Review:
Several years post-war, Dumbledore dies peacefully in his sleep. In his will he leaves his family estate to both Harry and Severus, with a proviso that if the two of them can't agree on what to do with the house the one who wants to sell will have to court the one who wants to keep it. Of course, they don't agree, and thus begins one of the sweetest, most romantic marriage of convenience fics ever written.

Most marriage of convenience fics start with the marriage and build to trust from there. The focus of this fic, in contrast, is of the courtship that leads up to the marriage and the relationship that grows between Harry and Severus as they spend more and more time together as a result of the courtship ritual. Both Harry and Severus are in character, though Severus is slightly softer than we're used to seeing him (quite reasonably so, IMO, seeing as it's been years since his life was in constant danger). Hermione is also excellent, and the Weaslys are even more likeable than usual. An all around sweet story that is sure to make you smile.

Okay, so this is definitely my favorite story so far. Snape is so sweet in this. The characterizations are so perfect. I'm just...speechless.

Re: **favorites**
I'm glad you liked it:)

Since this is the last comment I have at the moment, I wanted to mention that my favorite HP fic is actually one recced by Mei: Cambiare Potentes

http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/40009.html

It's a forced bonding fic that does a simply brilliant job of turning the forced bonding genre on its head: there is no fast track to love, lust is by no means guaranteed, neither party is particularly happy about the bonding, and the bond itself has a plausible mythology that results in serious, unexpected consequences to Harry and Severus. This is the only fic I have in my re-read folder that has Harry still in Hogwarts (and is one of the very few fics in which a teenage (17, to be precise) Harry is played as something to be overcome, rather than something that makes Snape hot. Which, ick.) and it's the HP I've re-read most often. Very, very highly recommended.

Re: **favorites**
I've actually been sick as a dog with an absolute beast of a cold all week (and a little snowed in). So I've been reading. Today was the first day I felt up to actually giving my take on things.

I just started reading Cabiare Potentes (thanks for the rec) and so far so good.

Anyhow, as I don't believe I've said it before, thanks for this site as well. I'm a huge fan of epics and tend to give them a little more leeway than medium-length fics. It's so nice to find a place where stories have been vetted already.

Re: **favorites**
You're welcome! I have to admit that this comm was started after I went two whole days without seeing a single rec for a story over 2,000 words on any of the major reccing comms. 2,000 words! I don't even bother downloading fic to read unless it's 5,000 words (and even then only if it's a very tiny fandom -- HP fic rarely gets downloaded unless it's at least 20,000 words).

Long story short, long fic = win:)

(Almost forgot -- I hope you feel better soon and that you love Cambiare Potentes as much as I do. If nothing else, it should keep you occupied for the next few days:)

Oh this WAS good. Really I cannot believe how good. The grammar was nearly perfect (which is almost impossible to find in the longer fics). The characterization was really quite good. The plot was well thought-out and other than Bole-the-younger everything was ended to one's satisfaction.

This is one of those stories that no one interested in fanfic at all could help but love. Not necessarily for any one reason, either, but more because it's a thing of beauty. One thing I liked about this was the fact that it was actually not impossible to leave off reading for little reason. (Dad's birthday last weekend wasn't something to be got through so I could get back to the story, thankfully.)

Part of me liked that the story was really about Harry growing up as well. It's important to have that character development in really good fics of the epic variety. Even Snape developed as a character, and I really like that he was still his own irrascible self despite that.

Now, don't hate me for this, but the entire time I was reading this it felt more like an epic length Manga than a real epic fic. The descriptions were so colorful, so clearly able to be visualized, it was almost impossible not to see the whole thing visually.

Because of that, and the lack of real darkness, and the characters' ages, and some of the post-trauma plot--well, this wasn't my favorite story of all time. In fact, I would probably rate it tied for second in the HP fandom I've read so far.

The story was eminently readable, but I can't immagine a re-read to be nearly as enjoyable. The story depends on a good amount of shock value, which is all well and good, but not nearly as interesting on repeat. It brought to mind Bent Justice for me (although I really preferred the way toobusy2write dealt with the after-effects of non-con) and a less well-known story in BTVS, Worth the Journey by Kay (which you'd probably never read due to the number of chapters, but http://www.athenewolfe.com/justrewards/viewstory.php?sid=1181) because of a similar take on ages in the Giles/Wesley relationship there.

Anyhow, thanks for pointing me in the direction of this opus. If I can ever convince any rl friends to start reading fic I'll point them in this direction early on.

I'm glad you liked it! I have to admit that it's one of my main re-read stories (but that's because I read fics mainly for character development and interaction and CP has both of those in spades:) and it's also the story that brought me into the fandom in the first place, so I have a soft spot for the fic.

Just out of curiosity, is Worth the Journey available as a single file? It sounds like something I'd like to try. Thanks!

sorry...
So far as I can tell that's the only format it's in. Which I'm not terribly happy about . If you like the historical au in general, there is always Nessuno by twoladiesofquality (http://www.twoladiesofquality.com/nessuno.html) with a younger!Xander/older!Spike pairing. I really prefer aus in the BTVS!verse and this is one of the best. A totally unique world is built while still utilizing canon in really unusual ways.

On the rps front (since I cannot follow a single track to save my soul) The Doors of Time by the darling felisblanco really needs to be read by as many people as possible (I know, I know...just send it to mei why don't you). It's just shy of 200k (over with timestamps) and more a beautiful piece of art than fic. There are clips of song interspersed with a beautifully angsty coming-of-age story that's positively magical (and I do mean that literally). Jensen is about as close to being OOC as a character can be, without actually falling completely into that trap.

The author's native tongue is not, as far as I can tell, English. And you can tell in certain small ways. But that being said, it's almost more beautiful for it.

Doors of Time

And since you almost certainly won't be reading that...how about pru's darling Conflicts of Interest 'verse? Have you read it? Cause if you haven't...go...now...seriously, what are you waiting for?

(I actually read Doors of Time and Conflicts of Interest back to back. I imagine there will never come another time when I have such a fantastic pleasure.)

Re: sorry...
That stinks, but the blow is immeasurably softened by alternate fic offerings:)

Conflicts of Interest... is that Smallville/Comic 'Verse? If so, I do think I've read it (though, and I know I risk being pelted by tomatoes for saying so, Pru isn't an author I usually enjoy *ducks*).

Right now I'm just wishing I had more time to read anything at all -- my To Read folder is now at 860 MB and has over 4,000 stories. I can't wait till the holidays are over and I have a chance to chip away at that number.
