Title: Little Shadow

Pairing: Chekov/Sulu
Categories: angst, romance, pre-canon
Length: epic (~42,000)
Warnings: one scene of mild violence

Author's Summary: Sulu is Chekov's roommate at the Academy. Sulu is not happy about being saddled with a kid for a roommate, but eventually they become friends. Chekov falls in love with Sulu, and everything falls apart.
Review:
A few big things happen to Chekov at the age of fourteen: (1) he gets into Starfleet Academy, where he's always dreamed of going; (2) he sees the Golden Gate bridge in person for the first time; and (3) he falls in love with his incredibly handsome and funny roommate who does not love him back.
Little Shadow is written from Chekov's point of view, and OMG, it almost broke my heart. I say "almost" because they do eventually get together, but I really wanted to smack Sulu on the head a couple times because things would have been much easier if he weren't so set in his honourable ways (Sulu had good intentions, yet men can be so dense sometimes). The author had Chekov's voice spot on, which made the heart-wrenching parts that much more painful. A few other NuTrek characters also make cameo yet memorable appearances -- featuring Jim Kirk as the (sparse) comic relief.
Very satisfying and highly recommended!
