A Matter of Time by Demotu (NC-17)

  • Oct. 8th, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Title: A Matter of Time
Fandom: Torchwood
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Category: action/adventure, drama, angst
Length: monster epic (>100,000)
Warnings: written before season two finale; very-minor-character death

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] demotu
Website: none

Author's Summary: A time travelling, action-adventure, romance-filled science fiction romp ensues when Ianto runs into Jack in the fifty-first century after an accident with a vortex manipulator. Laser blasters, alien dance clubs, mercenaries, a little too much public sex for Ianto's tastes, sneaky plans and circular logic can be found here.

Review:
Ianto discovers Jack's real name, why he never talks about his past, and what really happened to the two years of memory Jack lost in this action-packed sci-fi epic tale, which, through some really complicated temporal mechanics, led to the following romantic encounters: Jack/Ianto, Jack/Ianto, Jack/Ianto, and Jack/Jack/Ianto (I'm not kidding!).

If you like long, plotty stories that explore Jack's history along with some serious discussions of 51st-century culture and values but is sick of the silliness of Torchwood canon, this is a must-read for you. While I can't say I like this Jack much more than the canon version (and it has nothing to do with his polyamory), Demotu has created a character with incredible depth while staying close to canon. The author has also written an interesting essay on the 51st-century definition of love/commitment, which can be found here. Highly recommended.

A Matter of Time (master post)

Edit: I've also posted a discussion of the author's essay over at [livejournal.com profile] epic_rants  (see here).

Thanks for the rec!
Hi! Loved the fic and am craving more Torchwood fic... Can anyone point me to more Torchwood slash epics Jack/Ianto? Preferably good quality writing, adult rating and the longer the better...

Re: Thanks for the rec!
I can. [livejournal.com profile] rm and [livejournal.com profile] kalichan have a long series of fics, I had no idea i had been traveling (http://kalichan.livejournal.com/tag/i+had+no+idea+i+had+been+traveling).

[livejournal.com profile] dsudis just posted an amazing epic, Get Loved, Make More, Try to stay alive (http://dsudis.livejournal.com/455498.html).

There is always lazuli and her Attrition (http://lazuli.kat.users.btopenworld.com/attrition/attrition.htm), [livejournal.com profile] xtricks and What Lies Within (http://xtricks.livejournal.com/68484.html), anything by [livejournal.com profile] sarcasticchick, and so on. Um. There are more long ones, try [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_house and check the tags under length for series, multichapter, and epic.

(Sorry for editing! Fixing tags.)

Re: Thanks for the rec!
Oh! Thank you for the recs, am going through them now. I also found this site: http://community.livejournal.com/dwtwslashawards/ with a lot of fics. Am reading sarcasticchick's Shades of Ianto right now... Heavenly :)

I must say once again that "A Matter of Time" was an interesting read and I read it from cover to cover, which is rare for me... I always read 3-4 stories parallel but not with your fic. Usually one of my major squicks are non-monogamous relationships and I still feel that Jack should stay faithful to Ianto, but your explanation of Jack's omnisexuality made me accept that Jack could love Ianto with all that he is and still dabble with other people. Good work!

Yep, Shades is the Epic of Epic in this fandom. I haven't been able to read it all yet, alas... too busy writing! :P

Re: Thanks for the rec!
I'm glad you liked this story (and I'm sure demotu is thrilled as well). It's just absolutely brilliant, isn't it?

I second all of the stories demotu already rec'd you, especially Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive, which I will probably end up posting a separate rec anyway because EVERYONE should read it :)

There's also a Jack/Ianto rec community if you're interested in combing through their recs:
