RR -- Harlequin AUs

  • Aug. 3rd, 2007 at 9:00 AM
Here's how it works:

Every Friday, I post a theme. It might be as simple as a fandom or a pairing, or it might be a premise or story category. Anyone who's interested can comment to that post, reccing one story that meets that week's theme.

The rules are simple:
-No more than one story recced per person, per theme.
-Include a link to the story (or a link to each part, if the story has more than one)

That's it. Unless specified otherwise in that week's theme, you get to choose the fandom, the pairing, the length, the rating, etc. Feel free to rec your own stories, stories by your friends, or fabulous fic that you've loved for years and that no one has ever recognized before. Heck, if you want you can rec something already I've already recced, though it's extremely unlikely I'll be reviewing fic a second time. I'll read all of your recommendations and they'll get added to my pool of possible stories to review.

(As a side note, while you're welcome to rec stories of any length, pairing, rating, yadda, yadda, if you really want to increase your chances of getting the story reviewed in this community you should probably shoot for longer, completed fics with happy endings. Especially the latter. It's hard to picture me reccing something too sad.)

What do ya'll think? Sound like fun?

This week's theme:

Harlequin AUs

(Also, I'm looking for feedback on Reader's Recs themes.  Do you prefer a general theme, or a specific fandom?  What about pairings?  Would you like me to include more specific details, such as a length clause?)

Um. I got a DS harlequin to rec you. I rather like harlequin stories, so, if you don't mind (seeing as this is an old challenge?) I could probably rec some from the Supernatural fandom (there's, um, incest fic between brothers and there's Real Person Slash fic). Not sure if you're willing for that or not.

Anyway. Due South rec: BF/RK

Hm. Gotta admit that incest and RPS are *huge* squicks for me (which is why I can't seem to get into Supernatural fanfic, though I love the show). I hear they're adding a few new characters next season, though, so I have high hopes for finding an in soon!

Thanks for the rec! (Though, if you could include the titles in the future, I'd really appreciate it:)

I know you commented about this forever ago, but I was wondering about your feelings on Dean/Castiel in Supernatural fandom? It's neither RPS or incest! <3

I'm mostly in favor of it, but after accidentally reading the Melting 'Verse AU (before the author put warnings on it) has made it very hard for me to enjoy the pairing the way I used to. I have recced a Dean/Castiel fic before, though, and my co-reccer has one as well:

D: What? A fic out there ruined Dean/Cas for you? o__o How does that happen? >.<; No offense, haha, the only way that could happen for me is... well, if I didn't really like the pairing to begin with? I don't know, I love the the pairing too much-- so much, in fact, that I've come out of lurking and begun writing fic for it. <3 <333

I rec the hell out of it myself on my delicious (191 Dean/Cas fics are recced there): http://delicious.com/TehOpheliac/Dean%2FCastiel

Among other things (I have over 1,000 recs and I still have about 300 Mckay/Sheppard fics to add! \o/)

Thank you though! <3 Also, I love this community. <3 I always go here first for any new fandom I get into or if I want new recs. <3 I adore it. <3

If you're willing to try again, you should read this fic:

Title: And I Will Walk On Water (http://tracy-loo-who.livejournal.com/92760.html)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] tracy_loo_who
Summary: In which Dean discovers that the archangels didn't finish their job after all, and that demons picked up where they left off.

This is seriously one of my most favorite fics (it's amazing) and it's long-- 122,600 words, as a matter of fact. <3 I will have to warn you, it's dark, but it's well worth the read. <3

Even though it's an epic hurt/comfort fic and there's rape/torture/etc. (Dean and Sam basically find Cas after it's all done and over with), it doesn't actually focus on that aspect. I think that's what I love about this fic so much, it breaks away from the usual dark elements and focuses on an actual plot that has little to nothing to do with what happened to Cas-- in fact, I'm pretty sure they [ie, the boys] just pretend it didn't happen for the majority of the fic and slowly get closer. This isn't to say that it isn't addressed, mind you, because it is and it's all very well into character. <3

