The Wish by Lady Ra (NC-17)

  • Jul. 10th, 2008 at 2:43 PM
Yes, it is [personal profile] fredericks day to post (and I should probably stop doing this before she starts throwing things at me), but I'm going to have uncertain internet access tomorrow and I thought it safer to post this today.

Title: The Wish
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: drama, AU (sorta)
Length: long
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: n/a?
Author Website: http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/home.htm

Review:
After learning that his father had always known about his senses, Jim gets rip-roaring drunk. And kisses Blair. And wishes that he'd met Blair during the whole Bud incident when he was a kid. And then passes out. Heh. Blair, riding high on the kiss, goes outside and repeats Jim's wish to a whole meteor storm of falling stars. Guess that's what it takes to make a wish come true. The thing is, though, sometimes wishes have unexpected consequences.

One thing I love about the Sentinel fandom is that years after the show went off the air, the fandom is still going strong. This story was written in 2005, by a writer that I know primarily from the Stargate fandoms, and I can see the newer shows' influence in the care she takes with the paradoxes of time travel. Sure, it seems like nothing can go wrong with a wish to make your best friend's life better, but what if that new life doesn't include you? How does his absence change your life, and are those changes for the better for you?

Of course, we all know that any story I rec is going to have a happy ending, but the journey to get there is one of the most well-thought out and interesting I've read in a long time. A beautiful, thought-provoking story.

Epic Recs is (over) a year old!

  • Jul. 10th, 2008 at 2:54 PM
This is a little late, as I completely spaced on ER's birthday what with all the craziness of the Small Fandom Big Bang (though, speaking of, the first round is over and there's lots of fic to enjoy), housesitting (I'm actually ready to be back in my crappy apartment now), and working on wedding presents (though I've just finished an afghan that I have been working on for, literally, ten years, so that's one of two down!)  Still, I've been wanting to do something as an anniversary type thing for months, so I figure better late than never.

Ahem.  So, Epic Recs has been around for exactly a little over a year!  Hard to believe that this time in June of last year this little comm kicked off with just me and a handful of fandoms.  We've now grown to five full-time reccers and 5...10...20...a whole crapload of fandoms.  For those that have been with us from the beginning, thanks for hanging around, and for those who are new to the comm, welcome!

As part of our on-going efforts to make this the best rec comm on the net, I have a few questions.  Answers will be rewarded with...uh...thank yous.  And lots of gratitude:)

1.  How did you find Epic Recs?  How long have you been a reader here?

2.  How many (and which) of our fandoms do you read?  Are there any fandoms that you would especially like to see added to the roster?

3.  Do you find the layout of the comm easy to use?  Are there any changes you'd like to see?

4.  Any general comments you'd like to add?  We're always looking for feedback!

Thanks again, everyone.  Hope to see you all again next year!
