Review:
Unless someone has written a fandom-defining classic in the last few months, I think it's safe to say that One Good Man is the best Nick/Greg story in the CSI fandom. Not only is it long and well written, but there is a level of realism to the story that you rarely see in fanfic, much less CSI fanfic. San Francisco is described like the writer has actually been there, homophobia is a fact of life, lab techs *do* make a lot more money than CSIs (which was even pointed out in *canon* and yet every fanfic author seems to think Greg must be living on ramen noodles and barely able to scrape together rent), the path to true love is not smooth, Nick and Greg aren't perfect, and while they try out just about every kind of sex imaginable, they are both gay and they both have a position preference (which are fortunately compatible). And yes, they do fall in love quickly, but then they have been friends for *years*. Toss in some intriguing back story on both characters (Greg has the worst -- and yet most hilarious -- parents *ever*), a really horrifying case (which, frankly, I'm shocked the show hasn't lifted yet), some angsty relationship conflicts, and you've got a fantastic story to add to your reread (over and over again) list.

I don't know if I've jumped in a said how much I love your recs. Not only am I rediscovering some old faves, but definitely indulging in some places I've only skimmed. A few months back I went on a big CSI kick but quite honestly gave up very shortly fairly disappointed with the relative redundancy involved with finding quality fics in the the fandom. I know they exist, it's just finding a reliable source of input outside of skimming every fandom related com./archive of everything until I hit a reliable author who will then hopefully link to others. Sadly it wasn't something I was up for at the time so it's good to see this rec, and can't wait for more from you. In all your fandoms.

Oh, man, you're telling me. There aren't actually going to be a lot of CSI recs simply because the general level of quality in CSI fic is appalling. Every once in a while I get a jones for Nick/Greg and I go fishing, but usually I end up not finding anything at all. Same thing for Monk -- heck, I've only found one story that was *readable*, and it certainly wasn't *recable*.

And I agree on finding a good source of input -- I watch quite a few reccing communities/journals, and none of them quite match my own taste. Lately, I've been finding that I wasn't happy with any of the recs I've been finding. Thus, Epic Recs:)

Glad you're enjoying my posts and thanks for the feedback!

Spoiler warning for One Good Man by geekwriter?
Hi!

Delurking for 2 reasons:

1. Thank you, Jane Elliot! for the lovely recs.

2. I'm currently watching CSI eps for the first time, and would like to read the story One Good Man. How far into the series is it approx placed? I don't want to be spoiled so I thought I would wait until I've caught up on the show before I begin to read. Was ut written around 2005? Thankful for any help.

Re: Spoiler warning for One Good Man by geekwriter?
1. Thank you!

2. Good question. The only spoiler I remember off the top of my head is from the end of season 3 (though, honestly, if you don't know about what happened to Greg at that point then you must be far better at avoiding spoilers than I was -- I knew before I even started watching the show!) There are also a couple of references to people's habits that I don't remember from the series, but that could be because I only made it through the third season and they were revealed after, or because I simply forgot. Definitely takes place before the fifth season finale. Does that help?

Re: Spoiler warning for One Good Man by geekwriter?
Thank you! That helps a lot. I am totally unspoiled concerning the 3rd seasons events and have no idea what happens to Greg. Thanks for not writing it now! I've just finished watching the 1st season and am moving through the 2nd at break-neck speed. Will probably start reading the story when I've watched the 3rd season and maybe a bit into the 4th or 5th.

Correction! I just started reading your description and realized, Hey, I've read this one. You're right, it's a good story and I liked it. But is it the best CSI I've read? Well, I still prefer some of [livejournal.com profile] evan_nicholas's stuff better; I think my problem here was that the characterization was stretched a bit by the length of the whole piece, and while good, it didn't keep me firmly believing all the facts the story tried to feed me. Sorry to be negative, it *is* a good story, really. I just wish it was *that little bit* different so it could be the best.

Hey, no worries. I would be *thrilled* to find a better Nick/Greg story in the CSI fandom (I'd be even more thrilled to find 100 better N/G stories:) On the other hand, length is a big factor in my enjoyment of a story, more so than with most people. I'll actually forgive a lot of a story is long enough and One Good Man is easily the longest CSI fic I've read.

