Review:
Right off the bat, I have to say that I'm not really a 'High School Musical' fan. I've only seen the first two movies once, have no real desire to see the third, and only read stories for it once in a blue moon. The fact that I’m reccing this should be a good indicator to just how much I enjoyed not only the writing but the storyline, which might have been better served as an original story but still manages to incorporate a good deal of HSM canon. A feat, in and of itself, considering the fact that all the characters are now in the early 30s and are living very separate and different lives, with the exception of Troy and Gabrielle (who seem to be joined at the hip despite not being in a relationship anymore).
Written before the release of the third movie, this story explores how much time and circumstance can change a person, even a person as deeply selfish and self-centered as Sharpay Evans, and makes them evolve into someone that is not only passionate about life but about the work they do. In Sharpay’s case, it’s working as an AIDs relief worker in Africa, and is surprisingly in character once you learn her story. The romance between Sharpay and Troy is, I’ll admit, a bit campy at times but still very sweet and not as exaggerated as it could be. If you want a feel-good story that delves into life outside and beyond the HSM world, I definitely suggest giving this a try.

Some of the best “High School Musical” fics are those that manage to convey the utter confusion, despair and delight that being a teenager can bring. “Boy Disease” certainly fits that category. It’s about Chad and Ryan and how their friendship develops into more, but it’s also about growing up and apart from those you’ve known all your life, being confused about who you are, hurting for not having what you want. It’s about misunderstandings, friends who are loyal (and those who screw up without really meaning to) and how being in love can be utterly glorious and yet at the same time incredibly heart wrenching.
