RR -- Teeny, Tiny Fandoms

  • Jun. 16th, 2008 at 9:02 AM

It's Teeny, Tiny Fandom Week here at Epic Recs.  And by Teeny, Tiny Fandom Week, we don't mean ER's usual definition of small fandom (which still includes The X-Files) or even the world's definition of small fandom (which includes Jeeves and Wooster), we mean *really* tiny fandoms.  Ones where you can count the number of epic stories on one hand (or, in some cases, on one finger).  Whee!

Before we get to the reccing, there's something I've been meaning to do for a while.  First, I should explain that I have recently discovered that fanfiction.net is not completely awful.  Yes, its interface sucks, and it's a memory hog, and its advertising is completely obnoxious, and the entire manga/anime section is an exercise in dashing raised expectations, but there *is* some good fic there, if you're just willing to look.

Fortunately for everyone, Raimond has managed to take care of most of the above problems with her fantastic program, Fanfiction Downloader.  Just cut and paste the URL for the first chapter of the story you want to read and the program downloads all chapters of the fic and saves them as a plain HTML file with nothing but the story text.  Simply brilliant.  (Note, there are other sites supported aside from ff.net, but sadly their interfaces are so freaking bad I can't even figure out which stories I want to read on those archives, *sob*).

Why am I bringing this up now?  I'll be reccing some fic from ff.net over the next few months and as some are very long, I'm not going to link to each chapter.  Instead, I'll post the main URL to the story and note that it's located on ff.net.  After that, it's up to you as to how you want to read it.

Now, on to the reccing!

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Ff.net has some *excellent* fic - far more of them than any other archive on the net (not surprising, when it's a million times bigger than any other archive on the net). It's also, I've found, one of the most user-friendly when you've found a fic to read, what with email notifications, favourites lists, easy to read black-on-white with options for changing text size, etc.

The problem is, of course, finding the good fics, especially in fandoms like HP where there's a lot of kids writing. I find that the only ways to search the site really are the C2s or favourites lists of people you've read & enjoyed stories from. Mostly, though, I just follow recs from off-site.

Anyway, I tend to get a bit enthusiastic when defending ff.net, so to the point:

Tiny fandom recs

I think I've given you the link to this before, but for the sake of anyone else reading the thread:

Air Force One: Give a Mouse a Cookie (http://users.frii.com/wanderer/fanfic/mouse.html) by Taliesin

I rather enjoyed it, even if I found the pairing rather unlikely.

Others:

The Princess Diaries: If You Want a Place in the History Books (http://tellitslant.livejournal.com/808966.html) by Kathryne

The Terminator: The Unwritten Future (http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/archive/17/theunwritten.html) by Pouncer

Wonderfalls: Jesus Complex (http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/46/jesuscomplex.html) by trascendenza

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Galactic Miscellany (http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/archive/2/thegalactic.html) by Rheanna

I'm not really sure *how* big this fandom is as I haven't really looked:

Joan of Arcadia: Goodnight, Moon (http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/Otherfic/JoAGoodnightMoon.htm) by Yahtzee

Also, if crossovers where one fandom is tiny are included:

Bridget Jones' Diary x Alias:
Jack Bristow at the Edge of Reason
(http://www.thechicagoloop.net/yahtzee/aliasfic/TheEdgeOfReason.htm) by Yahtzee

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy x Firefly: An Accurate Mind (http://www.altogetherelsewhere.net/multiverse/2007/anaccuratemind.html) by Mara Greengrass

I have found lots of good fic in smaller fandoms at ff.net -- for the bigger ones, however, I've had absolutely no luck. (Though, I will say that all of the things you like about ff.net are the things I don't like, which probably explains why I'm not a huge fan. On the other hand, it could be much, much worse (adultfanfiction.net, anyone?)) On the plus side, since I'm only interested in smaller fandoms on ff.net and I'm willing to give anything over 10,000 words a shot, you'll find quite a few recs here that might not have been found elsewhere. Especially with me having recently downloaded 100+ fics in twenty or so fandoms:)

And, wow! Thanks for the recs!

