Unless someone has written a fandom-defining classic in the last few months, I think it's safe to say that One Good Man is the best Nick/Greg story in the CSI fandom. Not only is it long and well written, but there is a level of realism to the story that you rarely see in fanfic, much less CSI fanfic. San Francisco is described like the writer has actually been there, homophobia is a fact of life, lab techs *do* make a lot more money than CSIs (which was even pointed out in *canon* and yet every fanfic author seems to think Greg must be living on ramen noodles and barely able to scrape together rent), the path to true love is not smooth, Nick and Greg aren't perfect, and while they try out just about every kind of sex imaginable, they are both gay and they both have a position preference (which are fortunately compatible). And yes, they do fall in love quickly, but then they have been friends for *years*. Toss in some intriguing back story on both characters (Greg has the worst -- and yet most hilarious -- parents *ever*), a really horrifying case (which, frankly, I'm shocked the show hasn't lifted yet), some angsty relationship conflicts, and you've got a fantastic story to add to your reread (over and over again) list.

And I agree on finding a good source of input -- I watch quite a few reccing communities/journals, and none of them quite match my own taste. Lately, I've been finding that I wasn't happy with any of the recs I've been finding. Thus, Epic Recs:)
Glad you're enjoying my posts and thanks for the feedback!
Delurking for 2 reasons:
1. Thank you, Jane Elliot! for the lovely recs.
2. I'm currently watching CSI eps for the first time, and would like to read the story One Good Man. How far into the series is it approx placed? I don't want to be spoiled so I thought I would wait until I've caught up on the show before I begin to read. Was ut written around 2005? Thankful for any help.
2. Good question. The only spoiler I remember off the top of my head is from the end of season 3 (though, honestly, if you don't know about what happened to Greg at that point then you must be far better at avoiding spoilers than I was -- I knew before I even started watching the show!) There are also a couple of references to people's habits that I don't remember from the series, but that could be because I only made it through the third season and they were revealed after, or because I simply forgot. Definitely takes place before the fifth season finale. Does that help?
BTW, your Eroica with Love friend? Is totally awesome:)
Have you read any Gil/Greg fics? I was thinking of which good long or at least long-ish CSI fics I liked, and none of the others are Nick/Greg... Nick/Gil, Greg/Gil, the three together... I dunno, I just never found enough good stuff to really like the pairing, I guess.
Anyways, thankfully the wing!fic was easily recognizible: Fly Away (http://mistokath13.livejournal.com/36939.html) by
Next, fics that don't suck. Hunh. Let's start with authors:
Caroline Crane (http://desiderium.slashcity.net/) is another decent one (what shining praise! *g*); I suspect you already know her as I think you have her "All the Way to Paris" recced. Still. Readable and fun, I suppose.
One-off fic recs, mostly:
Silk, Silk, Silk (http://chance.popullus.net/csislash/stories/silk.html) by Anne Higgins, Gil/Nick, established relationship with amnesia twist; Gil forgets being involved with Nick. Angst, angst, hurt/comfort, angst, resolutions; again, you know the drill. Still, I love this author's older stories which are on her old site.
Less and More (http://www.livejournal.com/community/grisslash/3825.html) by
I cannot believe I'm about to rec something out of the Pit... and a WIP (last I saw) at that! But Decisions (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2118837/1/Decisions) by Chapin was something I liked; Gil/Greg, with looks into Gil's past, some angst, plot and stuff.
ETA: seems the fic got a sequel while I wasn't looking, Indecisions (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4093464/1/Indecisions). Oh well, I'm due for a re-read anyway... *headdesk at the number of chapters. ON THE PIT.*
On the off-chance you'd care to see a Jim-pairing, here's part 5 (http://www.livejournal.com/community/csi_slash/47432.html) of
And it really is 2am so I better hunt down links for these and go to bed.
Last minute no-link additions: "Boxing the Compass" by Janissa, NC-17 Gil/Nick and "Nothing But What We Somehow Chose" by assette, Gil/Nick, Dallas!Nick AU.
And what a great (and apt) name for ff.net! I don't have internet at home, so I have to download stories to read later and I can definitively say that ff.net has one of the worst downloading interfaces on the net. I've gotten to the point that if there are a certain number of chapters or more (the number varies by fandom, but it's pretty low for any fandom with an archive elsewhere) I just won't read it. Probably I'm missing good stories this way, but my wrist (with its burgeoning carpal tunnel syndrom) thanks me.
But! There is now a solution for the Pit dl => a fic downloader! (http://www.home-eisele.de/downloader_e.php) which works on the pit, as well.
Also, yeah, I love calling ff.net that; I actually caught the bad habit from
Thank you for the link!
(Wraithbait is, unfortunately, getting on my last nerve. It's obviously using a version of efiction, but for some reason hasn't upgraded to the version with a working search engine, grr. The whole story function, however, is a lifesaver.)
I've finally broken down and downloaded the program as well (and yeah, I was downloading a 40-part Eroica/Doctor Who crossover a few months ago just out of spite, with a long-suffering I-don't-need-no-Pit-friendly-program attitude) since stubborness does not an easier net experience make.
And what do you mean you're giving away an archive?
A month or two ago I finally made an new archive in hopes it would be the new home for Sorority Boys fics; after a month, and zero uploads, I decided to close it down.
So, if you have a site and are willing to take my grilling on what/how/where you want, I can set it up for you. Or let you do the setting up yourself; whichever applies. If you don't have webspace I might be talked into hosting it for you, as I don't really use my site much, but that requires detailed negotiations and such.
If you want to play around with the archive - like I said, it's using the AutomatedArchive (AA) interface, just like 852 Prospect as well :-) - I can turn it back on so you can do test uploads and stuff, as it's empty now and turned off.
To see a functional newest version AA, try my tSFAMA => http://spander.thekipple.net
Ahem. So, grill away!
Unfortunately the second link you posted didn't work for me, so I'll just ask: is this an archive that only accepts completed files, or is there a chapter function (without making each chapter a new story)?
And this type of archive doesn't have the chapters option, or a unified author's info page.
Basically, the max it can give is something like the archive *now correctly* linked above.
Let me know if you're still interested, if you have your own webspace or not, and I'll email you some details tomorrow if we're on this.
But I have to say, a multifandom archive? Aren't there too many of those out there already? Just MHO.
I have someone willing to host, but that was when I was thinking of an e-fiction archive. I'll run this past her and see what she thinks.
As for the multifandom part of the archive, well. I have a few thoughts on that (and beware, this is going to get a bit long, as I spent a lot of time thinking about this last night:)
I tend to create new comms/websites/stories to meet personal desires that I'm not seeing met elsewhere. Often times there are comms/sites/stories that are close to what I'm looking for, but not exactly what I want and IMHO, there's no such thing as too many comms/sites/stories (as long as folks are willing to put the effort into maintaining and/or creating).
Disclaimer aside, I've come across quite a few multifandom archives since I got back into fandom a few years ago and I have issues with just about all of them. For example, WWOMB is sluggish (honestly, it can literally take five minutes to load a story), is overwhelmed by HP stories, and has an awkward, inefficent search interface. The Archive at the End of the Universe (?) has a design that makes my eyes ache, doesn't include vital information in its story headers (especially warnings and story length), and doesn't always print well, depending on how its authors upload their stories (and is also overwhelmed by HP fic). FF.net -- you know how I feel about that:) Adult ff.net has the same miserable interface as ff.net, with the added frustration of an electronic age checker. Slash Cotillian doesn't have the story as a single file option. Yuletide...actually, Yuletide is pretty close to perfect, except that they only accept stories written specifically for Yuletide (they use AA too, I think).
Along with issues with many multifandom archives, I also have issues with some fandom-specific archives, especially those that are really just forums (like the archive for MacGyver) or which restrict the content of archives stories (also like MacGyver and the Psych archive) or which are password protected (apparently this is becoming more and more common). I want all authors to have a place to archive their stories no matter what they write (and, more personally, I want readers to be able to find all the fic in a fandom in one place where they can be downloaded as a single file:)
Finally, most multifandom archives aren't very well known. I personally think that's because of the issues I've stated above; I firmly believe that a well-maintained, easily used archive for small fandoms could become very popular as well as be a great resource for fandom in general.
Ahem. All of that said, I was kind of hoping for a technical advisor:) I'm happy and willing to do all of the day-to-day stuff involved in maintaining an archive (not to mention all the grunt work involved in the initial setup), but I have no familiarity at all with Perl. Would you be interested? Hopefully it wouldn't take too much time -- I am a quick learner.
Thanks!
In the meantime, Evan finally got a website for his fics, here (http://www.evan-nics-fics.com/); although it lacks pairings mentions it does have all his CSI stuff from what I could see, so now you have no excuse not go, read, and then report to me if I have any right to be reccing/fangirling him all over the place, or not. ;-)
Ooo, and I see he's written a House fic, too! Thanks!
