Epic Recs is (over) a year old!

  • Jul. 10th, 2008 at 2:54 PM
This is a little late, as I completely spaced on ER's birthday what with all the craziness of the Small Fandom Big Bang (though, speaking of, the first round is over and there's lots of fic to enjoy), housesitting (I'm actually ready to be back in my crappy apartment now), and working on wedding presents (though I've just finished an afghan that I have been working on for, literally, ten years, so that's one of two down!)  Still, I've been wanting to do something as an anniversary type thing for months, so I figure better late than never.

Ahem.  So, Epic Recs has been around for exactly a little over a year!  Hard to believe that this time in June of last year this little comm kicked off with just me and a handful of fandoms.  We've now grown to five full-time reccers and 5...10...20...a whole crapload of fandoms.  For those that have been with us from the beginning, thanks for hanging around, and for those who are new to the comm, welcome!

As part of our on-going efforts to make this the best rec comm on the net, I have a few questions.  Answers will be rewarded with...uh...thank yous.  And lots of gratitude:)

1.  How did you find Epic Recs?  How long have you been a reader here?

2.  How many (and which) of our fandoms do you read?  Are there any fandoms that you would especially like to see added to the roster?

3.  Do you find the layout of the comm easy to use?  Are there any changes you'd like to see?

4.  Any general comments you'd like to add?  We're always looking for feedback!

Thanks again, everyone.  Hope to see you all again next year!

1. I was reading some of your fic. when you started this and along I came.

2. Mainly S.G.A., Harry Potter, The Sentinel, C.S.I. and others depending on the content.

3. Yes

4. Just to say, thank you for all the hard work you all put into this site and of course the great Recs.

Happy Anniversary.

Thank you! Actually, I remember you as one of the first folks to join my fic comm as well:)

And, hey, isn't it your birthday soon? Happy birthday (in advance:)

I think I just did a search for fic recs.

2. How many (and which) of our fandoms do you read? Are there any fandoms that you would especially like to see added to the roster?

HP, SGA, Smallville, The Sentinel, CSI

3. Do you find the layout of the comm easy to use? Are there any changes you'd like to see?

It's great for me. The simpler, the better. (Um, I read everything using the FireFox addon so that it shows up in style=mine or format=light, so I have no clue what your actual layout looks like...just FYI.)

4. Any general comments you'd like to add? We're always looking for feedback!

You guys rock!

3. Hee! Though I'd like to think our style is pretty simple, I have to admit that there's probably code we don't need.

Also, four of those five fandoms are mine (and I really need to get some more Smallville recs written up, stat), so thank you again! I always like hearing that someone is reading my reviews:)

1. I love Epic Recs! And also, I dont actually know how long I've been a reader...

2. Fandoms? SGA, Due South, Harry Potter - I always read and rec you've got for these fandoms, and thank you very much because it's led me to some of my favourites! Other fandoms include Smallville, House & Sports Night
Fandoms I'd like to see? Trek? There seems to be a limited range of the fandom, especially when it comes to Enterprise, which I enjoy reading fic most for

3. I'm easy to please :)

4. Thank you for being fantastical :) lol. Oh and the first thing I saw when I glanced at my flist was Epic Recs is over, but then i calmed down and processed the brackets and the rest of the title...

1. Thank you!

2. I think both Mei and SG are reccing Trek, so you should see more stories in the future. It's tough when you only rec one story a week. (Of course, if you rec too many stories a week you tend to run out of stories to rec. I learned that the hard way:) There will definitely be more Smallville and Sports Night recs in the future, though it might be a couple of months as I'm working through my backlog of reviews (mostly Harry Potter, Sentinel, and random small fandoms).

4. Never fear, ER is here to stay. Especially if I can keep getting such wonderful co-reccers:)

Hey there! I'm slinking out of lurkerdom to answer your q's, since I love Epic Recs!

1. I actually don't remember how I found you, since it was so long ago! I think I started reading your recs early last fall, when it was just a few fandoms.

