Review:
Even in Wonderland, fairytales haven't come true in a long time. Alice and Hatter face their Happy Ever After.

This fic turned out to be one of those stories I never knew I wanted until after I finished reading it. Simple and to the point, it explores what life is like after the happily-ever-after in the mini-series, with Alice and Hatter both taking mostly stumbling steps towards their own happy-ending. Though relatively short, every scene in this fic has an impact, driving home the fact that even though their story has all the elements it needs to be a fairytale, it isn’t…and sometimes that’s better.

Alice undertakes a journey at the end of the movie and on the boat she find herself thrown together with a sailor who looks and acts suspiciously like a certain maker of hats. All of Underland seems determined to make sure Alice finds happiness with this sailor but for her part, Alice has never been one to accept a substitution.

This is the first fic I read in the Burton's Alice in Wonderland fandom and thus far it's by far the best. The writing is lyrical and very reminiscent of the movie, Alice is beautifully in character, the voices of all of the other characters (which include cameos from just about everyone on the side of good) are spectacularly done, and the premise is perfect. A lovely tale of Alice finding herself and deciding exactly what (and who) she wants.

Author's Summary: Once upon a time, there was a man called Hatter. Once upon a time, he had a story to tell.

Review: I’m a sucker for character backstory, and this one is done particularly well. This author goes to great pains to put together a past for Hatter that makes sense, coalescing beautifully over fifteen chapters to create a complete picture. It’s sensitive and creative and just GORGEOUS.

One critique I have is that I wish she’d spent just as much time exploring Hatter as he fell in love with Alice – we spend so much of this fic exploring who he was before he met her, and it would have been nice to re-explore the "original" story a little deeper with that new perspective. However, the conclusion definitely makes up for it, and on the whole it’s an extremely satisfying read. I’d recommend it to pretty much anyone. ^_^

Title: The Price of Tea
Author: [livejournal.com profile] randombattlecry
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Alice (Syfy)
Pairing: Alice/Hatter, also featuring the Mad Hatter (Carroll-verse)
Category/genres: Pre-canon, post-canon, romance, introspection
Length: Medium (4,527)
Warnings: none

Author's Summary: Alice is a legend, a story, a history book, a puzzle. Hatter's trying to put the pieces together.

Review: Again, [livejournal.com profile] randombattlecry knocks it out of the park. My favorite part about her writing in this fandom is the way she interweaves Alice canon with Carrol’s original canon, and this story is an excellent example of that talent. Hatter’s conversations with his Mad grandfather are simply brilliant, nonsensical and yet wise. The way she alludes to Hatter’s and Alice’s growing romance is also well done, subtle in some places and intense in others. This is a FANTASTIC read. ^_^
