Title: No Way to Treat a... Series (by Tinnean)
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: Historical AU (1960's), mystery, drama
Length: super!Epic
Warnings: beastiality (minor)

Review:
Because of the author's notes, I know that the first two stories in this series were based on No Way to Treat a Lady, which I've never seen. It's hard to imagine that it's better than these fics, however, because they're extraordinary.

In the first story we get a quick sprint through Jim's life: kicked out by his father for being gay, sent to military school, became a hustler in NYC, got out of the business and started working in security (with Simon Banks as his boss). It's a little rushed, but that's okay -- Tinnean's just getting through the necessary exposition so we can spend more time on Jim and Blair.

And, boy, do we get more time with them. The second fic is from Blair's POV, starts at Blair's childhood until it catches up with the end of No Way To Treat a Sentinel, and lasts for 600 K. Blair is a cop trying to find a serial killer who is targeting gay men, one of whom is from Jim's past. Unlike most fanfic mystery plots, this story is very well designed, with multiple layers, several plot twists, and a satisfying conclusion. And, needless to say, the development of Jim and Blair's relationship is kick-ass as well. Authentic, fascinating, and surprisingly sweet, this is a good story for anyone who wants to settle in and enjoy an engaging mystery.

BTW, for those who (like me) are seriously turned off by beastiality, I just want to reassure you that the beastiality is minor, occurs only during a couple of dream sequences, and is highly symbolic (gee, I wonder who the panther represents?) Those scenes are also very short and if you wanted to skip right over them (which I tend to do when rereading this fic), it wouldn't hurt your enjoyment of the story.

No Way to Treat a Sentinel
No Way to Treat a Guide
Goin' Courtin' (sort of like a clip episode of the first two -- only included because I have an anal retentive need for completeness)

Hey, you've just made my day! I've never heard of this series and now I can settle down to a lazy old Sunday reading this. Thank you! :-)

I have to admit that I shied away from reading them as well, thanks to the beastiality warning, so it was a pleasant surprise when I finally broke down and gave them a chance. Enjoy!

Sadly, I couldn't even finish the first part because almost everything felt totally off to me. I'll give the second part a try though. I

Hm. I'm thinking that if you didn't like the first, you probably won't like the second, but you never know.

Reccing is always a crapshoot -- no one has identical taste, so there's always going to be some stories people disagree on. Plus, there are only so many perfect stories out there and I figure no one would be happy if I recced ten stories and decided to call it quits:)

I didn't mean to complain - sorry, if it sounded like that! - I was just baffled that it totally didn't grip me. Sorry again! :-(

Not a problem -- I like knowing what does and doesn't work for my readers, as it'll help me decide what to rec in the future. I've certainly noticed a preference for fluff in the feedback I've gotten, and that's one preference I'm more than happy to accomodate:)

Ugh... I'm not really into fluff though. I'm more a fan of gritty realism. But the difficulty I had with this fic is that I simply couldn't believe in hooker!Jim. Hooker!Jim by Jane Davitt though is another kettle of fish. Her hooker!Jim I can totally buy.

Ooo! hooker!Jim? Link? :)

Don't say you haven't heard of it?????? 8-O Jane Davitt's Point of Contact? First time J/B with Dom!Jim being the owner of a hooker agency (still occasionally working) and sub!Blair being his client??? So far it's eight parts and still going....

ENJOY! - And let me know some time how you liked it!

Okay, posting from the library, so I'm going to have to get a little creative with my word choice (@#$#@$ filters!)

Augh! It's a WIP! Which I guess I should have guessed, but I was kind of hoping it was a series:)

Okay, good points: the writing, the characterization, and the fact that Jane's taking her time (this, btw, is *always* a good point -- long stories rock.)

The only issue I'm really having is that the terms of Blair and Jim's relationship (which is a four letter acronym THIS FILTER WON'T LET ME USE *arg*) is neither a k-nk nor a squ-ck for me (heck, explicit material of any sort is neither a k-nk nor a squ-ck -- I've read so many explicit scenes that they don't have much impact any more; I generally read graphic material because that's where the good authors are) so the entire story thus far feels like a PWP. On the other hand, I have high hopes that she's going to continue this story into a 2 MB epic (which isn't impossible at 300 KB a night), which will be highly reccable:)

Thanks for the heads up! I look forward to reading the fic through when Jane's finished with it.

(Side note: this took something like ten tries to get through *sigh*)

Hey, sorry to hear of your difficulties! I really appreciate you taking the time, though.

For me 'very explicit' is often more a squick than a kink, but I do read PoC because of the dialogue. Most of it is dialogue and the - up to now relatively harmless - sex scenes are spread between and not too distracting for me. I love it because it has this lovely UST and the characters feel very IC despite their uncanonical occupations. Which was what I didn't like about No Way... (you were right, I didn't like the second part either :-( ). The guys didn't 'feel' like JimnBlair to me because she did not even have their speech patterns down. I would perhaps have read it as original fic (though why would I be tempted?), because all her J/B had in common with the guys on the show (as far as I can see) were the names.

It's my own fault -- I could have waited till the next day, but I'm always afraid if I do that I'll forget something important.

I think I'm a little more lenient with TS fic than with others because I've never seen the canon and there are so many versions of Jim and Blair out there that I honestly can't tell which is accurate and which isn't. It'll be interesting to see if I get pickier once I've actually seen the show.

You haven't seen it yet? :screeches: Hey, I would borrow you my DVDs if I were in your neighbourhood - or even on the same continent... Also I would borrow you my set of lovely songvids by someone called 'willow@t-online.de' which are seriously good stuff.

Something to consider after I've watched the first season (which is available on DVD and is currently in my Netflix queue). I'm in Utah, USA (which admittedly isn't in very many people's neighborhood:)

I'm thinking they wouldn't play on my dvd player (aren't you guys region 2 or 3?) But it's nice to meet another person from Germany:)

I have the 'official' first season DVD which is region 1 anyway and the other seasons I have are fan made stuff so they should play anywhere.

Whom do you know from Germany already if I may be so curious?
