RR -- Free for All!

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 8:43 AM
Epic Recs is now being watched by over 300 people!  To celebrate, some of our reccers are going to be posting a bonus rec today.  In addition, we were hoping ya'll would tell us about some of your favorite stories, especially stories that have not fit into any of our previous reader's rec themes.  That's right, anything goes!  Make us proud:)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

From the teensiest of small fandoms, the Challenge (http://senor-coconut-1.livejournal.com/149461.html) by senor_coconut_1 (Kring/Kripke, i kid you not)

Next, Come Play with Me (http://lexzilla.livejournal.com/21213.html) by lexzilla (SPN RPS J2, and its been recc'd everywhere, so I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned here, though probably for just that reason, I guess)

the Music of the Spheres (http://jen-in-japan.livejournal.com/55427.html) series by jen_in_japan is really cute as well (Superman/Batman)

sorry I'm dumping so many on you, but there are just so many I like, i couldn't just choose one! :)
Deep Cover (http://tvlit101.skeeter63.org/deep1.htm) by DL Witherspoon is amazing, and hilarious (the sentinel, and surprisingly, gen.)

A Fashionable Profit (http://mad-gaters.livejournal.com/13244.html) by mad_gaters (spn, gen and HILARIOUS)

The Taste of Apples (http://www.eternalvox.net/~auburn/apples.html) by Auburn (SGA, and it is so creepy and made of AWESOME)

Come Play with Me is on my to-rec list. :) I've had this happen a few times already--just as I write a rec for SPN, someone posts in on crack_van. I'll save this rec for next year, you know, when people need a reminder of how awesome this story is. ;p

I also second Music of the Spheres. My favourite part is when Clark and Bruce discover each other's secret identity.

"A Taste Of Apples" is one of those fics that I enjoy but can't find myself re-reading because it's thrown me for such a loop. I love all of Auburn's stuff.

I'm a fan of long slow romances, and "Music of the Spheres" just did it for me. Jen's near the end of another arc, I believe.

Neat recs. :)

Recs not already in the fandoms listed. . .I'm on a Star Wars kick lately so I'll confine my comments there. Uh, hopefully I'm not violating community rules, as I'm not sure whether these are from LJ authors . . .

An Untimely Frost & A Lingering Frost, by cynical21. (Star Wars, not sure of the rating, probably Pg/R.) It makes me cry. And want to hit Qui-Gon.

An Uncertain Path, The Long Twilight Path, Snapshots & The Chosen Path by red rose knight. (Star Wars, not sure of the rating but there's a bit of sex-reference here and there.) Obi has a different Padawan . . .

Misunderstood & its uncompleted sequel by Quill of Mollimon. (Star Wars, probably a low rating.) Anakin starts off on the Dark Side before meeting Obi.

There's also a BSG (Battlestar Galactica) story I read a long time ago called Twelve. In which one of our favorites of the series turns out to be the 12th Model. No idea though where to find it . . .

I'll have to think what else.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

But where are the links! Links I say! They don't have to be from LJ authors, but we can't read (and possibly rec) the stories if we can't find them.

(That said, thanks for the recs:)
[identity profile] blade-and-roses.livejournal.com wrote:

Oops. Links. They didn’t carry over to the entry. Forgive me, I’m still learning to send from my phone . . . If any of these links don't work (because they're rather long and hopefully I've marked them in correctly) please let me know.

A Lingering Frost (http://www.a-larger-world.com/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=688&PHPSESSID=86c48bceb178eb3d80c4eba86a5af7e4)

An Untimely Frost (http://a-larger-world.com/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=643&PHPSESSID=86c48bceb178eb3d80c4eba86a5af7e4)

An Uncertain Path (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/471264/1/An_Uncertain_Path)

And if you click on the author link, it’ll bring you to the links for the sequals to the story – Long Twilight Path, Snapshots and finally Chosen Path.

Misunderstood (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2811053/1/Misunderstood)

Again if you click the author link, it’ll bring you to the other fics. And if I’m not mistaken, she’s here on LJ under Molliemon1985 (my computer is a bit messed up at the moment, so I’m not sure whether this is the correct name on LJ).

As for Twelve – I went to the link I had for it, and the site is no longer up. Which drove me to run for my external drive to make sure I’d saved a copy of the story, which I had. I’ll have to see if there is another source for it!

Speaking of DL Witherspoon, her "Restoration Series" is an excellent series of Highlander fics. http://tvlit101.skeeter63.org/highland.htm
Gen Methos-centric with a lot of backstory for the oldest Immortal and a good helping of Joe and Duncan McLeod.

Here's another really great and LONG series by Ecolea over at the Stargate Novel Archive: Changing of the Guard
http://www.shahrazad.net/~sgnovels/archive1/xover.html
2001 Stargate SG-1 Fan Fiction Award Winner : Best Gen Crossover
5 stories in this excellent series that deal with Adam Pierson being recruited to help with some translations at SGC. His immortality is discovered and he becomes a member of SG-1. His interactions with Gen. Hammond and the team (but especially Jack O'Neill) provide a bit of comic relief, but overall a dramatic series that eventually confronts Methos' past and origins.

