RR -- Convert the Reccers

  • Sep. 24th, 2008 at 3:42 PM
An interesting side effect of the not-totally-planned-out membership drive (though I much prefer the way it turned out to the alternative where I did all the pimping myself:) is that folks are mentioning new fandoms, pairings, even genres that they would like to see recced here.   Now, I can't promise that every fandom and pairing will eventually be recced at ER (after all, we can only rec in fandoms and pairings that that we read and enjoy), but I can promise that we have an open mind when it comes to trying new fic (especially true of me, since I have a voracious appetite for fic and it takes an enormous number of stories to keep my to read folder topped up).

All of which is to say: now is your chance to convert me and the other reccers to your fandoms and pairings.

Speaking for myself, all it takes is one fabulous story and I'm hooked, so you have a good chance of swaying at least one reccer to your fandom:)  For those who really want to make a good impression: we've designed and formatted our recs to be the way that we prefer to receive recs.  This means that, while you don't have to include anything besides a title, author's name, and link, we're much, much more likely to give a story a shot if there is a story length, summary, and review.  Frankly, I doubt I'd ever read a random Star Wars story, but if someone pointed me to an epic-length Star Wars fic that featured a marriage of convenience, ramapant (but not too dark) angst, and a ridiculously happy ending, I'd be all over it like white on rice.  In fact...is there such a fic out there?  If so, where?

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Convert the reccers!

Previous readers' rec themes can be found here.

Fandom/Pairing: SGA, McKay/Todd-the-Wraith
(This pairing is strangely entrancing and addictive. I somehow cannot get enough wraith!fic, which is a little creepy. I think it's because they're the SGA equivalant of vampire romance novels. :P)

The Kids Aren't All Right (http://www.butcheredart.net/Fiction/Kids.html) by [livejournal.com profile] samdonne
Fandom: Iron Man (movie 'verse)
(This fic completely ruined me for the rest of the fic, it's so well done. But I think it's a good first story to read in this fandom.)

Fandom/Pairing: Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley
(I <3 these two characters way too much for it to be completely healthy, they are just wonderfully snarky and married together. Also, the book is amazing. Aziraphale and Crowley are my feel-good pairing)

*koff* ... Star Wars fic....
So, well. There's lots of bonding sort of stories in Star Wars, esp Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, but I thought I'd start you out with one original trilogy and one Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan... All word counts are approximate; I copied and pasted into my word program.

Fandom: Star Wars
Title: Consort of a Jedi
Pairing: Han/Luke
Category: AU
Rating: NC17
Summary: Han is captured by Vadar when Hoth is attacked.
Word Count: 32,500 (approx)
Review: Pretty close to a marriage of convenience, there are some consent issues because of what exactly happened to Han so that Luke and Han ended up in a marriage of (in)convenience, but it ends happily, after a suitable amount of angst...
Link: http://www.angelfire.com/nb/annehiggins/misc/consort.html

Fandom: Star Wars
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan
Author: Lilith Sedai
Title: The Elements Series (four stories)
Summary: Qui-Gon doesn't take Obi-Wan as his apprentice - so Yoda does. And then, the two of them have to work together.
Review: Long series about their relationship and, of course (this is Star Wars) bonding and acceptance of said bond. With action and corruption and strife between them and outside of them, and faking intimacy that turns real.
Links: (from Master Apprentice, other links can be dug up)
First: Water:
http://masterapprentice.com/archive/e/elements_water.html
Word Count: 22,500
Second: Earth:
http://masterapprentice.com/archive/e/elements_earth.html
Word Count: 22,000
Third: Air:
http://masterapprentice.com/archive/e/elements_air.html
Word Count: 34,500
Fourth: Fire:

Word Count: 29,500

ETA: Link for Han/Luke found courtesy of Google, links for Lilith Sedai's fic found here: http://fiction.fandomish.net/fpfic/starwars/
ETA2: um. First fic? hand-wavy over anatomy. *headdesk* Right. I think I'd better stop...

