RR -- Crossover

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 9:28 AM
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, folks! It's crossover week here at [livejournal.com profile] epic_recs and it's your (and our) chance to introduce your fellow fanfic reader to stories that 'combine as much fandom love in one shot as possible'. How many fandoms can you really fit into one fic? The more the merrier, of course ;p

 Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one)
-Crossover fics recced in the past can be found HERE.

That said, have at it!

While I do already have a Crossovers recs page (http://mayitbe.co.uk/crossovers/), I suppose I could pick out a few to rec here. I suppose I'm picking out not so much my favourites as ones that are a bit unusual, that people may not have read. There's masses more on my list that I fully recommend you try, though...

Things I Can Depend On (http://oriolegirl.livejournal.com/575613.html) by Oriolegirl
Torchwood x Stargate Atlantis
I like it because... I'm biased as it's based on my prompt. Also, I love crossover fics where characters from different fandoms are related.

Saving Jade (http://azarsuerte.livejournal.com/360891.html) by Azar
Doctor Who x Dragonriders of Pern
I like it because... It's sweet and works perfectly; most crossover fics feel a bit forced, but this doesn't at all.

Jack Bristow at the Edge of Reason (http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/aliasfic/TheEdgeOfReason.htm) by Yahtzee
Alias x Bridget Jones's Diary
I like it because... It's a unique combination of fandoms, and Yahtzee is one of my very favourite fanfiction authors whatever fandom she's writing in.

An Equal Temper (http://carlyinrome.livejournal.com/336246.html) by Lamia Archer
Angel x Bones
I like it because... It's beautiful and bittersweet and perfectly written.

An Accurate Mind (http://www.altogetherelsewhere.net/multiverse/2007/anaccuratemind.html) by Mara Greengrass
Firefly x Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
I like it because... I love fics about River Tam, and I love Hitchhiker's Guide, so this was a good match.

Oddly, I haven't included any House crossovers, and I love House crossovers. There's some on my recs list though...

I still haven't managed to find anyone to write my HousexAngel bunny though where House tries to diagnose Cordy's vision-migraines... oh well. Maybe one day!

Thank you for the links! I just finished the TW X SGA one; it's brilliant. Not something I would have looked for normally, but I'm glad you rec'd it. :)

I love House crossovers, though a lot of them tend to begin with: and House was asked to treat another 'special patient/case'...

You're welcome. I love the idea of Jack having adult children from his long life. I've posted different versions of the idea as prompts in a few TW challenges, and I really enjoyed reading Oriolegirl's take on the concept. Did you read the accompanying fic from Ianto's POV?

Yeah, a lot of House crossovers are like that, but not all. On my recs page, for instance, there's a CSI crossover by Teenwitch where House is a murder suspect...

Yes, I did. Loved it. I never thought that it would be interesting to read about Jack's adult children, but now you've got me hooked... I hope more people will take up your prompts :)

Will definitely give the House as a murder suspect a try (but House/Cameron? Seriously?).

Ponders... I'm not sure why, but I always loved Grissom/Sara but could never understand House/Cameron. Sara and Cameron are quite similar in many ways, it's just I can't see House putting up with Cameron whereas Grissom has...more patience?

I don't think any list of epic crossovers would be complete without Martha Wilson & Kimberley Rector's When Hellmouths Collide (http://www.ltljverse.com/index2.htm).

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys/BtVS crossover, over a megabyte long. Despite sounding like it should never work in a million years, it somehow does, brilliantly.

Death and the Definately-Not-A-Maiden (http://community.livejournal.com/dw_cross/18125.html) by anonymous (posted to [livejournal.com profile] dw_cross for the 2008 ficathon)
Fandoms: Torchwood/Dr.Who and Discworld
(For some reason, the character of Death and Captain Jack Harkness have this amazingly adorable chemistry together. For example,
That was the last he saw of Death for a few days. But Jack rarely stayed out of trouble for long.
IT IS A NICE DAY. THERE IS LITTLE RAIN.
“What?”
I BELIEVE ACQUAINTANCES ARE SUPPOSED TO EXCHANGE PLEASANTRIES.
Jack found it hard to concentrate after waking up from that one. How did you make small talk with the Grim Reaper?

and,
Jack was awful at chess, and didn't particularly get much better over the course of 1800 years. He wasn't a sore loser, but he did worry aloud to Death that all the practice he was giving him meant that the next person who challenged Death to chess would have the odds stacked against them.
THEY ALWAYS DO. I AM VERY GOOD AT CHESS.

