Review:
Fair warning for CSI fans: Nick and Greg do show up in this fic, but it's not until about two-thirds of the way through and they only hang around for a few pages. Trust me, though, it's worth the wait. This fic is what turned me on to Nick/Greg (and the entire CSI fandom) in the first place.

The Smallville CSI fic, featuring Lex, Clark, Chloe, Lois, Whitney, and Perry (with cameos by Lana, and the Kents). In this universe, a near-suicidal Lex was saved at the river by Jonathan, instead of Clark. That good deed was enough to cause Lex to break with his father and find his own path in life, working in the DNA lab of the Metropolis CSI unit. Unfortunately, his past comes back to haunt him when Dominic Senatori turns up dead and the resulting investigation turns up evidence of a massive child prostitution/pornography ring. Senatori's first victim: Lex. Fortunately Lex finds support in his growing relationship with Clark, and in his friendship with his co-works.

Thankfully, Kat manages to handle a very dark subject matter in such a way as to communicate the seriousness of the crime without making the story too painful to read. Couple that with some excellent characterization and a great plot and you have a wonderful, engaging story.

What a great rec. I was going to pass on the story but after reading the rec, I'm gonna print it out at read it later at home. Thanks for suggesting it.

Was it the warning that first turned you off? If so, I can sympathize. My non-con and/or abuse tolerance level is near zero, so if I managed to get through it, I promise it's not too awful.

Hope you enjoy the story as much as I did!

I've just never really gotten into CSI (though I see the slash and the pretty and I do like the show) and I've gotten over the "exciting and new" feeling about Smallville. So I was just "eh". then I read the rec and I'm curious to see how it goes now.

CSI is hard to get into, mainly because the bulk of the fanfic is written by people who have get to grasp the basic of grammar or spelling. It's a pity, though, because when they get it right it's actually quite good.

Smallville is one of my past fandoms; if it didn't have its own archive (something that most new fandoms *desperately need*), I probably wouldn't be reccing nearly as much in it as I am. As it is, I only have a few more stories to rec (nearly all of them by astolat, though there are one or two more by Kat), and then I'm out, because there isn't much new in Smallville these days (I blame the crappy canon...)

Hi! I kinda was going through your tags and found this rec. LOVED IT! Despite not being a Supes fan. (I'm a Batman fangirl.) Anyhoo I read it and then went to that author's site and found a sequel, or follow up that revolves around Greg and Nick here. (http://www.caffiends.net/viewstory.php?sid=161) I've just started reading so I don't know how good it is but I thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to read more about Greg being poisoned and all.

Sweet, thank you! I'd actually thought that the arsenic poisoning was canon until I watched nearly all of CSI canon looking for it:)

You're welcome. I read the Clex one first and there was some gaps in there with how Greg did so I got curious and though you would be too.

I certainly was and I'm quite happy that you did the legwork for me -- I tend to tiptoe around Kat's site as her and Perryvic's kinks generally coincide with my squicks:)

I get that. Yeah, that fic aside from the whole child porn ring wasn't too squickworthy. I tried one though that had Grissom pregnant and I'm sorry that's so wrong.

Their Smallville stories are about 50% on my squick-o-meter. I've learned not to touch their SGA fics with a ten foot pole...

Pregnant Grissom? *shudder*

Yeah, I just got squicked out myself. Captured!Doggie!Grissom. Gads. I was wondering why I didn't read a lot from that site and now I know why.

Late commenting, referred here from your rant about the companion story, but I read what looks like a pure Smallville version of the story here (http://www.caffiends.net/viewstory.php?sid=300). Don't know if it's going to be of any interest to you though.

Heh. I can't actually access that link at work, but I suspect it goes to SuperGlue, which is recced here: http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/31215.html

I have to admit that I did prefer the Smallville-only version of the story, not only because of it's more focused storyline, but also because Perryvic manages to tone down Kat's dark side a bit and produce fics that are less dark for darkness's sake.

Yes, Superglue. Hadn't realised you'd already recced it.

Trust me, I understand -- these days I have to check the memories before I write a rec, just to be on the safe side:)
