Dearest by Lavvyan (PG-13)

  • Sep. 28th, 2008 at 9:14 AM
Have you ever felt the world and its inhabitants are just way too jolly? Have you thought: gee, am I the only miserable one? You've come to the right place. This is your chance for a reality check --  there are many people out there with a life less fortunate than yours. And that's a mood booster, really. ;p

After much debate (and personal agony!), I'm finally ready to INTRODUCE...Sad Stories for Sundays, a new special series of recs that focus on one common theme: character death. These fics rec'd in this series will deviate from your usual ER recs in length as well as theme. Please keep in mind that these are NOT happy stories.

Title: Dearest
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: John/Rodney
Category: angst, Sad Stories for Sundays
Length: short
Warnings: character death, slavery

Author's Summary: 04-877-57-7G was sixteen when he was finally transferred to his owner.

Review:In a society where people with the ATA gene were kept as pets, 04-877-57-7G was given an actual name by his owner, Dr. Rodney McKay. The doctor wanted him to get a good education and be able think for himself. The doctor also thought it was inhumane to keep people as pets. What neither of them knew was the price they would have to pay for such freedom. And when you have the choice, do you always make the right decisions? This is a story about love and love's loss. Original, poignant, and absolutely heart-wrenching. Highly recommended.

When I first saw the title I thought you were reccing Pru's Dearest (http://glitterati.talkoncorners.net/fiction/dearest.php), which turns me into a big ball of tears every time I re-read it. And I re-read that thing just about every other week. But Pru's story leaves me with bittersweet tears. Those go down okay. It's the stories that have me sobbing and wanting to play The Cure whilst doning eyeliner and black lipstick that I read only under duress. They can be good as anything, but still!

Oh, I almost forgot about Pru's Dearest; that is a good story. This one...this one makes you think about life...

Here you go, trying to make my Sunday profound...shame on you. :)

I love this story. Though I try to avoid stuff that makes me cry. I'm holding out the faintest hope that the author might write a sequel, to give it a happy ending.

There is still hope, we don't know for sure that McKay's dead. Perhaps he's really just missing. Perhaps that's what John will have to believe to keep himself sane...

Actually, [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan has finally written a sequel to this! It doesn't really fit under this label anymore. :3