This fic is amazing, and I can really believe, at the end of it, that if they ever met, that Jack Harkness and Death would interact this way if they met.)

California Dreaming (http://daegaer.livejournal.com/19996.html) by [livejournal.com profile] daegaer
Fandoms: Buffy and Good Omens
([livejournal.com profile] daegaer is a great author, and this is one of my favorites. Sadly, I haven't seen a single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of their portrayal, but the characterization of Crowley in this, for me at least, is spot-on. He isn't a martyr, but he's a good, well, not-person who loves his job, but doesn't particularly like the downsides of it (ie the Overzealous Forces of Good)
The blonde girl elbowed Crowley in the stomach. He was definitely surprised by that. She ran over to her friends, and he contented himself with sauntering over to Aziraphale.
“Hi,” he said casually. “Nice timing.”
It wasn’t that he was hiding behind the angel, he told himself. He was guarding Aziraphale’s back. At least until he was sure they hadn’t got any more holy water.

Aziraphale is also adorable in this too.
“All right, I’m a wizard,” Aziraphale said loudly. “And this – is my familiar spirit.”
Crowley looked at him in deep annoyance.
“Yeah? Well -,”
“Be silent, I command you,” Aziraphale said, trying to suppress a smile. “He’s not a bad fellow, but he does tend to go on a bit. Rupert, a word with you, if you please."
)

A Vision in Scarlet (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Scarlet.html) by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
Fandoms: the Dead Zone and the life of Arthur Conan Doyle (does it even count as a crossover?)
(I haven't seen this story recc'd very much, and it's a pity, because, like all of Speranza's stuff, it's a really awesome story. It's a plausible crossover between two events that are set 100+ years between each other, and that's an accomplishment in and of itself. But it also explores the fact that Arthur Conan Doyle, while he popularized the "rational solution to every mystery", he was also a spiritualist who believed in the afterlife and magic.
Conan Doyle is two steps ahead of him, out of his chair and appealing to Bruce with outstretched hands. "Please, sir; don't go. We are in desperate need of your assistance."
See? Johnny wants to say to Bruce. Even Conan Doyle's with the program. "What can we do to help?" Johnny asks.
"A child is missing," Conan Doyle says desperately, and this seems to push the pale woman past her limits. She crumples to the floor, apparently passing out. "Doctor, please!" the other woman calls, and Doyle rushes to her. He dispatches someone for smelling salts and someone else for water, and while his attention is divided, Johnny seizes the moment to have a quick word with Bruce
)

Upon a Fiery Steed (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1792282/1/Upon_A_Fiery_Steed) at ff.net by Vathara
Stargate SG-1 x Gundam Wing
It's one of the most unusual crossovers I've ever read that the author took seriously and managed to pull off. Vathara brought the anime characters and their very intricate political setting into the SG-1 universe just after SG-1 met up with Nirrti. The giant robots and other anime stuff that doesn't work in real time didn't make it into the story. Cheesy sci-fi action with some yaoi/slash in it. Usual SG1/GW OTPs. I love it, but honestly, I'm easily pleased with sci-fi action.

Foreign Territory (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=9778) by Macx_Larabee
Stargate Atlantis x Magnificent 7 (eventually)
Slash McShep
I like this one because John's brush with ancient tech turns him into a horse like creature and it makes for some interesting angst.

Lovely (http://www.skeeter63.org/~soulcake/lovely.html) by Martha
Stargate SG-1 x The Sentinel
Slash
I thought it was an interesting look into Daniel's character after his problem with Shifu's Dream. Martha has him on the run from the NID and he runs into Blair at the Library in Cascade.

