Review:
This is an AU from ep. 1x09 "Ariel", where Simon and Jayne get captured by the autorities, and sent to a maximum security prison on the Outer Rim. While inside prison, Jayne finds himself taking care of an utterly broken Simon, while colluding with the rest of Serenity's crew to make their escape.
This fic is excellent in the fact it makes something that I thought was totally impossible, completely believable: Jayne taking care of Simon while still being in character. Jayne is one of those characters who is deceptively simple, but turns out to be surprisingly complex, and
ana_grrl has a great grasp of his motivations. The narration from Jayne's point of view is also excellent, for exactly the same reasons. Which is not to say, however, that this fic is perfect. The background is a little hand-wavy and confusing, and could probably had used a little more exposition. Simon's extremely rapid mental deterioration is also a little unbelieveable, considering that the author's notes places the time line a little past "Objects in Space", which is what, half a year after Ariel?