You don't like email notifications etc?? Or do you mean the text thing? Personally, since I generally read online and have a big monitor, some archives can be really difficult for me to read, so one like ff.net with simple black on white works wonderfully for me.

Searching *at* ff.net for fics from big fandoms is pretty difficult, unless, like I said, you've identified someone you like who's got a favourites list or C2 which has the type of fics you enjoy on it.

You can also set up really specific RSS feeds on ff.net - not just the individual fandom, but the characters, fic lengths, etc too, which can be really useful for seeing things on your LJ friends page!

However, trust me, there are some brilliant fics there from big fandoms. Harry Potter especially has loads of great fics there. There does tend to be less slash there than elsewhere, probably due to the fact that so much slash is adults-only which is forbidden there, but there is *some* good slash on there, and lots of gen and het. I think I probably read more fics there than anywhere other than LJ, really.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

I don't like e-mail notifications because I don't like WIPs. Not ff.net's fault (though I think it is one of the main reasons why most current fic is released in tiny chapters, rather than as large chapters/whole stories). More importantly is that I don't have internet at home, so I download all fic to be read later. ff.net's slow interface (and the bazillions of tiny chapters) made that a nightmare.

Black on white is fine, but I prefer serifed fonts for longer stories. (Sp? I'm running on two hours of sleep here:)

What I do like about ff.net is that you can reduce search results (though that really is only useful for the smaller fandoms). Still, I much, much prefer Automated Archive's interface (and smaller fandoms do tend to have fewer ads, which I really appreciate).

I've heard there's good HP fic at ff.net, but I haven't figured out a good way to pick the wheat from the chaff. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

[identity profile] lothy.livejournal.com wrote:

I *love* WIPs. I really like being able to make fics last a long time, and it's great when I see an email (or entry on my friends list) which lets me know there's a new chapter to read!

Of course I don't generally start reading WIPs that just have a chapter or two, unless they're written by an author I already love & know will update it, but I'm not really one to fret about whether a fic will be completed... I'll even read clearly abandoned fics if they're good enough.

HP fandom is, in my experience, the biggest fandom on the 'net. I've been a part of it for years, and am literally still constantly finding out there's sections of it I've never heard about before. It's massive, and so, with any archive (not just ff.net) I'd suggest that simply browsing it is a bad idea. There's simply too much to look through. Even the C2s and favourites lists tend to be too big to really work with!

Therefore, look for off-site recs, thematic lists, ficsearch comms, all that type of thing, and you'll find it far easier!

You can check out my own Harry Potter bookmarks (http://del.icio.us/Lanta/harry_potter). There's a *lot* of ff.net fics there.

I'll also do a quick pimp for my HP List of Lists (http://partial-eclipse.net/lists/) website, which tends to be the easiest way to find your way to the theme/pairing/character you want to read about.

See and I totally freak out when I get to the end of a story and realize it's not actually the end:) Different strokes...

I'm such a fast reader that I've actually gone through a lot of the major HP archives and read most of what they have. If a site allows for single page downloads (which a lot of the HP sites do, thank goodness), allows for searches for word count, and includes warnings in the search results, I've probably already cleaned it out:)

Ooo, recs! Thank you:)

Well, in that case be aware that some of the fics I've bookmarked aren't completed!

I suppose it's easier for you if you only read fics over a certain word length - greatly reduces the amount of fics you get in any searches! I still bet that there are a *lot* of HP archives you haven't found, though ;)

Enjoy reading the fics... let me know if you find anything you like!

I'm currently reading a HP fic that I am really loving, and consequently am planning to rec all over the place. Remembering that you asked for HP fics on ff.net, I thought I'd mention it here.

It is canon pairings, so het, which I don't know if you read. It's very plot-focused though, so if you can enjoy the books despite the pairings you can probably enjoy this story *shrug*. Up to you, but is well-written and very in-character.

It's epic - there's 276,125 words, and it seems the author has already begun posting a sequel! I'm only up to chapter 10 but they're long chapters, I've been reading for ages.