So, yeah, I suggest giving this fic a try if it sounds interesting enough. Who knows, maybe you'll love it! <3

No, thank you! I've been wanting to give you a good rec for a long time. <3

Would you mind letting me know what you think when you get around to reading it? I'd really like to know! <333

I can try, but to be honest I have over 4,000 stories in my to read folder (it's over 1 GB now) and at the moment I'm trying to read my older files (I have some in there from 2004!) You never know, though -- sometimes I get really into a fandom and/or pairing and read everything I have on it:)

xD Haha, that's kind of cool. I used to do that with my old delicious account. I had a huge "To-Read" list that sort of over my actual recs-- hence my knew delicious account. After 5,000+ stories to read, it was a little overwhelming. xD

What are you current fandoms that your actively reading? :D

In the last few days I've read The Sentinel, Jeeves & Wooster, Harry Potter, Due South, and White Collar. Plus I did some rereading for reccing purposes: Jeeves and Wooster again, The OC, Keen Eddie, and Hikaru no Go.

Starting up ER has made me vastly more organized in my reading/reccing. When I first started the comm, I had maybe a hundred files in a general, all-purpose 'to read' folder. These days my to read folder has over seventy sub folders, representing well over a hundred fandoms. Sometimes it does get a bit overwhelming:)

Hmm, I haven't see The Sentinel or Jeeves & Wooster. I'm surprised you're reading Harry Potter though-- you kept seeming reluctant to read it! <3 What pairing? Draco/Harry? ^^

Oh, Due South! I love love love that show... but rarely can I find a fic worth reading-- mainly because I hate fics written in first or second person "I said" or "I looked" is just too personal for me. DX For some reason, a large majority of Due South fic are written like this. =/

Have you found any good White Collar fics? I've read some Peter/Neal and Peter/Neal/Elizabeth, but there was only one I actually liked! D': Since I usually enjoy anything you rec, I was wondering if you've found anything good? :D

Oh trust me, I absolutely understand what you mean. My friends keep commenting on my crazy-- that is, my Archive folder that has my saved fics (well over a thousands) and stories I want to read from multiple fandoms. xD As well as podfics too!

My favorite fandoms are: SGA (Mckay/Sheppard), SPN (Dean/Cas), Star Trek (Kirk/Spock), and Harry Potter (Snape/Harry -- my first OTP). I have a ton of other fandoms, but these are the ones I always come back to.

Do you watch Glee or Merlin? :D

Actually, Harry Potter is probably the fandom I read the most these days -- there are just so *many* stories and a huge number of them are really long. Plus, some of the best written fics in fandom are from HP (admittedly, so are some of the worst, but when you've got several hundred thousand stories to choose from, you've got a lot of chances to hit something great). I think I've recced a good fifty or sixty HP fics to date.

Pairings I read in HP are Harry/Snape (I don't read this much as a romantic relationship anymore, though -- mostly mentor!fic), Harry/Draco, Hermione/Snape, and (occasionally) Albus Severus/Scorpius.

Due South -- I have to admit, my love of DS fanfic has faded quite a bit. Back in the day, that and Smallville were my only slash fandoms (and compared to Smallville, DS was pure literary gold). Now that I've seen what else is out there, I've found that many of the DS stories I loved really pale in comparison to what I've read in other fandoms. I suspect that, once I've cleaned out my to read folder for DS (around 250 stories) I'll probably exit the fandom for good.

White Collar: I personally ship Peter/Elizabeth/Neal almost exclusively (as Peter/Neal nearly always includes partner betrayal, which I just don't do). As for recs --- no comment (well, except to say that I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when we have our 1,000 readers celebration:)

I watch Merlin as background noise, because if I pay attention I'd have to shoot someone, at least in the first two-thirds of each season. Glee I usually watch while I'm writing; I enjoy the Will/Emma scenes and the musical numbers, but am not a huge fan of stereotypes or caricatures (which means I tend to find most of the characters grating).