Snape/Lupin
Title: The Wounded (57,877 words) and sequel Home's the Farthest Way (78,013) http://www.fanfiction.net/u/430046/ReeraTheRed
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: starts gen, becomes Snape/Lupin (however, Lupin turns female *cough*)
Category: angst, romance, genderfuck
Length: epic (>40,000)
Warnings: suicide attempt, depression
Author on LJ: Reera the Red [livejournal.com profile] reerathered

Review: This was one of the first Snape/Lupin stories that I read, and even though it starts out gen Reera's writing pulled me in; and even though Lupin ended up female, I kept reading because I loved her characters so much. Poor, damaged Snape....

Title: The Mills of Manchester (47,546 words) http://snupinsanta.annex-files.com/viewstory.php?sid=97
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Snape/Lupin (NC17)
Category: AU
Length: epic (>40,000)
Warnings: blood, disability, minor character death, alpha!Remus
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] snapelike

Author's Summary: It is a cold and bitter January day when famous chef Severus Snape is sacked from the posh French restaurant he has been managing for almost fifteen years. He discovers there is a world outside—a world where three meals a day is a luxury and life is a struggle to stay alive. Soon Severus finds himself queuing up for a job at the cotton mills, and it is not an entirely pleasant experience. Several people try to interfere with Severus' life, and when Remus Lupin suddenly shows up, Severus' plans take a quite different turn...
Review: Okay, this was written for me, so I'm hugely prejudiced (she included all three of my prompts!), but it also a bold, epic, engaging AU -- how can that be bad? PLUS! It comes with recipes!

Title: The Way of the World (40,649 words) http://remembrall.slashcity.net/viewstory.php?sid=140&warning=1
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Category: romance
Length: epic by a bit (>40,000)
Warnings: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scribbulusink

Author's Summary: After the war, Remus tells the wizarding world to sod off and goes to live as a Muggle, and three years later, Severus comes looking for him, wanting to know how to do the same thing.
Review: Again, one of the *major* first stories I read in the fandom. It's a quiet, sweet development of friendship, interest, and love, with a happy end.

Title: Compulsion (http://www.ssf-moonshadow.com/archive/archive/7/compulsion.html)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Category: AU (figure skating, non-magic)
Length: I'm guessing epic (>40,000)
Warnings: not that I recall??
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arionrhod

Review: Lovely, long, detailed figure skating AU!

Title: The Great Hogwarts Christmas Gift Exchange (-40,000 words) http://snegurochka.slashcity.net/fics/christmas1.html
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Snape/Lupin amongst others
Category: humour, romance, friendship
Length: long (15,000-40,000) or epic (>40,000)
Warnings: none that I recall?
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee
Rating: PG-13

Author's Summary: Ron wants Luna, but Luna wants Ginny, and Ginny wants Harry, and Harry wants Hermione, but Hermione wants Lupin, and Lupin wants… Snape? Oh, what tangled webs we weave, when Dumbledore sets up a little seasonal fun for a group of hormonal teenagers spending their Christmas at Grimmauld Place – with two angsty thirty-somethings who have quite enough of their own problems to be getting on with.
Review: Snegurochka's fic always packs a huge, heart-wrenching emotional punch, but in this case the humour's fantastic as well. I cried. From laughter, as I recall.

Self-pimps because I am fat-headed, sorry
Title: Ten Aprils (54,906 words) http://busaikko.slashcity.org/?p=8 http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=13144
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Snape/Lupin
Category: angst, adventure, romance, MPreg (no, wait, come back!)
Length: epic (>40,000)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko
Rating: NC17
Warnings: Reference (mostly off-screen) to some or all of the following: Character death, rape, torture, abuse, abortion, miscarriage, childbirth, and unscrupulous experimentation. MPreg.
Author's Summary: Severus must find a way for Harry to defeat Voldemort. Remus must find a way for Severus to free himself from the past. Written for the 2006 Lupin-Snape Fantasy Fest for The Senjou, who wanted mpreg, R upwards, black humour, Remus is preggers, suffers through pregnancy, Severus easing him through the whole experience in fluffy and kinky ways, I think there should be some fruit cake involved somewhere

Title: The Maddest House (45,010 words) http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=13147 http://busaikko.slashcity.org/?p=32
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Lupin/Black
Category: angst, adventure, romance, kidfic (Raising Harry)
Length: epic (>40,000)
Warnings: ((no character death, but that's a spoiler, yo))
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko

Author's Summary: AU. In the aftermath of Halloween 1981, Sirius Black becomes Harry's guardian, and Remus, their Secret Keeper. In a Britain increasingly under Voldemort's control, Sirius must teach Harry how to use the power he has. SB/RL slash.
Review: Lord, this is one of the first things I wrote in on-line fandom... there are rough places (I'd write the sex differently now, I think), but there are also good parts. Like Ten Aprils, it explores the mechanics of how to defeat evil with love, and Horcruxes. Like Ten Aprils, I had great fun bringing Voldemort down!