I read slash, femmeslash, het, and gen, depending on which fandom I'm reading in, so bring it on:)

How prominent is Ginny in the story? I'm not a fan of stories that bash Ginny, but I kind of prefer to avoid her all together, if I can help it.

That said, if you have any more HP recs, I'm all ears -- I've already gone through and downloaded every completed fic over 60,000 words that a) features Harry and Snape and b) had grammatically correct descriptions, but that really isn't the most practical way of finding fic. For HP, I generally read Draco/Harry and Snape/Harry, though I once read a Snape/Lockhart story and kind of liked it (I *know*) -- I've discovered that I kind of life fics that take a conceited ass and digs deep enough to find something worth writing about (I have a couple of Gaston-based fics to rec from Disney's Beauty and the Beast for this very reason:)

(Though, speaking of ff.net, even as you posted this I was going through all of my forty or so fandoms to see if anything had been completed recently. *sigh* I love fandom:)

Thanks!

Mmm... well, she's one of the three who goes back in time so she's naturally in it quite a bit (especially once the story reaches Harry's second year), but the main character is definitely Harry. She's well characterised: most portrayals of Ginny I've read are either Mary-Sues or bash her, and neither's the case here.

I think I've already given you the link to my bookmarks, with all my HP recs on there. Although I am currently working my way through a load of HP fics I recently found recs for, so my bookmarks are getting updated pretty regularly at the moment.

I don't read much H/D: I'm not a fan of Draco and only read a story with him in if it's a really interesting plot. I love Snape/Harry though, and I'm also fond of rare pairings - anything with Luna in, for instance :)

You'd like Ginny in this story ;) Of course the problem is that our views are affected by what we've read elsewhere, aren't they? I find that all the time.

IMO the major problem with Ginny is that in canon she's mostly seen through Harry's POV - firstly as a timid fangirl and best-friend's-sister, and later as a love interest and All Around Perfect Woman. He's a teenager, he's biased! But I sometimes enjoy reading fics that try to give her proper depth.

Yes, updated, and likely to be more so as I read through this stack of recs :)
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 25th, 2008 10:37 pm (UTC)
Actually I wasn't a huge fan of her in canon, but then I never thought she was very well developed by Rowlings (not the first issue I have with canon and undoubtedly not the last).

Enjoy your reading:)

[identity profile] lothy.livejournal.com wrote:

That's what I meant by the "seen through Harry's POV" thing ;) She wasn't all that well developed, and I think it is due to the POV. At first Harry barely notices her, then he gets infatuated with her; neither leads to giving us an unbiased perspective!

I think she can be an interesting character though. I mean she's got a lot of her brothers' traits in her, and she's got interesting backstory (especially the Chamber of Secrets).
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 25th, 2008 10:48 pm (UTC)
Actually, I don't think the fault lies in POV, I think the fault lies in the fact that JKR doesn't develop *most* of her minor characters (and, unfortunately, Ginny falls in that category). It's quite possible to develop a character using someone else's POV (even without the POV's character being aware of it), but either JKR never learned how or didn't want to bother. (Ahem. As you can probably tell, my love of her writing went waaaay down as the series progressed. I still haven't read the last book, in fact.)

Heh. And you don't even want to know what I think of the Weasley's as a whole (especially the twins, *shudder*). I'll just say that JKR appears to have a very 'boys will be boys' attitude while my thinking is more along the lines of 'boys will turn into entitled wife-beaters/criminals/sociopaths if you don't teach them that hurting people *is not funny*'.

Okay, clearly I should stop now:)

BTW I completely agree with you about AFF.net. I find it completely unusable. The search engine is rubbish, there's masses of badly-written fic (which doesn't even have ff.net's excuse of lots of kids writing since it's supposedly adults-only) and as far as I'm aware there isn't even a way of getting notified when a story you like is updated...
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:
Jun. 16th, 2008 05:22 pm (UTC)
I have so many issues with aff.net that I'm not going to even bother to list them all. The main one, however, is that there is no way to tell if a fic is completed before starting to read it. Since I *only* read completed fic, that alone makes the archive essentially useless. *grr*

Thanks for the link to the fic downloader program. I like saving fic to read off-line, so I'm sure it'll be a huge help.

