyway, this is so funny, Penny's voice is so well done, there are lots of references to Star Trek XI - in my opinion, a very good fic.

Mike Cutter/Connie Rubirosa from the latest seasons of the original Law & Order are my (most recent, ha!) favorite pairing. Not a canon pairing, however, the UST between the two assistant district attorneys occasionally stole the show, IMO, and made me search out the small fandom for some good fic. Different Meanings By The Same Word (http://daygloparker.livejournal.com/1037614.html) by [livejournal.com profile] daygloparker is short and entertaining, without requiring the reader to have taken more than a passing glance at the show to enjoy it.

Author's Summary: "It comes to her suddenly, the root of what's been bothering her lately: Jack had been her boss. And Mike is so not."

[livejournal.com profile] startrekwriter's Sarek/Amanda epic The Native (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5566846/1/The_Native) (link goes to ff.net) is another example of the intelligent het fic coming out of the Star Trek XI fandom, highly recommend for those that don't mind kid!fic.

Author's Summary: The relationship that started it all - Sarek/Amanda. How a logical guy like Sarek fell for a human, and why he would defy his people to marry her. Sybock & Spock will be featured.

Darn…gen fic…I have almost NO gen fic. And the few pieces I do have are ancient. Oh, well. Here they are:
Title: Lines in the Sand (http://www.demando.net/everglow/linesand.html) and Sunlight in My Cradle (http://www.demando.net/everglow/sunlight_cradle.html)
Author: Meredith Bronwen Mallory
Rating: R
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Gen
Genres: Dark, Family, Vampire
Length: Medium

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] garnettrees

Rec: Spike stumbles across a woman, a young Miss LaVelle, and instead of killing her or raping her he demands her firstborn. These stories beautiful character studies of both Mrs. Harris and Spike coming to terms with their pasts. They’re beautifully written and rather poignant. Both Spike and Mrs. Harris are portrayed so beautifully here I just wish there was more to these fics.

Title: Carving Out a Future (http://www.tthfanfic.org/Story-7832/dreamfall+Carving+Out+a+Future.htm)
Author: dreamfall
Rating: pg-13
Pairing: Gen
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Firefly
Genres: Crossover, Friendship, Future
Warnings: This is, and so far as I can tell will probably remain a WIP
Length: Epic

Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] dreamfall_nnwm

Rec: This is a Xander-centric Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Firefly crossover. I love that the author chose to take the more difficult road. Instead of using Spike or Angel, who naturally live forever already, the choice of using Xander and coming up with a quite original plot for why he’s there is very pleasing. The characterizations for everyone are spot on, and although all of the interactions are well thought out, I’d say the Xander/River interactions are especially fun to read. I’m not sure about the policy for reccing works in progress, but the writing here is so spot on I can’t not rec it.

Title: Amnesia!Spike (http://ultimate_ninja.tripod.com/beyond_the_pale/amnesia_spike.htm)
Author: Mahaliem
Rating: R
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Gen (if you squint you can see Buffy/Spike, Angel/Spike, and Xander/Spike)
Length: Long
Genres: humor, amnesia, crack

Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] mahaliem
Website: mahaliem (http://ultimate_ninja.tripod.com/beyond_the_pale/mahaliem_home.htm)

Rec: This is one of those stories that I’ve come back to time and again simply because it’s so funny. Spike is adorable, and since his memory’s gone, he’s not out of character being adorable. The way each of the other characters handles his amnesia is hilarious, and I really love that Mahaliem was able to avoid the typical Anya-bashing.

Carving Out a Future is one of those fics that I cling to when I see people claiming that all crossovers are OOC and/or mere self-indulgence on the part of the authors. It makes me happy to see it recced, because I go back to it time and time again, and I love the thought of new people reading it, too. :D
