RR -- Angst / Drama

  • Jul. 29th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
We've come to the close of our July theme week at epic_recs, Angst/Drama, and we hope you've enjoyed our recs on the topic.

Do you have any favorite angsty fics?  Any dramatic tales that you really enjoyed?  We'd love to it if you'd share them with us.

Things to keep in mind:
- Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
- You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).
- WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING NEW RECCERS. Reccers are accepted by invitation only and the invitations are issued primarily based on their response to RR posts.  If you're interested, respond to this post (or one of the previous RR posts) with a full rec, including Title, Author, Rating, Pairing, Genres, Length, Summary, and Review (including details of why you liked the story).

Today's Topic: Angst and/or Drama

The Last Dance by Sushi
Title: The Last Dance
Author: Sushi
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry/Snape
Genre: Angst
Length: Long (~38,000)
Summary: Once upon a time, there was a boy named Harry Potter. He died...
Warnings!!!: Deathfic, Lemon

Author's LJ: http://wikdsushi.livejournal.com/

Review:

This is the story that makes me cry every time I read it. It's the story that is beautiful even if it doesn't have a happy ending. It's about love.. True love that is not innocently beautiful or purely roses and honey. There's death, you know that it's not meant to be. It's about a love that lasts.

Sushi is a great storyteller, she's known for her Civil War 'Verse. She makes it seem as if you're really there, observing the story as it happens. The Last Dance is in 4 parts and you'll wish it didn't end. Maybe you're like me and regret reading it because you ended bawling your heart out. But you should read it, it's simply beautiful. It's the epitome of everything angst!Snarry.

The Last Dance is entirely a last dance for our two main characters, a second chance at a love that lost the chance to take wing and soar. This story is beautiful, simply beautiful. Even if you feel disappointed or disheartened at the end, I think we all agree that it was the perfect ending for them.

Vale Sanare by rurounihime
Vale Sanare by rurounihime
Harry Potter (EWE)
Harry/ Draco
Draco’s world gains a new component, just when he thought he’d sorted everything out.
NC-17
Author's Warning(s): seizures, war injuries, angst
Length: Long - 23,327
Originally published at HD Holidays and now on AO3.

I have a weakness for a Draco who's lost a lot during the war without losing his sharp edges. In Vale Sanare, he's got reduced circumstances, public dislike, none of the convictions of his youth, and he's been stricken with a magical illness that resembles epilepsy. Rurounihime starts the story with a seizure at Gringotts. It's the suspense and the way she writes Draco that I love; he gets by with a stubborn hold on what's left of his pride, and an expectation that nothing will go his way. Her Harry is more self confident post-war, less temperamental (with the notable exception of mobile calls from Ginny!), and is no stranger to illness himself.

Excerpt:
Draco kneads his forearm, not really caring this time whether or not he has witnesses. He always has witnesses. He’s got the mother of all witnesses right behind him, one hand still at his elbow as if he might collapse and ooze away from the world of the living any second. Half of Draco wants to roll his eyes and smack Potter for being a saviour. The other half wants nothing but the scant support of that hand, regardless of whomever it may be attached to.

He has a brief desire to shove his bare forearm under Potter’s nose, just to show him that tattoos are forever. Just in case he is pondering getting one.

Potter’s hand finally drops from his elbow, but a low voice sounds just at his ear, and it sounds like a contract of sorts, promising more coddling should Draco fail to meet the terms. “You alright now?”

You are waaaaaaaaay too good to me. Way.

Wow AGAIN. You have a way with words that is so kind and thought-provoking, and I'll say it again, I am honored to have it turned toward things that I have written. I really appreciate this. THANK YOU.

I hardly ever read angst because, well, it hurts! But there's one Stargate SG-1 fic I'll reread even though I sob the whole way through. Willemakee by Mary Jane is about Jack/Daniel, but not about them getting together. It's a death fic. (That's not a spoiler--it has already happened by the opening scene.) The rest of the story is so painfully beautiful it's left an indelible mark on fandom.

I completely agree about it hurting, especially this fic. It's one of the few fics that had me sniffling.

Thank you for the reminder about it, though. :)

Angst isn't usually my cuppa tea but...
secure in his disbelief by el_em_en_oh_pee

It's sweet, charming, funny in places, and every time I read it I feel terrible for all of the characters even though I usually hate X cheating on Y fics. But, in this one, I can't help but love Oliver who figures out what he wants (Percy) when he is about twelve and then goes after it with his unusual unrelenting determination. I can't help but pity Penelope who is good and smart and trusting and, ultimately, has terrible luck. And I can't hate Percy for waffling about and making both Oliver and Penelope terribly unhappy because he is written with such kindness by the author.

Someone I Used To Know by ignrockspock

This (short) fic explores why Pepper stays with Tony in the years before Tony builds an iron suit and (mostly) turns his life around. The characterizations are spot on with a Pepper who is sensible, intelligent, ambitious, and secretly has a deeply loving heart and a Tony Stark that is a selfish, self-absorbed, egotistical, self-destructive exhibitionist with a heart of gold.

Piecemeal Drama
Title: Fragments of the Indiscernible Clock
Author: JennaLouise
Fandom: Ninja Turtles
Rating: M
Pairing: N/A
Genre: Angst/Drama, Family
Length: Medium (13,641)
Summary: A scientist with something to prove, a priest who doesn't care, and four turtles attempting to defend their city from crime. When their paths become intertwined, a race against the clock ensues, a clock that refuses to be read.
Warnings: Death, Dissection, Temporal Confusion

Review: Whenever asked for an example of a genre, I tend to go back to the ones in my first fandom, but I've never found a fic I wanted to replace Fragments in the Angst/Drama file of my brain. Fragments tells of the search for Raphael after he is taken captive, and is heart-breaking, tragic, and an absolute work of art. JennaLouise tells a breathtaking story in beautiful prose, with a twist. Much of the story is revealed in snatches, a few lines here and there, with some parts missing and the rest completely out of order.

I've seen a few authors try this approach, but JennaLouise is the only one I've seen succeed. Not only does she reveal the story gradually, pulling from different POVs and times, she manages to do so in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat even though you can guess what has already happened and will happen in the future. Even more amazingly, she manages to convey both the unchangeable and indeterminate nature of time, and suggest that the story itself is changing as the pieces are revealed.

Even if you don't usually read this fandom, I recommend reading it just to enjoy the writing style. If you've seen one of the movies, read a comic, or watched a few of the episodes -any version- that's all the background you need.