2. I read primarily Supernatural these days (mostly Sam&Dean but some J2), but I'm also an avid reader of Sentinel, Stargate SG1, Buffy (Spike/Xander or Angel/Xander slash, usually) and Harry Potter. I absolutely love Magnificent 7 (ATF AU and Old West, or any other incarnation of the boys) and Fast and the Furious, and wish I could find more fics in these 2 fandoms (*hint hint please*). Other fandoms I've read in and enjoy whenever a really great fic comes to my attention: Rurouni Kenshin, Inu Yasha, Lord of the Rings (fictional characters or actors), Dragonriders of Pern (also a pretty rare fandom, since she only recently decided to allow fanfiction - I'd love to see Pern!recs), Anita Blake (I dunno if you've come across it, but the Anita Blake / Harry Potter crossover Inevitable knocks my socks of and is an alost completed WIP, that introduced me to the Anita Blake fandom).

3. Very easy to use the comm - I love the tags!

4. Thanks so much for reccing all this wonderful stories for us!
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

Thank you -- we always love to hear from readers (especially for the first time:)

1. Oh man have my reading tastes expanded since then -- that's the great thing about co-reccers: they get you to read things you usually don't.

2. We have a SPN and a M7 reccer so you should definitely see recs in both of those fandoms. Actually, I believe we have a Buffy and RK reccer as well (suddenly I'm feeling pretty good about our range of covered fandoms:) I'm reading an Anita Blake/Lexx crossover; we'll see how it goes:)

3. Good to hear:)

4. Thanks for reading!

Will definitely try to rec SPN :) And maybe I'll work on the LotRs as well.

I didn't even know there were any The Fast and the Furious stories out there! Will look into that.

I actually googled "Written by the Victors by Speranza" and ended up reading your very good recommendation about it ( and yes that recommendation convinced me that I absolutely had to read the story and thank you for that it's one of my new all time favourites).

2. Mainly SGA,HP and Buffy but I'm always on the look out for new interesting fandoms.

3.Yes

4. I am so glad I found my way here. This is really excellent. Thank you for all the hard work.

1. How did you find Epic Recs?

I automatically friended it when you announced it on TS_News or wherever last year. I think I friend you, personally, later.

2. How many (and which) of our fandoms do you read?

I mostly read TS and SGA. I have the potential to read DS, M7, SPN, Bones, HL, MacGyver, Quantum leap... but I'm so busy with the first two, my own writing, beta'ing, and RL that the potential isn't very strong.

3. Do you find the layout of the comm easy to use? I use style=mine, but when I visit directly (going back to find whatever), it's comfortable and easy on the eyes.

4. Any general comments you'd like to add?

I really appreciate this comm. I don't actually use it a lot at present (see #2), but when I want something new it's nice to click on the appropriate fandom tag and have a bunch of recs at my fingertips. Thank you for your work and input.

*waves hello* I thought it only polite to answer your questions since I do read the recs.

[1. How did you find Epic Recs? How long have you been a reader here?]

I stumbled across Epic Recs by accident a few months ago. I was cruising random friends lists of writers I'd visited and saw an entry for this comm and was hooked. Because one can never have too many fic to read, right?

~~~ ~ ~~~
[2. How many (and which) of our fandoms do you read? Are there any fandoms that you would especially like to see added to the roster?]
Actually, I hold you responsible for hooking me on Fraser/RayK.
*glares menacingly before grinning like a fool*
I read The Sentinel, Due South (thank you!), SGA on a regular basis. I also enjoy CSI (Nick/Greg is my slash choice, but my main pairing there is het) now and again. House is an occasional read, but it's hard to find well-written House/Wilson fic.
It's a tough call as to what to add to the roster. I enjoy Law & Order Criminal Intent (even written a few long-ish ones myself), Stargate SG1, CSI:NY, some Firefly but I'm not hardcore in the fandom. I also like BtVS on occasion (preferably X/S or X/A).
Oh! What about crossovers - especially ones that are unexpected?
One of the things I like is when you delve into the smaller fandoms. It's good to see them being recognized, even if they are not one I'd personally follow.
~~~ ~ ~~~
[3. Do you find the layout of the comm easy to use? Are there any changes you'd like to see?]

I have not problems with the comm layout. I really hadn't thought about changes, so I have no suggestions.

~~~ ~ ~~~
[4. Any general comments you'd like to add? We're always looking for feedback!]
This is a fun comm that sometimes takes a walk on the wild side (still recovering from the Care Bears thing).
An addition I'd like to suggest is occasionally a link to background on some of the fandoms - especially the more obscure ones. Every so often, I see a story that sounds kind of interesting, but I shy away because I don't know the characters or their particular universe at all.
I honestly don't know where you'd get the backgrounders (imdb? tv.com? the dreaded wiki?) but it has crossed my mind on occasion that this would be a good idea.
~~~ ~ ~~~
So, there you have it - a few random thoughts in response to your questions. Once again, thank you so much for your dedication to this. There are stories I would never have known about if I hadn't read about them here.