BTW, your Eroica with Love friend? Is totally awesome:)

She's actually a friend of a friend, but yeah, totally awesome.

Have you read any Gil/Greg fics? I was thinking of which good long or at least long-ish CSI fics I liked, and none of the others are Nick/Greg... Nick/Gil, Greg/Gil, the three together... I dunno, I just never found enough good stuff to really like the pairing, I guess.

I tend to be pretty OTP-ish, but I welcome any and all attempts to change my OTP. In other words, bring on the recs!

CSI recs, OMG
I can't believe I've just open a good dozen of stories looking a *good* one, and none were it. I think the word I'm looking for is bullcrap when it comes to describing most of my recent and semi-recent reads - please excuse my french.

Anyways, thankfully the wing!fic was easily recognizible: Fly Away (http://mistokath13.livejournal.com/36939.html) by [livejournal.com profile] mistokath13, NC-17, Don/Danny, Danny/Mac, Mac/Don and the threesome together as well, I think. Despite Mac being present in the pairing(s) (he's my pet squick in pairings) I can still rec this with a clear conscience. It's set in an AU world where winged folk are second class citizens, and things go awry when one of the team manifests late in life... You know the familiar drill; h/c, slave/owner issues, twu vuw, threesome-wrangling, etc. I was surprised, honestly surprised by how good this was. Of course, it wasn't on any of the comms I frequent, so that might be its secret. ;-)

Next, fics that don't suck. Hunh. Let's start with authors:

[livejournal.com profile] nekosmuse stands out as one of the authors whose Nick/Greg fics I actually braved more than once (I might have mentioned I'm not too crazy about the pairing. No? Ooops), albeit the fics were short. Still. Try Something Like Instinct (http://www.livejournal.com/community/nickngreg/3055.html) (the only fic I have a link to at the moment) and see if you like.

Caroline Crane (http://desiderium.slashcity.net/) is another decent one (what shining praise! *g*); I suspect you already know her as I think you have her "All the Way to Paris" recced. Still. Readable and fun, I suppose.

[livejournal.com profile] evan_nicholas (god, I hope I'm getting that underscore right!), whom I can't rec enough. Bunch of his older Greg-pairing fics were here (http://www.geocities.com/gregslash/evannicholasindex.html); if the link works, just wade in. I mean it. "Those Who Wish Us Well" is the awesomest Gil/Greg past Greg/Nick fic ever; some Nick!bashing, but it's for a good cause. The threesomes are tres good, "Vanilla Coward" has both Nick and Greg gay, just not for each other, etc, etc. And oh! I just quickly re-read "Roadside Attraction", Gil/Greg pre-slash, Greg POV, and if you like/need a quick Gil and Greg kick, you'll love it. Because Evan has a great Greg (and Gil, in other fics) voice, and he makes you believe these things could happen between scenes on the show.

One-off fic recs, mostly:

Silk, Silk, Silk (http://chance.popullus.net/csislash/stories/silk.html) by Anne Higgins, Gil/Nick, established relationship with amnesia twist; Gil forgets being involved with Nick. Angst, angst, hurt/comfort, angst, resolutions; again, you know the drill. Still, I love this author's older stories which are on her old site.

Less and More (http://www.livejournal.com/community/grisslash/3825.html) by [livejournal.com profile] laurelgardner, R, Gil/Greg, Greg takes Gil home to meet his parents. (If you like end up liking her stuff, or just want to check out the long future!fic series, her CSI stories are here (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=grisslash&keyword=laurelgardner&filter=all).)

I cannot believe I'm about to rec something out of the Pit... and a WIP (last I saw) at that! But Decisions (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2118837/1/Decisions) by Chapin was something I liked; Gil/Greg, with looks into Gil's past, some angst, plot and stuff.
ETA: seems the fic got a sequel while I wasn't looking, Indecisions (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4093464/1/Indecisions). Oh well, I'm due for a re-read anyway... *headdesk at the number of chapters. ON THE PIT.*

On the off-chance you'd care to see a Jim-pairing, here's part 5 (http://www.livejournal.com/community/csi_slash/47432.html) of [livejournal.com profile] slashmommy's JiGr-verse, with links and summaries to previous parts. Jim/Gil, Jim/Greg. Yes, that's Jim Brass. ...What?

