Introducing...Epic Rants

  • Jun. 5th, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Those who've been around for a while probably know that on one comm or another, I've posted 'why didn't I rec' rants.  These basically explained why certain stories (many of which were repeatedly recced to me) were not recced in Epic Recs.  Unfortunately, for one reason or another, the comms these posts appeared on disappeared or were used for other things.  Thus when Mei suggested that we start doing similar posts, I totally jumped on the chance to make a new comm:)  Thus:

Where Mei and I bitch (politely) about fic.  Enjoy!

Re: Urm... Gosh.
I really feel concrit is far better sent to the author privately than posted on a public com but of course, everyone's going to have their own opinions and maybe I'm in the minority; I can only speak for myself.

I'm really not trying to be overly critical because I do see what you're trying to do with this, but I can't help but feel that a lot of writers will see this as just more negativity. I'm not sure the fandom needs more negativity.

Re: Urm... Gosh.
Fair enough:) I will say that when I posted these in (admittedly smaller venues), not only did they not spawn any negativity (or wanking, which I was really worried about), but they actually seemed to prompt readers to try stories that they wouldn't have before (since the aspects that didn't work for me worked for them). Of course, I'm focusing on the positives, but I'll also be doing everything in my power to keep the comm civil (including a zero tolerance policy for flames/trolls/wank/etc.) If it doesn't work, it doesn't work and we shut the place down, but I'm hopeful that it will work out well.

Thanks for commenting!

Re: Urm... Gosh.
Hm... I personal take on these rants is that they are not really criticisms, but more like 'this is a good story, I'll tell you why it didn't work for me, but hey, it might work for you'. Frankly, I wouldn't even bother writing a public review for a BAD story that I didn't like at all.

I've read a lot of Jane's rants before and ended up liking most of the stories she didn't. She and I just have very different tastes, and I think the same can be said for the rest of the fandom. One of the reasons why I pushed Jane to start this comm is that it would be a shame not to 'review' some of the greatest stories in fandom just because of personal quirks/kinks.