Cheers!

1. Amen!

2. I think we have reccers covering Buffy and SG-1, and I'm covering CSI and House (well, technically. I'm having a tough time finding new fic), so you should see more recs in those. I used to adore crossovers, then fell out with them (mainly because a lot of crossovers are gen), but seem to be getting in the mood for them again. And Mei and I both love small fandoms, so you'll definitely see more of those (in fact next week I'm reccing one of my favorite fics of all time in a truly bitty fandom. Keep an eye out!)

4. Hee! You know, none of my fellow reccers have even tried reading the Care Bear fic, but it really is a freaking hilarious (albeit, deeply disturbing) fic:)

We've had folks suggest background information for fandoms before; unfortunately the fandoms for which background information would be useful are usually the very same fandoms for which there isn't much background information out there. We're still trying to come up with a solution to that one, but I suspect we'll have something in place by the end of the year. Hopefully without me having to write all of the backgrounds up myself:)

Thank you so much for the comments!

1. I only recently came across you after your post in sentinelficfind. But I am a voracious slash reader and reccer and reader of recs. :-)

2. From your profile list: SGA, Due South, The Sentinel, House, Harry Potter, Smallville, The O.C. As others have said, SG-1, and I'm thrilled to see some recs there. Others fandoms I read the good stuff in are 6 Degrees of Due South, Supernatural and CW RPS, Chuck, Hot Fuzz, Torchwood, Die Hard 4, LOTR and Lotrips.

3. It works for me!

4. I'm looking forward to diving into back recs after ficathon season is over. Maybe after I've been around longer I will have more intelligent feedback. For now it's just, YAY, RECS! :-)

1. Hee, I remember that! Also know as 'the time Jane was too lazy to look up the link in her own recs. Again.' :)

2. Wow, we seem to have a lot of overlap, which is fantastic. For the other fandoms, I know Mei is getting into some of the RPS fandoms and I'm working hard at finding good stuff from Chuck and DH4 (actually, I already have a couple of recs written for the latter -- I just have to find time to post).

4. Hey, I think we can all get behind the YAY, RECS motto:) Thanks for commenting!

1. Pure dumb luck. A rec from my flist led me to a link to your LJ. I've only been watching the comm for a few days - and plowing through the lists of recs.

2. Not many - but I'm devout! Due South, The Sentinel and SG1 seem to be it these days. Then again, I found my way to slash fanfic through gay smut to original slash and then to fanfic, so I'm probably atypical.

3. I like the memory layout.

4. Um. Maybe a master list with links to the various slash rec lists? I have little or no interest in gen fic. Colour me shallow.

1. I'm a fan of dumb luck:)

2. Hey, at least all three are active fandoms here! I can promise plenty of Sentinel recs (most of my recs these days seem to be The Sentinel and Harry Potter), and I know fredericks is working on finding new DS and SG-1 fics to rec. (Also, we have an original fic tag; Mei had a field day reccing original slash fic a few months ago. You might want to check it out,)

2. Fandomwise, I read almost anything that's well written. I even read stories from fandoms I have never seen canon of. Wikipedia is a great resource for new fandoms or no longer rerun series(like The Sentinel).

3. Yes, but don't let that prevent you from making cosmetic changes. Just remember, tags=happiness

4. I really enjoy this rec site. I enjoy the consistent updates and the quality recs. I haven't seen any rec that made me go 'Why is THAT here?!' You've managed to find some of the hidden gems of many fandoms. Thank y'all for all the wonderful work. It's greatly appreciated.

3. We have totally embraced the tags=happiness philosophy. In fact we now find ourselves worried about running out of tags. That's what happens when your mod is a bit OCC:)

Hi & happy anniversary [livejournal.com profile] epic_recs!

1. I stumbled upon this comm a few months ago, via a Google search I think.
2. SGA is my most favourite and most consistently read fandom. I also sometimes read DS, TS and Smallville. I've recently discovered HP, and that is what I find myself reading mostly at the moment as it has totally sucked me in even though I have no experience with its canon.
3. Yes - you have a nice and simple comm layout and no changes spring to mind.
4. It's a fantastic rec comm - thank you all for your hard work! I especially like reading why you guys are reccing particular fics as that gives me a good idea of whether my tastes align with yours.