Title: A Hundred Happy Things (30,000 words) http://busaikko.livejournal.com/94799.html
Fandom: Stargate:Atlantis
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay
Category: AU (non-stargate), kidfic
Length: long (15,000-40,000)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko
Rating: NC17
Prompt: Your average Harlequin AU, except that one of the pairing is trans.
Author's Summary: Harlequin AU (no Stargate). Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power!, and Sheppard. . . is pretty much the same.
Warnings: reference to the verbal abuse of a child and physical violence; Ford and Jeannie misbehave
Review: Crap. Um. I'm noticing that all my epic fic is kidfic. Good lord, what an epiphany to have! This will kill my image, for sure....

I wish I could rec epic-length comic-based Iron Man fic to balance the movie rec (because people should all join my fandom instead of the other Iron Man fandom! Really! You all should! We have nudity and red thongs and angst and talking to computers inside your head and Tony in a dress!), but there isn't any epic-length stuff that's not written by me.

Some shorter fics though:

Everybody got Naked and We Got Cap Back Day (http://www.talesofsuspense.net/viewstory.php?sid=133&chapter=1) by [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard. Everyone is naked, and Captain America comes back from the dead. Naked. Awesome Tony voice.

A Meeting of Minds (http://crimsonquills.livejournal.com/tag/fic+(chaptered):+a+meeting+of+minds) by [livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills. Soul-bonding. Medium-to-long length.

Other fics I feel the need to rec to everyone:

Total Eclipse pf the Heart (http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/eclipse/index.htm) by Flamingo. Starsky & Hutch. The The Childrens Hour but with homicide cops instead of teachers and a happy ending. And lots more gay sex. The villains could use a little work, but the angst and melodrama is awesome.

Rictus (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2404010/1/) by sequitur. NCIS. How DiNiozzo ended up working for Gibbs. Good enough to be a professional police-procedural novel. It will suck you into the characters and fandom and then leave you cruelly disappointed because there are almost no other good, long gen fics like this.

The Captain and the King (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/652532/1/The_Captain_and_the_King) by plasticChevy. Boromir lives AU. Hands-down the best long Tolkien fic I have ever read. She manages to deliver the h/c and emotional intensity of good fanfic while still keeping with the feel of Tolkien, something not a lot of writers can do. Not slash, but it has Aragorn and Boromir swearing fealty to one another, and being tortured by Saruman, and generally being slashy as all hell despite the fic's non-slash status and inclusion of a female OC (she's not at all a mary sue, and only mildly annoying in that romances with OC are not something I want from Tolkien). The still-in-progress sequel has more slashiness and one of the better-written examples of Uruk-Hai characterization I've seen. Plus Aragorn being the inspiration that gets Boromir to make it through being held captive by evil orcs because their love is just that slashily platonically true.

Actually, what would probably give people the best look at the fandom as a whole as well as the characters and the pairing is the results of [livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman's Alphabet Challenge (http://community.livejournal.com/cap_ironman/127136.html#cutid1). Twenty-something fics (a few contributors defaulted) by different authors, in different genre (crack, fluff, humor, angst), each one based on a letter of the alphabet. I did A, but my personal favorites are [livejournal.com profile] fire_tears's M for Media (http://nosilencehere.livejournal.com/21049.html) and [livejournal.com profile] schmevil's Orbiter Dictum (http://martianhouse.livejournal.com/17803.html).

Also [livejournal.com profile] simmysim Precious Illusion (http://community.livejournal.com/cap_ironman/130927.html?view=1715567), where Steve comes back from the dead to find that Tony has... upgraded. It's utterly gorgeous, with some really interesting meta-content on people and machines and exactly what makes people human.
