Spread the Epic Love

  • Sep. 23rd, 2008 at 10:25 AM
I've been debating doing something like this for months now, but I've been holding off until I was sure the comm was ready.  Now that we have a level of organization that would make Adrian Monk weep with joy (fandom tags! pairing tags!  length tags!  genre tags!  delicious tags! memories!), multiple reccers to guarantee recs every single weekday and some weekends, over three hundred recs and counting, and a fabulous range of regular fandoms, I think it's time.  It's time to...

Spread the Epic Recs Love!

Ahem.  In other words, we love this comm and we want to introduce it to others.  Yes, that's right.  It's time to pimp.

The only problem is, I sort of suck at pimping, primarily because I feel so self-conscious about it.  Thus I would love some suggestions for places where people would not only not mind me pimping this comm, but would actually appreciate hearing about a resource for recs in their fandom(s).

Can you help me?  Please?

(And, hey, if you want to introduce a few folks to ER, we're not going to complain:)

ETA: Mei suggested that I include a blurb for those folks who wish to spread the love for us:

Tired of short stories?  Looking for longer fic?  Check out Epic Recs, a multifandom rec comm with a focus on long first-time stories with happy endings.

Current regular fandoms include The Sentinel, Stargate: Atlantis, Harry Potter, Star Trek (various iterations), and more, with over 60 fandoms recced in total.

The comm:
http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/
The memories (sorted by fandom):
http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=epic_recs
Our delicious page:
http://del.icio.us/epic_recs

ETA 2: Added bonus!  I'll post a bonus rec for every ten new readers we get between now and Friday.  Whee!  (Added bonus for me: finally making a dent in my overwhelming backlog of recs;)

Incident Report by K'Sal (PG)

  • Sep. 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Title: Incident Report.
Fandom: Star Trek (The Original Series).
Pairing: Jim Kirk/Spock.
Categories: Bonding, Epistolary, Established Relationship.
Length: Long.
Warnings: None.

Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: intuition :: calculation

Author's Summary:
“Kirk sends Spock an incident report, but Spock claims there wasn't an incident. Just what exactly is going on here?”

Review:
In this wonderful fic, K'Sal explores one of the greatest aspects of Kirk and Spock's relationship: how, despite being so very different (Spock with his logic, Kirk with his hunches), they still manage to complement each other perfectly.

K/S bonding fics tend to get a bit repetitive after a while, but this one has a refreshing take on it (perhaps because it - thankfully - omits drawn-out, simpering declarations of eternal love). Through Starfleet reports and text message communications we get a fascinating take on Vulcan customs and an interesting view on the development of Kirk and Spock's romantic relationship.

Convenience by Moth (NC-17)

Membership drive bonus rec!

Title: Convenience by Moth (NC-17)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Snape
Categories: Harlequin, Marriage of Convenience
Length: long
Warnings: not book seven compliant

Author on LJ: n/a?
Author Website: n/a?

Review:
You know, I should just go ahead and have a Harry Potter Marriage/Bonding of Convenience week. I've never seen a fandom with so many MoC stories. (This is not a bad thing.)

In this particular iteration, Snape can't inherit Prince Manor unless he gets married within a month. Coincidentally enough, Harry has a little, er, *problem* that can only be cured by a massively complicated potion that only Severus is good enough to make. The solution? Marriage of course! If only Harry had bothered to ask if there was such a thing as divorce in the wizarding world...

Fair warning: the ending of this story seems a little rushed. Still, it's more than made up for by the way Moth gloriously wallows in all of the best MoC cliches. Codicil to the will! Hatred turning into love! Fabulously hot first time sex! Frankly, every fandom needs at least one (or ten) Marry for the Inheritance fic.

Clueless!Jeeves fic from Jeeves's POV, which is a doubly difficult task. Fortunately, Ms Liz knows her stuff, because this story is both believable and remarkably sweet.  A little bit of fluff to ring in the new season.

Review:
A month or so before Christmas, Bertie starts acting quiet and subdued -- i.e., not like himself at all. Jeeves worries about this, but can't figure out what is wrong, at least not until he stumbles across a letter Bertie has written to Father Christmas...

Clueless!Jeeves fic from Jeeves's POV, which is a doubly difficult task. Fortunately, Ms Liz knows her stuff, because this story is both believable and remarkably sweet.  A little bit of fluff to ring in the new season.
