Review:
The Dresden Files is an ongoing series by Jim Butcher, chronicling the somewhat inadvertently action-filled life of one Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, Chicago's first phonebook listed wizard. The books themselves number nine novels and counting, and even spawned a short-lived show on The Sci-Fi Channel. The show writers tinkered with the canon from the books, and so fiction inspired by Dresden Files tends to be written in both TV and Book 'verses.

This story is a short bit of holiday cheer featuring Harry, his half-brother Thomas Raith, and Harry's friend and occasional unrequited sexual tension gal-pal, police officer Karrin Murphy: Karrin invites Harry to accompany her to an Officer's Ball, and Harry becomes suspicious of the origins of her suddenly amorous actions. While on the TV show the tension between Harry and Karrin seemed to cross over from undercurrent territory to "we're totally doin' it" fairly quickly, in the books the kibosh appears to have been placed on anything truly occurring between the two, which makes this cute bit of "mistletoe/my conniving vampire half-brother [just roll with us here, okay?] made us do it" somewhat AU, but all enjoyable. The tone comes quite close to emulating the wisecracking style of Butcher's narration, and the characterizations are close to perfect (a few minor canon quibbles, but still). There's not much Dresden fic out there (and, oh!, for some long/epic Dresden fic...my kingdom for a hint of epic Dresden fic), but more stories like this one would be a blessing.

The Accordion Makes All The Difference

I'm reccing het. And I'm reccing something not explicit. It's a sign, I'm sure.

Thank you for the rec; I'm reading the books right now...and I'm concerned that Harry is sort of afraid of Murphy. ;p
Will read the recced story once I'm done book 1.

*grin* I just finished a Dresden re-read a little while ago. The first book is okay, but things really pick up the further in you go. And he cranks them out rather fast, so you don't have to wait more than a year and a half between installments. The story is more based on what happens post Book 5 or 6, but it's still one of the few well-written Dresden fics I could find. There's a good number of Dresden/Supernatural crossover fics out there, though. It's a nifty connection.

Ooo, be careful -- there are huge spoilers in the rec and in the story about things that happen in later books (especially two and three).

I [heart] The Dresden Files (the books anyway, the TV series was pretty awful...)
