RR -- Attempted Suicide

  • Jan. 27th, 2008 at 7:48 PM
I'm not sure if I'll have internet access tomorrow, so I'm posting this a day early.

It's another theme week, with a theme I'm sure you'd never thought you'd see here at Epic Recs: Attempted Suicide fic.  I'm actually kind if surprised myself, but I kept finding good attempted suicide fic and finally I gave into the inevitable.  Just to keep in mind: the recs I'll be posting this week are all *attempted* suicide fic, because we all know how well I do with character death (please also keep that in mind when offering recs in this theme -- I really, really have no interest in reading a story where one of the main characters dies).

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Amends by Rogue (PG-13)

Title: Amends
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: angst
Length: medium
Warnings: songfic (if, like me, you have no interest in songfic, you can skip over the lyrics without impacting the story too much)

Author on LJ: n/a?
Author Website: (Help? I know she has one, but I can't seem to find it again)

Review:
I've read a *lot* of post TS by BS fic, and the speculations on Blair's future have run the gamut from detective to fiction author to part-owner of a B&B. Most have addressed how difficult it would be for Blair to fit back into society (much less a police force) having denounced himself as a hell of a fraud and thus shot his academic career and his credibility in the foot. Rogue goes a different route, one that I think is very reasonable under the circumstances: depression. After all, Blair's life pretty much sucks at this point and there's not a lot of hope for the future. It's easy to see how he might decide to end it all.

There are a lot of good aspects to this fic -- the writing, the characterization -- but what I'm most impressed with is the depiction of Blair's depression. Rogue is right on target, not only with the outward, easy-to-describe symptoms, but also with the detachment that comes with severe depression. By the time Blair actually attempts to kill himself, you can understand it, even if you don't agree. Excellent and thought-provoking.