BTW, if you enable Adblocker (under Extras on FF.net's main page), you won't see ads on the site. You have to re-enable it every 2 or 3 days (I forget which), but it's worth it to browse ad-free.

Marvel comics is not a teeny fandom, but the Steve/Tony corner of it is. And only has two epic stories, both by the same authors.

Resurrection, Reconstruction, and Redemption (and its sequels Readjustment and Hostages to Fortune) by [livejournal.com profile] seanchai and [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon: It is author-admitted blatant shipper fic that sets out to fix Marvel's Civil War event. It is very epic with Resurrection having a 90k word count, Readjustment 37k, and Hostages 47k. (And there are some plot threads in Hostages that are left open as set-up for another story.) There is lots of angst and cuddles and messy emotions all while trying to make things right and defeat supervillains.

I remember you have issues with death fics, and while I wouldn't classify this story as such, it does start with Steve dead because Marvel killed him off during Civil War. He's resurrected right in the beginning of Chapter 1, but Tony was left pretty broken by his death, so. I don't know how much you want to read about the aftermath of a character's death, even if he's dead in the story for less than 2000 words.

The only other epic Steve/Tony is The Roughest Day (It's about 44k words.), also by [livejournal.com profile] seanchai and [livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon. It's set before Civil War, so there's no major character death, not even offscreen. (At one point Steve and Tony both think Tony's dying, but he does not, I promise.) Angst and cuddles while saving the world! And as a coda, there's Things Are Looking Up which takes place after The Roughest Day and is just a nice little bit of fluff.
[identity profile] jane-elliot.livejournal.com wrote:

Hee! I read this and immediately said, "Who's Steve?" I'm assuming Tony is the guuy from Iron Man? (Which, actually, I'm only assuming because the movie just came out.)

I have absolutely no issue with character death if the character actually ends up being alive, so the first sounds very promising. And angst and cuddles are my favorite kinds of fic:)

Thanks for the recs!

Hee! I have to admit that I sometimes skim sex scenes as well, though if I think I'm going to rec a fic, I do make myself read every word of the story (just in case I miss something really huge that would make me change my mind about the rec).

Honestly though, after a few thousand fics, the sex scenes do tend to blend together...

I usually read all of the sex scenes in a PWP, but if it's a plot-heavy story, I'll just read the first one and skim the rest. I like stories where we (ie the readers) know that they are having sex (c'mon, two grown men dating each other and not having sex is just unrealistic under normal circumstance) but are spared the details.

Title: A Forfeit of Dreams (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/429100/1/) (Epilogue (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1516813/1/A_Forfeit_of_Dreams_Epilogue))
Author: [livejournal.com profile] klmorgan
Pairing: Jareth/Sarah Williams
Rating: R
Word Count: 130,848 (Epilogue: 19,248 WDMC: 64,044)
Summary: If you had a second chance, would you take it? If you had a choice, would you do the right thing? And if you had a dream... what would you give to make it come true?
Reader's Notes: Online fans consider this to be the unofficial sequel to the movie and there is little wonder as to why. It's like she took the world created in the movie and showed you the other half that was hidden in the shadows. I suspect that What Dreams Must Come (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1535882/1/What_Dreams_Must_Come) (the sequel) will flip that world over once more to expose it's underbelly... if the story is ever continued.

Thanks again! (BTW, for the Labrynth fic -- does that have a happy ending? I'm afraid I'm shallow:)

No worries! It has a happy ending. Promise. However, the sequel is unfinished and abandoned. What's there is still amazing but then it just cuts off, so I'd advise those who can't handle that sort of thing to just stop after AFoD's epilogue.

I'll stop after the epilogue, then;)

Thanks again!

On second thought, stop before the epilogue since it's really there to bridge AFoD and WDMC and therefore won't do you any good if you're not reading the latter. Sorry, it's been quite a while since I read it.
