Summary: When a mission takes an unexpected turn, SG-1 quickly learns that fantasy can be a powerful thing, especially when it's a personal fantasy from one of your teammates.
Review:
Being stranded and possibly concussed in unfamiliar surroundings with no 'gate in sight, an injured Rohirrim Prince in tow, and two dozen orcs on your trail can be a real downer, especially when you realize it's all because of some crazy fantasy your teammate has. Not that that slows SG-1 down...or stops Jack from some light ribbing in the process.
'Lord of the Gate' is one of the few crossover fics that, when you get right down to it, is not a crossover at all. Sounds confusing, I know, but isn't once you mix in an alien who gets his jollies from plucking a person's fantasy straight from their head and recreates it into the real deal for fun and amusement. Both of which are there in droves in the story, even if the whole situation is a little embarrassing for a certain team member.
Beyond the humor and sheer absurdity (in a good way) of the situation, there's also a wonderful adventure cum mission element to this fic that draws you in and keeps you reading. I honestly wanted to know what happened, even if I have read Lord of the Rings, and that the characters were in character thorough out....well, I was sold. Even if it did make me think a good fantasy can be a dangerous thing.