And it really is 2am so I better hunt down links for these and go to bed.

Last minute no-link additions: "Boxing the Compass" by Janissa, NC-17 Gil/Nick and "Nothing But What We Somehow Chose" by assette, Gil/Nick, Dallas!Nick AU.

Re: CSI recs, OMG
OMG, you are very, very awesome:) Thank you!

And what a great (and apt) name for ff.net! I don't have internet at home, so I have to download stories to read later and I can definitively say that ff.net has one of the worst downloading interfaces on the net. I've gotten to the point that if there are a certain number of chapters or more (the number varies by fandom, but it's pretty low for any fandom with an archive elsewhere) I just won't read it. Probably I'm missing good stories this way, but my wrist (with its burgeoning carpal tunnel syndrom) thanks me.

Re: CSI recs, OMG
Re: the Pit and it's awful, horrible fic interface - I hate it as well. The only reason I put up with WraithBait is the 'whole story' function, which spits out all the chapters in one file (if the author is generous enough not to devide the parts into series instead of chapters *grumble*). I also read off-line 90% of the time, so I know where you're coming from.

But! There is now a solution for the Pit dl => a fic downloader! (http://www.home-eisele.de/downloader_e.php) which works on the pit, as well.

Also, yeah, I love calling ff.net that; I actually caught the bad habit from [livejournal.com profile] badfic_quotes where the Pit is a regularly featured occurence, and source of many a good badfic quote. Hey, silver linings and all that.

Re: CSI recs, OMG
*flails* This is the most awesome program ever! (If only I had this two weeks ago when I downloaded 153 files of Bones fic (i.e., seven stories) by hand.)

Thank you for the link!

(Wraithbait is, unfortunately, getting on my last nerve. It's obviously using a version of efiction, but for some reason hasn't upgraded to the version with a working search engine, grr. The whole story function, however, is a lifesaver.)
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 09:28 pm (UTC)
I've actually asked about the WraithBait's kinks and snags, and one of the mods said they've already re-written so much of the original code to make it usable *this much* that doing the same all over again with the next, also very imperfect, version of eFiction would take more time and effort than they have (in their lifetimes, presumable, as I've heard of eFiction and just how un-user-friendly it can really get).

I've finally broken down and downloaded the program as well (and yeah, I was downloading a 40-part Eroica/Doctor Who crossover a few months ago just out of spite, with a long-suffering I-don't-need-no-Pit-friendly-program attitude) since stubborness does not an easier net experience make.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 09:30 pm (UTC)
Huh. I was hoping to use eFiction myself some day. This does not make me hopeful. Still, if they know enough to rewrite the code, you'd think they could redo the search engine (she says supported by her utter ignorance of the subject...)

Well, I use the AutomatedArchive, and a newer, better&bigger version is in the progress of being made, which is promised to be update-compatible with the old AAs, so if you need an archive (and hey, I have one to give away, actually) I think AA is a safer bet. It's written in Perl which is at least half-comprehensible, not too perfect but good enough. DSA and SSA use it, and I always loved those archives. No frills, just the fics, in a nice easy layout. Just like archives should be. :-)
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 09:39 pm (UTC)
That sounds lovely:) I actually love DSA's layout (which reminds me a lot of 852 Prospect, which is my favorite archive ever).

And what do you mean you're giving away an archive?
[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 09:48 pm (UTC)
Go here => http://sba.thekipple.net
A month or two ago I finally made an new archive in hopes it would be the new home for Sorority Boys fics; after a month, and zero uploads, I decided to close it down.

So, if you have a site and are willing to take my grilling on what/how/where you want, I can set it up for you. Or let you do the setting up yourself; whichever applies. If you don't have webspace I might be talked into hosting it for you, as I don't really use my site much, but that requires detailed negotiations and such.

If you want to play around with the archive - like I said, it's using the AutomatedArchive (AA) interface, just like 852 Prospect as well :-) - I can turn it back on so you can do test uploads and stuff, as it's empty now and turned off.