I just wish it had more Mag 7 in it than it does, but they've got a decent amount of story time in the back half. It's pretty heavy on the McShep. It's the story that introduced me to the Magnificent 7, actually. I missed the TV thing entirely and the only Mag7 I knew had Yul Brenner as Chris in it, which was just grossssssss!

oh god if you want crossover epics you gotta check out pretty much everything written by Voracity. Most of it is Buffy-centric (usually focussing on Xander) but it crosses over with pretty much every fandom you can think of.

Her monster epic (that is still ongoing) is Demon Criminal Investigative Services (DCIS) found at

she has tons of others there as well but set aside several days (weeks!) to get through them all.

Part 1! :D
Oh, crossovers are my favorite. So I have lots of links, although I've tried to whittle them down some. Longer fics (i.e., at least 10k words) marked with a *. (I also second the recs for When Hellmouths Collide, Death and the Definitely-Not-a-Maiden, Upon a Fiery Steed, the Summer House/Shore Leave/Sabbatical trilogy, and Calling All Cops and Autobots above.)

Seven Times Dean Winchester Didn't Kill a Fugly (And the Two Times He Did) by [livejournal.com profile] silverruffian - Supernatural/various - Dean, Sam - Has Dean and Sam crossover into several different fandoms, including Bewitched and Sesame Street. Very much crack, but that's how I like my Supernatural fic.

Can't Stop the Turtle by [livejournal.com profile] roga - Discworld/Firefly - ensemble - It's a Discworld crossover, thus guaranteed to be funny if it's any good (which this is).

The Fortune-Teller by Hth - Buffy/Firefly - Kaylee/Tara - Tara joins the Serenity crew in order to help River with her mind-reading. This is nicely sweet.

*Geniuses by Amaretto - Calvin and Hobbes/Foxtrot - Calvin/Jason - Calvin and Jason meet while at college. Nice, fun, works surprisingly well. There are also other stories, some by Amaretto and some by others.

Apples by [livejournal.com profile] 20thcenturyvole - Discworld/Firefly - Shadowfax, Death - It's got Shadowfax and Death, what more do you need?

Untitled by Louise Lux - Good Omens/Star Trek TNG - Crowley/Lwaxana Troi - Crowley and Aziraphale meet Lwaxana. Personally, I think there should be oodles of crossovers where people get to meet Lwaxana just because she has such a strong, out there personality.

Hitching a Ride by Meltha - Buffy/Firefly - Jayne/Harmony - Jayne smuggles Harmony on board. Fun!

I Hear the Rotors Still by [livejournal.com profile] blinkytreefrog - M.A.S.H./Marvel comics - Radar - Interesting and a little creppy, in a good way.

*The Room with a Computer by Minisinoo - Harry Potter/X-Men - Cyclops, HP ensemble - Cyclops is hired as Hogwarts new Muggle Studies professor. It's pretty nifty.

Green Flying Saucers and Blue Time Machines by [livejournal.com profile] chicafrom3 - Doctor Who/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Ford, Jack - Ford and Jack meet in a bar on Earth. Funny with a slight dose of melancholy at the end.

*Wesley Crusher Dies by akire - Highlander/Star Trek TNG - Wesley, Richie/Methos - Wesley Crusher, it turns out, is an Immortal; Richie mentors him. Not the best thing I've ever read, but "Character X finds out they're Immortal!" is a classic plot, and it's nice to read something where the author doesn't hate Wesley.

Staying Alive by [livejournal.com profile] doctorv - DC comics/Stargate Atlantis - Booster/Ted, Superbuddies - Booster, Ted, and the rest of the Superbuddies are members of the Atlantis expedition. Anytime you've got this crew, you've got wackiness and hijinks.

*According to Plan by [livejournal.com profile] xparrot - Smallville/Static Shock - Clark/Lex, Virgil/Richie - Lex and Virgil's dad get kidnapped; Clark, Virgil, and Richie work together to get them back. Pretty good. It's a sequel to Of Heroes and Villains and Partners, which is shorter but also enjoyable.

