RR -- Rare Pairings

  • Jul. 14th, 2008 at 9:34 AM
As you can probably tell from my previous post, it's Rare Pairings Week here at Epic Recs!  Are you tired of seeing the same old pairings here on ER every week?  Well, now's your chance to broaden our horizons:)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Abishag's Tale by Merri-Todd Webster and MJ
http://basement.ditb.org/archive/15/merritoddwcornerston116501.shtml
Fandom: The X-Files
Pairing: Krycek/WMM (Well-Manicured Man)
Summary: This series chronicles how Alex Krycek became the important figure in the Consortium that we see in recent episodes, and explores his relationship with his mentor, the Well-Manicured Man.

This is really one of my favourite The X-Files stories. I've been saving it for a proper rec (and may still do), but hopefully this will inspire others to add their favourites to this thread.
It also contains one of my secret kinks; Jane, you know which one ;p
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

See, I like that kink, but the idea of anyone with WMM kind of creeps me out. Really, there are very few bad guys I want to read about -- villainy appears to be one of my squicks (though I do like morally ambiguous characters, so maybe I'm just fickle:)
[identity profile] meishali.livejournal.com wrote:
Jul. 16th, 2008 09:30 pm (UTC)
But...but WMM is one of the better guys, seriously. Didn't he help out Mulder and Scully in one of the movies? You have a problem with WMM but not Krycek?
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Jul. 16th, 2008 09:34 pm (UTC)
Actually, I do have a problem with Krycek, but as he's young and attractive I figured no one would believe me:) Still, he's one of the main reasons I don't read X-Files slash.

I don't like *evil* characters either but will accept shades of grey. Krycek and WMM are actually fairly good guys in this story, and the Krycek from Exigency is just...adorable.

Ah, but *then* you have Skinner, which trips my 'people in authority' squick.

Really? I maybe have too many squicks...
[identity profile] meishali.livejournal.com wrote:

The Skinner squick I totally get...can't help you though. You'll just have to look at it his way: even the AD needs some down time ;p

Yep, and as long as I don't have to read about it in any detail at all, I'm okay:)

I almost couldn't bring myself to click on this one, because I couldn't imagine the pairing. But it's been highly recced, and deservedly so.

Harry Potter: Snape/Neville (post-War)

Okay, an even more unlikely pairing--Toad and an original character. But I love, love, love this fic.

Thank you for the recs! :)
Your Snape/Neville rec reminded me of another Neville-centric series, which I will put in a separate reply.

Just finished going through my flashdrive of saved fanfic. I pulled some of my favorite rare pairings.

Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Percy Weasley/Kingsley Shacklebolt, NC-17
1.Title:Political Beliefs (http://community.livejournal.com/percy_ficathon/3567.html)
Summary: Percy becomes the liason to the Muggle Prime Minister. Over the course, he examines his life and beliefs.

2.Title:Occupational Hazards (http://community.livejournal.com/hp_springsmut/86956.html)
Summary: Working in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement is a dangerous job. Percy might disappear under mysterious circumstances like the previous administrative assistants, only if his boss doesn't kill him first...
Comment: I have a huge folder of HP fics on my flashdrive, but only 2 Percy/Shacklebolt fic. Had to include both. Normally, not big on HP recs, due to number of rec sites devoted to the fandom.

Fandom: Barbie-verse
Title: The One Where Ken Meets GI Joe (http://fryadvocate.livejournal.com/29674.html), prequel is The Best Part of Breaking Up (http://fryadvocate.livejournal.com/17643.html)
Pairing: Ken/GI Joe
Comment:Rare fandom and rare pairing. Short crack! fics

Fandom: Transformers
Title: Comm Signal (http://wanderingscroll.livejournal.com/12173.html)
Pairing:Judy Witwicky/Frenzy, PG
Summary: Culture Clash with interesting results.
Comment: Cute!

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Title: Revelation Series, link to Index (http://www.mrks.org/~bone/atlantis/01/index.html), 10 stories, 2 side stories
Pairing: John/Ronon, NC-17
Comment: This was one of the first John/Ronon stories that I read. I realize that the pairing is not as rare as it once was, but there still isn't a large amount of it. Good pairing, great writing.

This is a topic I had to respond to...
Here's a nice long series for you -- The Falcon and the Dove (http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/sheherazade/falcon.html) by Kristin. It's an Ardeth Bey/Jonathan Carnahan pairing from the two Mummy films.

The wonderful Oak and Mistletoe (http://www.britslash.co.uk/sue/oakand.htm) by Sue for Inspector Morse.

If you can handle an ER fic where there appears to be something in the water making almost all of the characters gay, then I recommend Rocket Launcher (http://www.matthewtime.com/rocketone.html) by Matthew Haldeman. The main pairing of the fic is Romano/Malucci, but also has Green/Luca and Benton/Carter.

For Due South, I have to go with Lucy Hale's Love and Hate (http://www.squirreltail.net/lucyhale/love.html) which pairs Turnbull with Harding Welsh.

With SGA, I rather like McDex so there's In the Hands of Yes by Hth (http://hth.gatefiction.com/handsofyes.htm) and Anomalies (http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=8743&warning=12) by Sori.