Thank you once again!

2. Oh, man, HP has totally sucked me in as well. That and small fandoms -- now that I've discovered fanfiction downloader, I'm reading all of those tiny fandoms I'd never considered before.

4. I have to admit, one of the reasons I started this comm was because I was tired of reading fic recs that consisted of a title, author, and single quote. To me, those were utterly useless: at the very least I need to know the pairing and the length of a story, and I very much prefer recs that include a review. Thus ER was born:)

Happy Anniversary
1) You announced the birth of this site over on one of the SGA rec/story sites last year and I hustled over to join. Love, love, love epic recs.

2) SGA, Smallville, Due South F/V, CSI, Sentinel, HP and Popslash are the fandoms I came into Epic Recs with but didn't know where to find giant stories. Boy, you've hooked me up. (g) You've also gotten me hooked on Mag 7, DH4, Hikaru no go, Master & Commander, Jeeves & Wooster, & Samurai Champloo. So, I would love to see more of them and SG-1, Buffy and/or Angel, more Mag 7 & DH4, X-Files, Star Trek, any and all Anita Blake (gotta be better than the books, though), Dresden Files, Smallville, Definitely SPN, More Comics slash - DC, Marvel or Indepentent titles, and Naruto.

3) I like the layout, especially that I can click on a link and get all the recs for that fandom. Makes it so easy to rec this site to others. Crack_Van recently changed it's layout and made it harder to find things ... and it made me appreciate how user-friendly your site is. I especially enjoy your weekly (bi-weekly/monthly) subject headings. I've gotten some great stories and websites to explore from the comments people leave. Even if you don't eventually rec what they rec, it's fun to see what everyone else likes. Very helpful.

4) This is the site I recommend to my friends. It's so varied and fun. I love it. And you are the only rec site that has rec the size I like. And I love that you give us a clear idea of what each story size should be. Very Helpful. And you clearly define what you won't rec. About the only rec I could offer you is to put your general info at the top of the community. Make it a post dated 12/12/12 so that it always comes up first.

Re: Happy Anniversary
1. Dude, who doesn't love epic recs? (Though, as I type that, I remembered all those folks who apologized in their recs on other comms because the stories were too long to read in one sitting (i.e., anything over 5,000 words) while I was sitting there going, 'why bother reading something that short?')

2. Wow, out of that huge list, there are only two that don't currently have reccers (Popslash and Anita Blake). Sounds like we're a good fit:)

3. When the readers' recs work, they really work. Of course, sometimes we don't get any responses at all. Then it's kind of depressing:) Still, it's a feature we all like and I trust that it'll be around for a long time.

4. I have to admit, I have tried in the past to put a header post at the top of the comm (as you suggested), but it turns out LJ doesn't let you forward date a post in a community. Which is incredibly irritating, since a header post makes much more sense in a community than in a personal journal. Grr.

Thanks for all of your comments!

1. I did a search for recs commms on lj and saw that someone had recced one of my favorite authors [livejournal.com profile] laurabryannan the next post was the Monster Harry Potter epics and I lost a good month or to to Saving Connor, from then on I was hooked, I've been lurking since then.

2. Harry Potter, Jeeves and Wooster, (shamefully enjoying the) High School Musical, Psych, Smallville (you turned me), Champloo, Sentinel, Star Trek, Grey's Anatomy. This comm has always recced new fandoms or pairings that I would never get into if I hadn't seen it here, I say just keep up the small and rare fandom love, lately I've really been into Babysitters Club fanfic so if anyone has recs for that, otherwise I'm really into Drake and Josh, and Tin Man fandom which has really grown lately.

3 The comm is easy to use the tag system is extremely comprehensive.

4. Keep up the great work, this comm made me enjoy fanfic again.

1. I *loved* Laura's Samurai Champloo series. Just perfect, from beginning to end:.

2. Wait, you needed *me* to turn you to Smallville slash? I find that ironic, since that was the show that turned me to slash in the first place:) We don't currently have anyone reccing Babysitters Club, Drake and Josh, or Tin Man (though I'm eagerly awaiting the DVDs for the latter to come in the mail), but we are all adding new fandoms regularly, so keep an eye on the comm.

4. Thank you!