Five Reasons Xander Hates Pete Wentz by [livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet - Buffy/Fall Out Boy - Xander, Pete Wentz - The ending to this cracks me up every time.

Re: Part 1! :D
Thank you! You have an impressive list! I never knew some of these crossovers were even possible.

Calvin/Jason? o_O I'll never be able to read Calvin and Hobbs or FoxTrot the same way again.

Re: Part 1! :D
You're welcome! I thought the same thing about Calvin/Jason too at first, but it's actually a fairly sweet story. It's a type of sweet that includes destruction of property via rockets, mind you, but still.

*Mathletes 'Verse by [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot - House/Stargate Atlantis - House/McKay - What if House had attended high school with Rodney McKay? It's neat.

Highly Classified and Very Hush Hush and Strictly on a Need to Know Basis by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock - NCIS/Stargate Atlantis - ensemble - Three naked Marines end up in NCIS' care. More than a little cracky, very funny.

The Gorram Pegasus Galaxy by [livejournal.com profile] khohen1 - Firefly/Stargate Atlantis - ensemble - It's a comic where Serenity shows up at Atlantis. Fun! I wish it was longer, but then the joke would lose its punch.

*Mind Over Matter by [livejournal.com profile] npkedit - House/X-Men - Chase - The events of X2 put Chase in a unique situation. Very good.

*Beatles 'Verse by [livejournal.com profile] skidmo - Stargate Atlantis/Torchwood - Ianto/Lorne - Lorne's at loose ends and finds himself in Cardiff. A good job of making a crossover pairing work in a longer fic.

*Supersaturation 'Verse by [livejournal.com profile] skoosiepants (scroll down to find it) - Stargate Atlantis/Wentz-related bandom - various pairings, huge ensemble - What if the boys (and girls) from the Pete Wentz-focused section of bandom were all members of the Atlantis expedition? Very fun and more than a bit silly as the author tries to work in as many cliches as she can. (I remember both body swaps and de-aging taking place, for example.)

Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda by [livejournal.com profile] tartanshell - Fantastic Four/X-Men - Reed Richards, Scott Summers - Reed and Scott meet as young men. This is just really nice and friendshippy.

*A Distorted Genius by Hwshipper - House/Nero Wolfe - House/Wilson, Archie, Wolfe - Wilson's been arrested for murder, and House hires Wolfe to solve the case. I really liked this one.

Acquainted with the Night by [livejournal.com profile] marag - DC comics/House - Sequel to Change Is the Only Constant, House is forced to attend one of Bruce Wayne's parties.

Paparazzo by [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke - Iron Man/Spider-Man - Tony/Peter - Iron Man and Spider-Man meet while Spider-Man saves Iron Man's butt. This is really fun with great dialogue.

All in a Day's Work by miss_baxter - Doctor Who/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Donna meets the Vogons. Go Donna!

Huntin' Ain't Never Been So Shiny by [livejournal.com profile] moonshayde - Supernatural/Twilight - Sam, Dean, Edward - Sam and Dean hunt a different sort of vampire. I said I like my Supernatural fic cracky, right? This fits right into that.

*Fortunate Voyager by [livejournal.com profile] marag - Star Trek Enterprise/X-Men - ensemble - Scott Summers, Logan, Kitty Pride, and Bobby Drake find themselves mysteriously transported onto the Enterprise. Good execution, fun read.

Pt 3, The Last Part
*Office Hours by [livejournal.com profile] tartanshell - Spider-Man/X-Men - Hank McCoy, Peter Parker - Hank befriends one of his students, Peter Parker. Really good writing with both friendship and plot.

*The Wisdom to Know the Difference by [livejournal.com profile] tartanshell - Daredevil/Spider-Man/X-Men - Peter Parker, Hank McCoy, Scott Summers, Matt Murdock - Hank goes through some changes and Peter wants to do something to help his friend. This is even longer than Office Hours, and I adore it. Lots of friendship with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments, this is one of those stories where it shows (in a good way) that the author had fun writing it.