I love rare pairings (probably why I can never settle on a OTP) so I’m looking forwarding to reading the other recs. Here are some of my favorite rare pairs (all are NC-17):

Fandom: Smallville/Firefly
Pairing: Lex Luthor/Simon Tam
Title: The Things I Cannot Change (”http://firefly.populli.org/archive/8/thethings.shtml”)
Author: Dark Emerald (http://firefly.populli.org/archive/authorD_F.shtml)
Author’s Summary: Something unexpected happens to Lex Luthor in the Kawatche Caves. And as a result, something *really* unexpected happens to Simon Tam aboard Serenity.
Note: Very interesting take on Clark and excellent characterizations. I love crossovers and this one is a favorite.

Fandom: Collateral (2)
Pairing: Vincent/Max
Author: The Tenth Muse (http://thetenthmuse1.madbrilliant.com/index1.html)
Title: Anniversary (”http://www.thetenthmuse1.madbrilliant.com/collateral/standalones/anniversary.htm")
Author's Summary: Vincent's idea of being romantic. *grin* warnings: non-con, but not really, you'll see and mpreg.

Title: Relax (http://www.thetenthmuse1.madbrilliant.com/collateral/standalones/relax.htm)
Author's Summary: Vincent thinks that Max needs to relax.
Note: Anything by this writer is worth reading (if you like slave fic check out her Romanlogy series).

Fandom: Men in Black
Pairing: K/J
Title: K is for Kink (http://www.pornbunnyfarm.com/pages/kisforkink.html)
Author: Amy (http://www.notdeadyetstudios.com/bunnyfarm/)
Author's Summary: J and K rethink the nature of their relationship... with spanking.
Note: This is one of my favorite rare pairings and any fic in this fandom is appreciated.

Form this list, and what I didn’t add, I see that I love rare fandoms which is not necessarily the same thing but I do love exchanging stories so I hope everyone enjoys. I can’t wait to take a look at what’s already been posted!

Sorry for the delayed reply; I haven't have much time to read lately.

I enjoyed K is for Kink very much. Thank you. :)
The Smallville/Firefly crossover sounded very interesting, but I had to stop reading because...well, it's all explained here:

No worries for responding, what you consider to be, late. Funny though, I barely noticed what prompted your rant. That's what, for me, makes this wholke fan fic thing so much fun and interesting to talk about! That's why I love [livejournal.com profile] epic_rants; well, that and your honesty about how you feel.

P.S. Glad I could contribute, in some small way, to [livejournal.com profile] epic_rants! ;~}

Hee, I think that probably has a lot to do with childhood associations (and I bet Freud is having a field day!). Seeing something your parents used to call you when you were little being used in a sex scene is probably...awkward for most people.

And thank you for contributing to both epic_recs AND epic_rants.

A little late...
Deal (http://joisbishmyoga.livejournal.com/252288.html#cutid2) by joisbishmyoga
Fandom: Detective Conan/Magic Kaito
Pairing: Kaito/Conan
Warning: Pseudo-shota (Conan is physically 11 at the start of the story)
Length: 17 shortish chapters + epilogues and omakes
Summary: Years after being drugged with the apotoxin, Conan loses Ran and propositions Kid.
Review: This story is wonderful answer to "what if Conan was never cured and had to grow up all over again?" Because what could he do, faced with going through puberty again, alone, unable to date kids his physical age (because they're children) or adults his actual age (because they would have to pedophiles)? So Conan propositions Kid, who knows the truth about him and might just be insane enough to look past his physical age, and he stays in character the entire time.

Excerpt:
"You know," Conan began, the words almost surprising himself, "I always thought I'd get a way to fix this, and just pop back into my old life, but... it's been four years."

And that was the crux of the problem, wasn't it.

"So I'm eleven years old. My classmates are just learning about sex and romance... Ayumi-chan tried to get me to go for ice-cream last week. Ran won't hold my hand anymore; all she sees is a boy getting too old for such liberties.

"But I'm also twenty-one. I can't see my classmates as peers -- can't see past the law, past their ages and how young they all are. It twists my stomach to try. But I can't... god, how could I, with anyone who didn't know about me? The only ones who do are Heiji and you--" And Heiji would have the same problem Conan did. Conan just plain looked eleven.

Kid apparently made sense of that diatribe, filled in the unspoken parts, and asked sadly, "So you think so little of me, Shin'ichi?"

Diplomatic Relations (http://maldoror-gw.livejournal.com/30383.html) by maldoror_gw
Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: LeeGaara (Is this pairing still rare? It's been gaining favor lately.)
Warning: None I can think of.
Length: 23 chapters + epilogue
Summary: Lee is sent to Suna as an envoy, and becomes friends with the Kazekage.
Review:This story is alternately hilarious and hot. I love the romance that grows between Lee and Gaara, although it is not in the least bit normal. Not that Gaara would be able to handle a normal relationship.

Excerpt:
Despite Lee's protests, Gaara had wandered deeper into the seedy underbelly of the docks, looking at everything - the boats, the market stalls, the arguments, the bustling life around him - with a tentative curiosity that had eventually defeated Lee's better judgment, which was how they'd ended up in a tavern where a drunken sailor had mistaken the Kazekage of Sunagakure for a hooker and asked him for a good time.

Temari was going to kill him. Slowly.

"So, in that context," Gaara was saying thoughtfully, "what exactly is a ‘daddy’?"

If Gaara figured out that the sailor had thought Lee was his pimp, Temari would not have the opportunity to kill him; Lee would die of embarrassment first.