To see a functional newest version AA, try my tSFAMA => http://spander.thekipple.net
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

Actually, Sorority Boys fic would be right at home at the archive I want to create. Mainly I want a multi-fandom archive for any fandom that does not have an archive of its own and/or all of its fandom archives restrict their content. I've found a few other multi-fandom archives out there, but they're all dominated by Harry Potter fic and, besides, they aren't well known. Apparently I have a gift for pimping:)

Ahem. So, grill away!

Unfortunately the second link you posted didn't work for me, so I'll just ask: is this an archive that only accepts completed files, or is there a chapter function (without making each chapter a new story)?

[identity profile] debris_k.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 27th, 2008 11:45 pm (UTC)
Oops, brain is lagging again - that's http://spanderfiles.thekipple.net

And this type of archive doesn't have the chapters option, or a unified author's info page.

Basically, the max it can give is something like the archive *now correctly* linked above.

Let me know if you're still interested, if you have your own webspace or not, and I'll email you some details tomorrow if we're on this.

But I have to say, a multifandom archive? Aren't there too many of those out there already? Just MHO.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Mar. 28th, 2008 03:14 pm (UTC)
That link works, thanks. And I rather like the idea that the archive doesn't have a chapters option, as one of the best parts of 852 Prospect is that all of the stories are complete (theoretically, anyway:)

I have someone willing to host, but that was when I was thinking of an e-fiction archive. I'll run this past her and see what she thinks.

As for the multifandom part of the archive, well. I have a few thoughts on that (and beware, this is going to get a bit long, as I spent a lot of time thinking about this last night:)

I tend to create new comms/websites/stories to meet personal desires that I'm not seeing met elsewhere. Often times there are comms/sites/stories that are close to what I'm looking for, but not exactly what I want and IMHO, there's no such thing as too many comms/sites/stories (as long as folks are willing to put the effort into maintaining and/or creating).

Disclaimer aside, I've come across quite a few multifandom archives since I got back into fandom a few years ago and I have issues with just about all of them. For example, WWOMB is sluggish (honestly, it can literally take five minutes to load a story), is overwhelmed by HP stories, and has an awkward, inefficent search interface. The Archive at the End of the Universe (?) has a design that makes my eyes ache, doesn't include vital information in its story headers (especially warnings and story length), and doesn't always print well, depending on how its authors upload their stories (and is also overwhelmed by HP fic). FF.net -- you know how I feel about that:) Adult ff.net has the same miserable interface as ff.net, with the added frustration of an electronic age checker. Slash Cotillian doesn't have the story as a single file option. Yuletide...actually, Yuletide is pretty close to perfect, except that they only accept stories written specifically for Yuletide (they use AA too, I think).

Along with issues with many multifandom archives, I also have issues with some fandom-specific archives, especially those that are really just forums (like the archive for MacGyver) or which restrict the content of archives stories (also like MacGyver and the Psych archive) or which are password protected (apparently this is becoming more and more common). I want all authors to have a place to archive their stories no matter what they write (and, more personally, I want readers to be able to find all the fic in a fandom in one place where they can be downloaded as a single file:)

Finally, most multifandom archives aren't very well known. I personally think that's because of the issues I've stated above; I firmly believe that a well-maintained, easily used archive for small fandoms could become very popular as well as be a great resource for fandom in general.

Ahem. All of that said, I was kind of hoping for a technical advisor:) I'm happy and willing to do all of the day-to-day stuff involved in maintaining an archive (not to mention all the grunt work involved in the initial setup), but I have no familiarity at all with Perl. Would you be interested? Hopefully it wouldn't take too much time -- I am a quick learner.

Thanks!

I will email you a bunch of archive-related stuff later today, possibly tomorrow. Speed, I'm not so good at.

In the meantime, Evan finally got a website for his fics, here (http://www.evan-nics-fics.com/); although it lacks pairings mentions it does have all his CSI stuff from what I could see, so now you have no excuse not go, read, and then report to me if I have any right to be reccing/fangirling him all over the place, or not. ;-)