Origin Story by jjonahjameson - Incredibles/Spider-Man - Edna Mode, Peter Parker - Spider-Man saves Edna from a mugging. Edna! She's always fabulous to read.

*The Scarab by BK the Irregular - Buffy/Stargate SG1 - ensemble - A Goa'uld gets the idea to use vampires to try to take over Earth with. Very long and plotty with a good use of both ensemble casts.

*Actualize This by Helena Handbasket - Invisible Man/Sentinel/Stargate SG1 - Darien & Bobby, Jim & Blair, and Jack & Daniel are forced to attend a government team-building workshop; wacky plot ensues. One of my favorite things about this (aside from the wacky plot because that's pretty much a given) are the different conclusions the characters come to about each other because they're all so off-base. It's all very, very funny.

Also, try the Multiverse ficathon (link goes to 2007's 'thon, which has links to previous years). It's a ficathon for crossovers between various sci-fi shows.

Also also, I'm stopping here, but if you would like crossovers for a specific fandom, just say! I have something like 500 crossovers bookmarked, these are just the ones that I could remember fairly well when I saw the title.

Re: Pt 3, The Last Part
Thank you, thank you! And I'm totally going to take you up on your offer -- pretty much the only SPN fic I read are crossovers (since I'm not a fan of incest or depressing fic, which pretty much just leaves crack in this particular fandom), so I was wondering if you had any more suggestions for the pretty boys:)

Thanks again!

Re: Pt 3, The Last Part
I can most definitely do Supernatural crack since that's about the only Supernatural fic I read.

Wildlife by [livejournal.com profile] rheasilvia - Saiyuki crossover - Dean and Sam are looking for a kappa. They find Gojyo. This is actually the third in a series of five, but I haven't read the others.

Jack by [livejournal.com profile] mute90 - Will and Grace crossover - Jack spots Dean and Sam and comes to some conclusions about Dean. Very funny dialogue.

What Kind of Day Has It Been? by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool - Muppet Show crossover - Dean and Sam take a job at the Muppet Show. Watching characters deal with the Muppets and all the weirdness that comes with them is good times.

The Roads of the World and Hero Complex by [livejournal.com profile] celli - SGA crossover - Dean as an Atlantis expedition member. Surprisingly, not crack but pretty fun if you don't mind Sam being left behind on Earth.

Of Unconventional Dealbreaking by [livejournal.com profile] rionaleonhart - Not a crossover, but I thought I'd throw this in. Dean is changed into a unicorn in order to escape a demonic contract. I laugh every time I read this because, among lots of other things, flowers bloom wherever Dean walks.

I don't know if this even exists...but do you know of any Scrubs crossovers? Preferably with another medical show/novel. Thanks! :)

Re: Pt 3, The Last Part
The only Scrubs crossover I have with a medical show is Just Like House Without the Limp by [livejournal.com profile] rionaleonhart which is a House crossover where JD is House's patient. Lots of snappy dialogue in this one. But I have a few non-medical show crossovers too.

My Brain Slug by [livejournal.com profile] spastic_visions - Animorphs crossover - Turk extracts a brain slug from a patient during surgery, and the Animorphs crew shows up. Scrubs is already odd enough on its own that the oddness of introducing brain slugs to a show without any scifi/fantasy elements doesn't seem contrived.

Vinegar Pistol by [livejournal.com profile] puritybrown - Torchwood crossover, JD/Jack Harkness - JD's just minding his business in a bathroom when a vortex appears and dumps an injured Jack at his feet. First there's an alien to fight and then there's sexin'.

My Space Adventure by [livejournal.com profile] skoosiepants - SGA crossover - JD is a member of the Atlantis expedition. [livejournal.com profile] skoosiepants is very good at the quirkiness that's JD's internal monologue.

...I just realized I've got about a dozen bookmarks that can be summarized with "Character A's a member of the Atlantis expedition!" I hadn't realized it was such a popular crossover basis until just now.