Haha! That's funny. Yeah, I'm a huge Snape/Harry fan, but I'll take a little Draco/Harry on the side. This is mainly because I adore Snape and literally only got into HP because of him. Before I'd read the books, I'd ended up stumbling upon a Snape/Harry fic and I completely fell for the Bastard. I only even read the book series because of him! xD

So... when it comes to fic, I usually only read about my favorite character. Not always, of course, I have read some fics without him (but only if they sound interesting), but the fics I enjoy the most feature Snape as a main character. xD So, I go for: Snape/Harry, Snape/Lupin, Snape/Sirius (rare), Snape/Anyone, really.

I totally understand that! I've recently gotten into both Smallville and Due South and I've been having a really hard time trying to find anything I consider really good. This is probably because my first fandom was Harry Potter and from there I went to more diverse fandoms with ridiculously wonderful writing. xD So, I'm finding it a struggle to find anything good at all! D':

Omg, you too! Thank god! Thank god! I go totally OT3 for White Collar, but I'm okay with Peter/Neal so long as Elizabeth knows and doesn't mind-- they have her approval. Cheating is a huge squick for me too. Eeee! I'll be looking forward to that then! <333 I would love to be able to find something good to read in White Collar. <333333

Ouch! I like Merlin, but I hate some of the pairings... I'd be more Gwen/Morgana (I like this one most!) and Arthur/Merlin sometimes. I think Merlin is fun to watch, even if it is really annoying sometimes. D': As for Glee-- I love Glee. I very much dislike Finn, Rachel, and Quinn (cheaters!!!), (and Terry in general) but I adore Kurt. And Emma. Emma is so adorable. I love the Will/Emma as well!

What about Psych? Or DC Comics? Have you tried Star Trek? How do you still feel about John/Rodney?

I like Snape a lot, but I'm not a huge fan of how he's often written by fans. I like him to be scathing and witty, not cruel and frothing at the mouth. A lot of writers seem to have a tough time with that.

Smallville and Due South both have some great fic, but a lot of the most recced stories in those fandoms just can't live up to more contemporary fic (more authors equals more crap, but it also increases the potential for true classics).

My problem in White Collar is finding *long* fics. There's a lot of shorties out there, but the chances of me reading a story under 2,000 words is very slim and the chances of me reccing something that length is nearly non-existant.

I like Merlin fic when Arthur is written as he is in the latter half of each season -- a good guy with prattish tendancies (rather than a prat without redeeming qualities). Haven't had much luck with long fic in that fandom either.

Glee: I think my biggest problem with the show is that, like you, I don't like Rachel. I'm also not a fan of Sue or Terry and since the three of them combined get about 60% of the screentime for the show, it makes it hard for me to watch. (Plus, I hate that I hate nearly all of the female characters on this show. *sigh*

Psych: The show is okay, but I do think it peaked at the end of its first season. Fanfic is generally much too dark for me, though I have a handful of potential recs coming.

DC Comics: I'm too cheap to spend money on comic books:) That said, most DC characters are familiar enough that I've read at least a handful of things they're featured in. Mostly, though, I enjoy reading them in a Smallville future fic (I just can't bear Lex and Clark to hate each other).

Star Trek: I liked the new movie, but I'm even less of a fan of Kirk than I was before. Thus I'm having a tough time finding fic. Fortunately the other reccers routinely fight over who gets to rec Star Trek, so the comm shouldn't suffer:)

John/Rodney: I still like them, but right now I'm having a tough time getting into SGA stories (I go through phases like these; Highlander is another fandom I feel this way about). Still, I'm saving any new ones that show up that sound interesting and at some point I'll start reading it again.

As for TV in general, to be honest, there's very few shows I actually focus all of my attention on these days (rather than play in the background): Fringe (which has recently gotten very good), White Collar, Castle, The Closer, Leverage (when it's having a good episode). Part of it is that I just don't have the time I used to, but part of it is that there just aren't any shows on this season that have *really* grabbed me (like Veronica Mars did in its first season, or Farscape in its second). I have high hopes for next season, though -- NBC is apparently coming up with a fabulous slate of pilots.