Gundam Wing Stories
The Ion Arc by Sunhawk

Sunhawk's stories, with a link to 'the Ion Arc', is here:

http://kracken.bonpublishing.com/fiction/gw/gw_sunhawk_various.shtml

Even if you don't read or know anything about Gundam Wing, this is the series to read. It is long, beautifully written and has great characterization. Five young Gundam pilots, terrorists to some and freedom fighters on behalf of the colonies to others, form close bonds while fighting against the military dictatorship on earth. Duo is the main protagonist, a resourceful former street kid who can blend in with any situation. The first 2 stories in the arc take place during the war and the later stories take place a couple of years after the war has finished. Very angsty and lots of hurt/comfort. Kraken hosts a lot of art work of the Gundam pilots on her site, so you can see what they look like before you read. Pairing is Duo/Heero, but not really until the third story. I have ready the whole series through at least three times!

Once you are familiar with the universe and the characters, then I can also recommend you try other stories by Sunhawk, Kraken and Maldoror, all on Kraken's site.

Lawless Hearts by Kraken

Kraken's stories are here - I particularly like 'Lawless Hearts' - another Duo/Heero story.

http://kracken.bonpublishing.com/fiction/gw/index.shtml

Freeport by Maldoror

The pairing here is Duo/Wufei and the real star of the story is the anarchist Freeport community. Maldoror's description of how Freeport works makes sense and you feel that it could actually work, but only under the conditions put forward in the story.

http://kracken.bonpublishing.com/fiction/gw/Maldoror/index.shtml

There are some other great Gundam Wing stories out there, but these are the one's that spring instantly to mind for me.

Small or older fandom recs

"Wasteland" and "Fortress" by Becca Abbott. The first is 39,800 words and the second is 53,800. It is a series in the Ai No Kusabi fandom. The are awesome and intense stories, however they do need to come with some serious warnings - extreme violence and graphic sex, quite a bit of which is outright rape or non-con. Link to both is here: http://becca.slashcity.net/site/ai_no_kusabi/ai_no_kusabi.php

"After the Manga" arc by Kracken starts at the end of the Fake series and continues on. It clocks in at an impressive 286,700 words. It has 39 parts, so the link is to the index of the story here: http://kracken.bonpublishing.com/fiction/fake/afterthemanga/

"Turning Point" and "Full Circle" are a two part series in the ST: TOS fandom. Respectively, they are 31,000 and 52,200 words. "Turning Point" can be found here: http://seacouver.slashcity.net/killa/turnpt.html and "Full Circle" is here: http://seacouver.slashcity.net/killa/fc1.html

Original fic
"Kio's Dance" by me_ya_ri is a slave fic that is about 47,600 words. The Prologue is linked here: http://me-ya-ri.livejournal.com/141922.html However, not all parts are linked to the previous ones, so you can find the whole fic on her writing archive, about half way down here: http://me-ya-ri.livejournal.com/111685.html#cutid10

"The One That Got Away" by Rhianne Aile & Madeleine Urban is about 51,000 words long. A great story about two friends, who develop into something more during this H/C piece. The first of five parts can be found here and each subsequent part is linked from the one before: http://rhianne-aile.livejournal.com/9163.html

"The Ideas of Sin" by R. Cooper is an impressive 246,400 words long - all free. It is good enough to be published, but the author is giving it away here: http://ideasofsin.xthesefourwallsx.com/story.html

Smallville fic
"The Oak and the Cypress" by mirtai_amazon is a story that was in a 'zine first and recently posted to the web on her LJ. It is 180,400 words and is an epic story that spans 10 years in the life of Clark and Lex. It follows the 'what if' idea of Clark telling Lex his secret shortly after they meet - how would it have changed both of their lives. In in this new universe how does Clark go from being a young farm boy to being the greatest superhero. The chapter one is here: http://mirtai-amazon.livejournal.com/815.html#cutid1

The other 30 parts can be found on her LJ. The story is all she has posted there right now, so it isn't hard to find. http://mirtai-amazon.livejournal.com/tag/o&c

Original Fic - Darshian Tales by Ann Somerville
Would also like to highly recommend the Darshian Tales by Ann Somerville.

http://www.logophilos.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Itemid=16\

I love all of Ann's stories, but this series just blows me away. Her description 'When the worlds of a young, idealistic healer and an embittered, duty-bound general collide, their lives are changed forever.' This is a long m/m tale of misunderstanding, pain and, eventually, love. I love these stories so much that I bought the printed books so that I can read them over and over.

Hey - the author here. You can read them all for free, online. You only have to pay if you want the print version (or single file download.) All proceeds this year are going to charity.

Hope you at least sample the stories on line :)
