Spread the Epic Love

  • Sep. 23rd, 2008 at 10:25 AM
I've been debating doing something like this for months now, but I've been holding off until I was sure the comm was ready.  Now that we have a level of organization that would make Adrian Monk weep with joy (fandom tags! pairing tags!  length tags!  genre tags!  delicious tags! memories!), multiple reccers to guarantee recs every single weekday and some weekends, over three hundred recs and counting, and a fabulous range of regular fandoms, I think it's time.  It's time to...

Spread the Epic Recs Love!

Ahem.  In other words, we love this comm and we want to introduce it to others.  Yes, that's right.  It's time to pimp.

The only problem is, I sort of suck at pimping, primarily because I feel so self-conscious about it.  Thus I would love some suggestions for places where people would not only not mind me pimping this comm, but would actually appreciate hearing about a resource for recs in their fandom(s).

Can you help me?  Please?

(And, hey, if you want to introduce a few folks to ER, we're not going to complain:)

ETA: Mei suggested that I include a blurb for those folks who wish to spread the love for us:

Tired of short stories?  Looking for longer fic?  Check out Epic Recs, a multifandom rec comm with a focus on long first-time stories with happy endings.

Current regular fandoms include The Sentinel, Stargate: Atlantis, Harry Potter, Star Trek (various iterations), and more, with over 60 fandoms recced in total.

The comm:

The memories (sorted by fandom):

Our delicious page:

ETA 2: Added bonus!  I'll post a bonus rec for every ten new readers we get between now and Friday.  Whee!  (Added bonus for me: finally making a dent in my overwhelming backlog of recs;)

Dude, feel free to let them know we exist! Unless I can post there without being a member, in which case I can let them know we exist (though I'd need links:)

Heh. Mei has all of the best ideas:)

Thanks for the loving! (Every time I type that, it sounds dirtier...)

Spread! http://busaikko.livejournal.com/102121.html

(I'm asking for Snupin recs from my flist *g* I love you muchly, despite my fear of ending up on Epic Rants.)

Yay! Thank you:)

Honestly, I think I've gotten more thanks from authors who have been featured on Rants than grumbles. Generally speaking, our rants are pretty nice (and sometimes more complimentary than our recs!)

Someone on my flist just asked if there was rec comm for long, unhappy stories with angst, death, pain, and suffering. I directed her to [livejournal.com profile] epic_rants. You don't know of any others which are specifically for that purpose? *doubts, asks anyway*

(The other request was for Snape/Lupin in Harry Potter. I am trying to recruit a reccer for you for that. We have many epic stories... I wrote one myself, which was left off that list *sulks* ... though it is not your cup of tea at all, love!)

Uh, if there is such a comm, I would undoubtedly run screaming in the other direction:) That said, Mei's starting a series of recs for sad stories, which might fit your friend's request. Not sure how long they'll be, but I trust they'll be very, very depressing. (And, uh, no promises that I'll be reading the stories myself.)

Speaking of Mei, I think she'd be very open to trying out Snape/Lupin if some were recced to her. (The key is to include all of the information we include in our own recs -- it makes the stories sound more enticing:) I'll post an RR to that effect.

Yes, some Snupin love would definitely be appreciated! :)

Um...someone actually asked for long, unhappy stories with angst, death, pain, and suffering??? Dude, I want to be a member if anyone ever finds this comm. Here are some stories I can think of that fit the description (all long/epic length):

Ichor (SGA)
http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/66351.html

Freedom Is Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose (SGA)
http://community.livejournal.com/epic_rants/2936.html

My Father's Son (House MD)
http://community.livejournal.com/epic_rants/4145.html

The Just and Magnificent Chronicles (Narnia)
http://community.livejournal.com/epic_rants/3688.html

I will be starting a new rec series that run once a month for sad, depressing stories (that most likely contains character-death). A lot of the stories will be under 10,000 words, since I like short stories that pack a punch.

There's a line that gets crossed somewhere, between a good but very painful story (say, Freedom's Just...) and one that exists solely to inflict pain and torment. Many of the archives (like Issues of Consent) carry the full spectrum, so it is very much caveat lector. A recs comm is definitely needed for those discriminating readers who don't want gratuitous torture. *ponders*

My no-happy-end links on Delicious are here: http://delicious.com/marysuefanfic/no-happy-end (I have a separate tag for apocafic (http://delicious.com/marysuefanfic/apocafic) but a lot of those end happily.)

The epic unhappy ones that I can think of are Destina Fortunato's Unmade (http://www.lyricalmagic.com/unmade.html) (SG1, Jack/Daniel-ish), which made me cry (me! and my heart of stone!), and Kat Allison's The End of the Road (http://www.katallison.com/eotr.htm) (dueSouth, Fraser/Kowalski), which made me ache (and in which all the pain is internal and emotional and we hope against hope but get crushed anyway. Whcih is why I love it.)

I wrote Building Bombs (http://community.livejournal.com/atlantis_9to5/3750.html) (SGA AU, McKay and Sheppard), which is one of those dumb stories where if you read the warning the ending is spoiled. It's also short (11000 words).

Off to try some of your links now....

Oh, hey, one more question! What is the word count for an epic? I've been assuming 50,000, but I note that Ichor (yup, already reading) is 30,000. *arms of yay!*
[identity profile] meishali.livejournal.com wrote:

The links I gave were either long (15,000-40,000) or epic (>40,000). I know everyone has a slightly different word count which can be confusing at times. :)

Ichor is wonderful. The Just and Magnificent Chronicles are very good, though I didn't like the ending. Not because of its character death, but I felt the death wasn't quite necessary.

Thanks for the recs! Your story Building Bombs sounds very promising! ;p

See, I don't feel a good story, happy or unhappy, should have gratuitous torture (or sex, for that matter). One of the things that differentiates a good story from a bad one is whether the author can make events in the story feel natural. For example, the rape in Tess of the d'Urbervilles was hardly described at all, but that didn't make it any less powerful. I dislike stories where authors use killing off characters as a literary device in attempt to make the story more memorable.

*laughs out loud, winces* Well, please to be remembering that Building Bombs is not an OTP fic, it is a tragedy of inaction, okay? (and yeah, you can rant at me....) I love the story, but in some ways I think it failed, because many people didn't understand where it was going or how it got there: the ending shocked instead of seeming inevitable. /rambling

I get nervous about loving descriptions of the details of, say, a torture: unless that is the *point* (like the SF story On the Uses of Torture, which has haunted me) then, to me, by romanticizing it it trivializes it, if that makes sense. (We all carry our own baggage: I have friends and family who have been raped, I lived in a country which practiced torture, I've known people who've been shot, I've had machine guns pointed at me... so I prefer that an author have respect for whatever badness she/he is describing.) /TMI

Heh: sadly, you have caught me on my morning off. I will not stop spamming you....

Hm, I see you what you mean. *and winces at my own sentence you just quoted...*
What I don't like are authors who use torture/violence lightly, as a device to bring characters together or to (cheaply) illicit certain feelings from readers...

Unfortunately, it's late in my time zone and I'll be off to bed soon. Will respond to you comments tomorrow :)

OMG Ichor has hollowed out a space in my soul and moved right in. Everything I've ever wanted in a wraith fic, wrapped up in glorious world-building and lyrical language. I'm a bit blinking and stunned right now. Thank you for pointing the way!
